The Selja and Mides Gorges and the Oases of Chebika and Tamerza - Tunisia
The Hotel Ksar El Jerid, located in Tozeur, has 109 rooms, a restaurant, a snack bar, a Moorish café, several bars, a beautiful large swimming pool with children's pool, a spa including hammam, jacuzzi and massage cabin , a meeting and conference room as well as a tennis court.
Our room is air conditioned and has a large comfortable bed, a sofa, a bedside table on which is placed a telephone, a television set as well as a well-equipped bathroom with a toilet, a bath with integrated shower, a sink, a large mirror, hairdryer and all daily use products.
We had dinner at the hotel restaurant. The dishes were served buffet style. The choice was limited, but the food was excellent.
The common areas of this establishment, which is also very well maintained, are pleasant and very well appointed.
The Red Lizard is a tourist train that crosses the Selja gorges, a pretty canyon worthy of the most beautiful landscapes of Fart West.
This train was offered to the Bey of Tunis by the French consul at the beginning of the 20th century. It has six cars pulled by a locomotive and the interior is adorned with woodwork and furnished with pretty velvet or leather armchairs.
It was stored on a service road for many years to then be restored and put back into operation for this tourist circuit.
Departure is from Métlaoui station. The train travels about forty kilometers on a railway line which is used to transport phosphate. The duration of this excursion is approximately 1h45.
The train moves slowly in the city of Métlaoui and then enters a steppe that stretches out of sight.
The steep, ocher-colored cliffs are getting closer and closer to us. The sun is shining and the exceptional luminosity allows us to discover landscapes worthy of a postcard.
The route includes some tunnels dug into the cliff that we cross in total darkness.
A few stops were made to allow us to get off the train and take pictures.
The oasis of Chebika is located in the middle of the desert, near the Algerian border, and it is considered to be the most beautiful in Tunisia.
We first went to the top of a steep cliff to get some pretty panoramic views of the Lower Atlas Mountains.
A goat was carved out of the rock. It looks great. Like a guardian, he watches over this magnificent region.
The verdant palm grove contrasts nicely with the orange color of the cliffs and the electrifying blue of the sky.
There are also the ruins of an ancient village which was abandoned following floods in 1969 which unfortunately caused the death of more than 400 people. This site was also used as the setting for the film "The English Patient".
We then took a small path to head into the hollow of a majestic canyon. This trail runs along the river and leads to a pretty waterfall.
It is possible to swim there. However, as we had to hit the road again to visit the oasis of Tamerza, we refrained from doing so. However, we will do it in Tamerza.
It also has a few merchants who sell souvenirs including the sand rose which is a rock formed by the crystallization of minerals and whose appearance resembles the petals of a rose.
After visiting the Oasis of Chebika, we went to a belvedere located on the side of the road to admire the gorges of Mides.
This magnificent canyon is located near the border separating Tunisia from Algeria and stretches over a distance of 3 kilometers.
It is distinguished by its rounded shapes and layers of stratified rock shaped by erosion.
We then went to the Oasis of Tamerza which is located along a deep canyon.
Water sources come out of the cliff and flow into the canyon in the form of waterfalls.
Several have also put on their swimsuits and placed themselves directly under the waterfalls to cool off.
The landscape is truly picturesque and the sun at the end of the day illuminates the walls of the canyon, giving it shimmering colors.

1. This is about 50 km from Tozeur, so around 1 hour to go there. 2. The train is called "Le Lézard rouge". Don't miss this activity if you are going there. The landscape is amazing...
