The boy who never got to call his parents because he was talking to the emergency services breaks my heart. He's such a hero but I'm so sad he never got to say goodbye to his loved ones. Rip to everyone who passed away.
Ye indeed is a hero rest in peace choi Deok-ha oppa rip to everyone that passed away 🙏🏻 I was crying whe i watched it and i wrote a comment but its very very long so read it if u want❤rip everyone that passed away including choi deok-ha♡such a caring and kind boy love you oppa
Yeah when she said that they didnt have any communication because most of tze crew had left i just knew that he was the only reason they still had some communication
I watched all of the news as it was happening 10 years ago - watched the videos as it streamed, watched at messages and info about phone calls to families flooded the internet. He was the first to call the authorities, but I didn't know until this video that he remained on the communications with the authorities. Then, in the months after the tragedy, the news was about "coast guards etc were tipped off about a raid and deleted files" that were related to the Sewol ferry was all over the internet. I honestly had not realized until today - if Choi's call was so long, where is the transcript of it? If it was so long, it must have been on those deleted files. And how vile and disrespectful must that person or those persons be to wipe evidence of a boy's desperate call for help when he and his friends futilely and publicly died waiting for it. The people who deleted evidence and videos from the coast guard or marines, or whatever offices they did it from have to be ashamed of themselves, and no punishment is enough for their part in covering this tragedy.
Which is actually true in a biological sense. Rats understand when a boat is sinking so they jump off board knowing that they chances of survival are slightly better that way.
I can’t stop crying thinking about how alone, scared, and abandoned the kids must felt. They trusted the adults, and they were completely just left to die. Seeing the pics of them waiting to be rescued, like i cannot imagine the fear they must have been feeling. Knowing they may not ever be able to see their family again :((
It says a lot about those kids that many of their first thoughts were of others: telling their families that they love them and supporting their classmates. Beautiful, selfless souls
The thing that gets me the most about this story out of all the ways the adults on that boat failed those children and other passengers is the repeated message that was played over the PA speaker system telling them to stay put and stay where they were at. That is the main thing that sticks out to me as an indicator that this whole thing was some type of sabotage or a way to sacrifice these lives. We never found out who put it on , although I'm sure the captain knows, who made the recording, and who was instructed to play it considering it went against all logic and anybody with the least amount of knowledge on the safety of boats and ships would know that that would be a horrible set of instructions to give the people ( and hundreds of students onboard a boat). Definitely more people need to be held responsible than just the captain. But he is trash as well.
I once saw a documentary about the Sewol incident and bawled my eyes out. Later I did an assignment for school about this and bawled my eyes out again while doing some research. Now I listen to Stephanie telling the story again and guess...I'm crying once more. I don't even cry often, but this whole thing about Sewol is just heartbreaking. Seeing the victims and their family I just can't hold my tears. I pray for everyone who suffered from this incident.
💕💕💕 sameeee with the crying… My fiancé said there was something wrong with me when we watched Hachi and I cried throughout thee whole thing and he kept laughing in disbelief (he’s a big crier for movies & anime)… He thought it was “messed up” that out of all the stuff we ever watched over a couple years that it took a movie with a dog to get me to cry 😅 He doesn’t even get to witness me watching this so he prolly won’t believe me lolz. I can’t imagine how hard that assignment had to of been hard!!! Was it a paper?
I’m about 35 minutes into this and I’m not sure how to continue watching. The fact that the parents were trying and doing as much as possible breaks my heart. They did more than the Coast Guard and the Government. What horrible people. The captain better know what the consequences are of knowing what he did to all the passengers, and even some kids. Bless all these parents who went through and are still going through these undeserved deaths, As well as Rest in Peace for all those brave children.
In my trip to Seoul, my friends and I ran into a Sewol manifestation and signature collecting to bring justice and show what really went on, they were still fighting. We signed and we were given yellow ribbon keychains and I still carry mine on my backpack and my wallet and everytime I see it I hope that the families and the survivors are doing well and that justice and the truth are really served.
I honestly had to stop the video about half way in and just have a good cry. It’s just horrible how these children and their families have had to suffer for no reason. Just for someone’s pride. Thank you for your great coverage of this case.
