I guess there are certain technical criteria which critics look for but judging an artist’s work is purely subjective in my opinion. I’m certain many viewers disagree with the final choices but that’s part of the glory of any art. Whatever, I really do enjoy this series and look forward to a new season.

Invasive, not only from the artist's view but ours, too. Their intrusive interrupting of the artists during the timed period is maddening! We need a little Bette Davis retribution. 😉

Absolutely. There was so much going on in that room. I feel that they had decided to push forward the black artist well before the competition. As she was far behind the others in the final result. And her work, at that point, did not measure up. I believe she was already a favorite pre- competition. She is a unique, and excellent artist in her final works. But not better under the time limits and atmosphere of this setting.

Unfortunately, it makes good tv. How else will you draw someone in, with silence?. Being an artist means that others will find praise or fault depending on the eye. I do not work in this medium, yet I do see talent in every artist. ❤

What bugs me is that being a fab artist is not enough, a painting must include a gimmick of some kind, which I find annoying. And a sad commentary upon what is regarded as art today.
@LuckerStomp
@LuckerStomp 3 месяца назад
@@pamelacorbett8774 It doesn't have to include a gimmick. The judges just..would really like if you had one lol, it's clear they have some sort of bias. What they really want is difference though and it is unfair to an extent but a painting definitely doesn't have to have a gimmick.

They are all winners! Looking at Samira's works reminds me of Cezanne's paintings and the way he applied the paint...he also had a backlash from the public for being different...and look at what happened; now he is celebrated and he inspired most of the Impresionists! Congratulations Samira, your perception is different and I applaud you for it.

what a unique concept for the sitters ... but i don't know why Samira's paintings keep getting picked...way too abstract and I find that there is very little likeness to the sitters ... especially when the choosing was happening, the judges commented on some of the others' paintings that there was no real likeness ...Samira's has the least likeness and yet gets picked? I don't get it

@@shizahkhalid9893 The final and the winner's prize for this season were already uploaded weeks ago (the uploader did them right after the first episode). I wasn't thrilled by her in any of her episodes, but this one for the semi final was probably her weakest in my opinion.

@katalinelo8011
@katalinelo8011 8 месяцев назад
@@ArtSawce I don't mind unfinished, 4 hours are really short for many artists. In earlier seasons they had a painter who painted with similarly big brushstrokes, a bit abstract, looked unfinished but in his case he achieved that it looked good in the end, despite all of that. So this style of Samira can look good, she just couldn't get it to that point in my opinion. I hoped she will do better with more time, and her commission before the final was promising, but what she delivered to the museum is very questionable, very unfinished despite having weeks to work on. I hope she improved in the five years that passed since this was recorded, because she clearly had potential.
@victormorales3604
@victormorales3604 8 месяцев назад
Samira won even tho she only painted one sitter, not both, then she went on to win artist of the year? It just feels like the judges had her declared winner as soon as she stepped in the door on the very first day. She is obviously talented but this episode she clearly lacked superiority among the other artists.

@katalinelo8011
@katalinelo8011 8 месяцев назад
It is boring if it is only a perfectly executed painting in the style of the old masters. That would be something like an assignment for school. But being modern and different and edgy just for the sake of it isn't the right approach either. Golden middle. I like when they select more of an underdog, but for a portrait competition the bare minimum should be that you can clearly recognise the sitter. From the artists' perspective it is great to have been appreciated by professionals, but I think it is an equally high (or even higher) praise to get selected by the sitter.

@deejieweejie815
@deejieweejie815 2 месяца назад
The distinction between drawing and painting is seldom. However, when you’re being simple “drawings are dry media and paintings are wet media” but many artists who use pastel as their primary medium refer to the craft as a "painting" rather than a "drawing.” Pastels are a different type of medium as they are halfway between paints and pencils. Pastels may be used as a simple drawing tool for marks and broad passages, such as in this sixteenth-century preparatory work by Jacopo Bassano. Its use can also be complex. When mixed with water or oil, pastel forms an opaque paint-like substance that may be applied by brush to produce accents and highlights. A variety of liquids are often mixed with soft pastels to aid blending, including water, rubbing alcohol, acetone and oil painting solvents, which the final result of the art form is technically a painting. Most artists refer to their pastel work as a painting rather than a drawing.

It's emblematic of the cultural shift to extolling the mediocre in everything and castigating refinement. I wouldn't trust those judges to recommend an artist to do a portrait of me for $10,000 when I could just go up to the street to the university and get an art student to do it who I selected for $100 (+materials) that I'd actually like.
@bluefox5331
@bluefox5331 9 месяцев назад
That's alright. Everyone's taste is different, that's why judging art will be subjective. For me, the direction I want to go with my art and the art I enjoy admiring most is somewhat blocky- I find that when you blend too much it all just starts looking.. average, like a photograph. But art can make you feel so much more if you dare to not replicate it exactly as it is. I love pieces that work with light and dark in a block-ish way, it makes me feel more when the colors are done right but it isn't all blended all the way to oblivion. I guess what I am looking for is somewhat impressionistic art, and I definitely agree with the impressionists that it captures the feeling and the moment.
@katalinelo8011
@katalinelo8011 8 месяцев назад
@@wolfgangk1 no artist, not even a student, should do a painting of a considerable size for as less as a 100, their time and skills are much more valuable. But you can get a decent picture from 500 up I'd think, depending on size, quality and experience of the painter. Art schools are often looking for models too, so it would be a way to apply as a model, and then contact the student who's work you liked the most :D They would already be familiar with your features.

I feel that this project was sort of sabotaged at the gate. The sitters should have been allowed to sit in their chairs straight away upon entering the space. Then proceed to converse with the critics, and each other for a bit, allowing them to settle into the atmosphere, and meld with eachother naturally. In this way, the artists would have been allowed to capture the truely organic essence of the relationship. Clearly the playful comradery between the two was lost in the body language., due to the awkward poses that they fixed on prematurely. Each of the eight artistst seemed to present two figures at odds with eachother. Like two waring nations. Unwilling to yeild. Dissatisfied with the others resolve. Or as the man said... Two lovers in the final throws of a bad relationship. Or perhaps, a father and daughter in a stand off. I think the fact that the contrast between the intial body language of the structured poses, conflicting with the blossoming rapore between the two, served to stymie the artists in their ability to carry through, and resolve the pose with the more light hearted exchange they were witnessing. Which subconsciously, would be a very difficult task.