Poor children…I was born in 2014. I feel ashamed. And sad. The captain is messed up. I hope they rest in piece. The amount of children that would be able to survive if the US navy had helped would be so much more. It’s been 10 years since they’ve passed, imangine how they would look now? They’d be around 28, 27, in their twenties or thirties. The US navy should have helped even without permission, imagine all the teens that would be saved, how their familys would be happier. 🎗️🎗️🎗️may they rest in peace, I hope they’ll be in a better place now. I want all the bodies to be found, I want all of them to be put to rest, I wanted this to never happen, I want everyone to be saved, why can’t they be saved? Because of the captain, the crew members that escaped with him, the announcement to tell the teens to stay put, the US navy that wasn’t able to help, I feel annoyed that people are just wearing fancy stuff, tapping away on their laptop, and kids are drowning, ARE YOU KIDDING ME?! THERES TEENS, THEIR DEAD, OR THEIR DYING, DYING. I feel so upset! They need to be put to rest properly! Find the 9 bodies! Put them to rest!
I’m half way thru this video but I’ve seen it already from someone else and the captain was being yelled at to go back on the ship because he just wanted to save himself, they were going back and forth with him to force him back on the ship. He would lie and say he was back on the boat, wouldn’t answer questions directly etc. very crazy to hear
34:53 I have heard countless sob and horror stories, I didn't think anything would surprise or move me at this point. But that line of the parents having hope and bringing blankets for their kids made me want to break down in tears.
I remember crying when spring day was released just because the song brought a well to my throat, and this is when I had no idea it was connected to the Sewol ferry. Now, after watching this, I feel that same pain in my throat and feel that much more pain and longing when thinking of the song. Terrible tragedy, I hope the victims rest in peace. Thank you for making this
Right?? And how on earth did they think this would be the better outcome rather then sucking up their pride, admit their mistakes and let other people help them? They must’ve figured a tragedy like this would be the outcome, and that they wouldn’t be able to keep this many deaths a “secret”??? I just don’t understand
@@frozenmonster7444 they only lost reputation but so many people lost their lives, so many families lost their loved ones. the authorities should've been given death sentence or at least lifetime in jail.
I just cried so much. This was so awful. The absolute disgusting pride the Korean president had over asking for help. To let these children die instead.....my heart is broken
I started crying when learning about the boy who was calling the emergency services instead of his parents. That act shows how brave and good of a human he was. I hope his parents will be okay.
I personally knew Suhyun and his parents are blessed with the fact that his son went out trying to save people! They're thankful that everyone all over the world is remembering 04.16❤🩹💕
The idea of all these parents grabbing blankets so their kids wouldn’t be cold when they saw them makes me cry. It breaks my heart knowing that those kids never got those blankets.
@-.Animegurl.-8694 it is! It’s disgusting that they claimed everyone was saved, I spoke to my brother about this and he said “maybe it wasn’t safe for them (the volunteer scuba divers) to go in? “ and I quickly told him that wasn’t the case, as they said it was the best time for them to go in. It’s absolutely disgusting what the coast guard did during this.
I keep choking back tears, but when the civilian said “ if I had saved everyone, then I would’ve felt proud of myself” had me. Omg this is horrific and so sad. Bless all those who actually helped those students.
I don’t usually cry for these sad stories but this one actually got me especially since so many young compassionate ppl died but the older crew were selfish and survived
Yup this and other reasons are the reasons I will never get on to about or a plane it is way too dangerous and it doesn't seem like the government really cares and there's not much they can do Then if they do care it's still so risky
I really just don't want to leave my house. Call me coward if all you want but I was terrified when I first got to know about this. And also the Itaewon tragedy.😢
seems.the Supreme leader should be jailed than put in a cage ans subnerged into dark cold water until he breaths water soaked in deasil fuel. Same with captain and the crew that fled. Why would the captain tuen the dangerous boat over to idiots that obviously didn't have a clue.. the lies is what got me. Poor children and family.. that American Navy ship and crew could have taken over and saved those poor souls.
no, you mean maybe 100%, they were told to stay inside the dorms so they could escape themselves, the kids that disobeyed survived, the kids that listened were good kids
I hope that when the cowards that left the kids to die finally die themselves that in their afterlife they are made to drown in cold water again and again like the children that they left to die. That would be justice.
Attention: Coast Guards of The World and Concerned Leaders: I computed 30 helicopters supported coordinated with 1 life boat each (buddies), with each saving 10 pax, easily saves 300 people. Do this 2 times say 30 minutes per travel, will save 600 people, in 60 minutes. I believe the emergency was detected at 830AM. Vessel sank 11AM. Available time of 120-150 Minutes. Time is of the essence and an organised rescue technique tactic strategy is a standard for rescue operations especially for marine SOS. It is so horrifying and devastating how the lack of concern and competence killed many lives just like that. I am not even from Marine or Navy, at all. Just an ordinary concerned citizen. I believe every passenger from now on should have access to calling the Marine, Navy, AirForce and Coast Guard Hotlines.

As a Navy sailor one of the first things we are taught out at sea is when and how to evacuate the ship. If the ship is sinking, staying put is the same as saying you want to die.
My father was a master seaman, a captain. He would always say that when an emergency occurs, no matter how dangerous, the captain will always be the last one to leave the ship. I remember him getting so angry when he heard this news. He wanted the captain sentenced for life or receive death penalty.
You know what else is sad in this story. The only students that DID survived, are the ones who didn't stay put and actually jumped off the boat. There was a woman named Park Jiyong working there who even gave her life jacket and push the students in the water just so they could live while she didn't
@@victorianarcisafonseca No need to be rude; it's a 2hr video. The kids joking about it being the titanic struck me. You can sometimes get sort of detached when hearing stories like this, but those comments and jokes makes you realize how relatable and heartbreakingly human this was. And then to officers eating ramen. No words can explain the hatred I feel towards the captain and those officers

"Crew goes out last" made me tear up at work. How selfish were the cowards that jumped ship first. May they know the terrors they put the passengers through.
I wouldn’t care if the cowards left first but at least tell the passengers to get out of their rooms!! Turn off the announcement!! It breaks my heart that they trusted them to the very last moment but they failed them. Pathetic cowards.
That boy giving up his chance to say goodbye to his parents in order to give as much information as he could to emergency services is so heartbreaking I heard of this tragedy before from Brick Immortar but your coverage of it just made me cry.
I watched the videos done by Brick as well. But Stephanie's video goes more into depth of the human emotions that were played with and hurt. I do wish she had shown the footage of that poor father giving the most respectful bow possible, just begging to be told the truth. Heartbreaking 😢💔
the fact they just watched the boat sink is what actually hurts.. this year those kids, KIDS , would be 26-27. it pains me that they had to go through all of that 😢
Important info for all people still watching - if you are ever in a sinking ship - NEVER put you life jacket on inside the ship - ALWAYS put it on when you are fully outside. In many ship sinking cases people died because they put their life jackets on while still inside. A life jacket will always push you up and if the water level gets to high you will not be able to get out of the ship because you will be unable to go under water and f.ex. swim outside the ship. Secondly ships tend to have narrow corridords, windows and doors - you will not be able to go out in a life jacket. This is a type of a tip that can literally save your life - ALWAYS PUT YOUR LIFE JACKET ONLY WHEN YOU ARE OUTSIDE THE SHIP
Thx ! It's logical when you think about and better think about and get aware of this before the case happen !! Wasn't aware till yet , so thx !! 👍👏🙏🫂🤞🍀
It's the same for airplanes as well. During a ditching (landing on water), it is imperative that you *don't inflate* your lifejacket until *outside* of the plane, or there is a possibility that you could get trapped inside the cabin.
Very good to know. The captain musnt have known this. I know some situations wont survive impact during certain situations however only good reason to not wait to inflate would be so perhaps ur body can be retrieved or atleast thats what i would think. I think this because certain impacts force alone would kill, or frigid waters too and if no chance of survival atleast ur loved ones would have a body to bury. Thoughts?
This wasn’t ineptitude, this was criminal. The one that gets to me is the kid telling his parents to never let his younger brother go on a school trip and end up like him. That boy will always remember that his older brother’s last thoughts were looking out for him.
it was actually a little sister in the translation of the 20 minute long video but yeah his point still remains clear that he does not want his younger sibling to go on a field trip
Did anyone else notice that she said that people still to this day show their support to the parents of their lost loved ones by tying yellow ribbons everywhere and she, (Stephanie) is wearing yellow and has ribbons in her hair?? ❤❤ 1:45:29

The fact that the captain just left the ship DISGUISED AS A PASSENGER knowing he is killing so many students with such a bright future right there and then is SO DISGUSTING. This has to be a joke. The government even tried hiding it. Disgusting. My deepest condolences to the passengers on the cruise and the families that had to go through the loss of their children.

Fun fact for those who don't know: the Titanic's captains all made a conscious decision to go down with the ship just so they could get as many passengers to safety as possible.
It’s just so unbelievable that the man who made the blueprints to the Titanic actively helped people and yet the Korean government watched 300+ people die. Heart breaking.
I hate the fact that the U.S Navy offered them help and they refused. This tragedy disgusts me, I literally cannot believe how a person can do such things.
Hubris and pride are very powerful bedfellows. There is probably more to this than that, like the government had actual knowledge of how this ship was used and regularly overloaded. It seems like they were trying to keep prying eyes out.
when she said the boys were sacrificing their life jackets to make sure all the teachers and girls had one, i lost it. the fact 16 year old boys had more compassion, loyalty, bravery, and empathy than grown men who were supposed to take care of all 300+ passengers enrages me. i hope if any of those boys survived they’re living a good life, they truly deserve it for all they did ):
@@sillyphobiazsadly most of the passengers died due to incompetence. like someone said in the comments, this tragedy could have been 99% avoidable but nothing was done.
The diver who said he couldn't touch his wife and kids anymore because he "can't touch skin" gave me chills. Gave me too vivid of imagination and feeling of what the divers had gone through.
The worst part of this tragedy is that they could've been saved, the fact that pride, and cowardliness had killed 350 students is both devastating and disgusting.
The women telling her boyfriend that she cant talk, because her phone was low on charge and some students still needed to call their parents broke me. All these innocents and heroes being betrayed by the assholes in charge makes me so mad
The most heart wrenching and sickening part of this story is that, had they just accepted the help from the US marines or even Japanese coast guard, they could have avoided the tragedy all together. It would have just been a boat that sank and uh oh, lost some money. But no, they let their fragile pride get in the way and children had to pay for it with their lives. Absolutely repulsive.
Not just the US either there were different countries rhat offered their help as well, so it was just insanity if a government thinks that a bunch of dead kids is better than another country doing a rescue for you
Out of all the cases Stephanie has spoken on. This the most heartbreaking. What kind of world we are living in when children lives means absolutely nothing in the eyes of government officials.
Have you not seen the US and their refusal of gun control? Guns are more important than the students. Sewol ferry is just the other side of the same coin.
Stephanie saved my family's lives! I started watching this episode kinda later in the night. Maybe 10 minutes before the episode ended, I heard a loud pop and looked up to see an outlet had caught fire after a lithium battery charging near it had exploded. Now when I say late, I mean well after midnight; making it into the early morning hours when this happened. No one would have been awake at the time this happened, nor would have anyone been close to the room this happened in. I was up because I got lost in how stephanie tells stories. I know she'll probably never see this but: Thank you ❤ If it wasn't for rotten mango I fear what would have happened that night.
@@bangtan_heartu5881 A lot. I recommend going to wikipedia for the bare bones. But there has been more in depth stuff if you search But basically the government, from the top down, attacked any and all victim's families that spoke out. Wire taps, threats, accusations of being North Korean spies trying to undermine the county. Anything they could do to shut the people up. After all, to them, it was "just a ferry accident."
The government just wanted to save “their faces.” But… saving 350+ people wouldn’t just “save your face”, people would see them as a hero! Their logic makes NO sense, the absolute IDIOCY. My heart breaks for every single victim and their families, every single official failed them… makes my head spin
In short: it doesn’t even feel that the government was protecting their ego, it mostly feels like they were too lazy to do anything. (Putting my mind into a politician pov) not only would saving all those lives protect your ego, it would boost it and your ratings because everyone would see that you’re saving their child, 350+!!! It was sheer laziness and murder, 100%
It's a huge problem with Asian culture. To admit there is a problem, to them, is "losing face." So everyone must pretend there isn't a problem and act like normal. Stay where you are. Do nothing. Don't talk about the problem. Don't try to solve the problem. Maybe it will solve itself eventually. To anyone not in that culture it seems like madness.

Fr. The fact that Titanic Captain decided to go down with the ship because it was "his" ship (as in he steered/controlled it) is even more praise worthy seeing as how the captain on this ship was utterly pathetic and a coward who valued his own life over others
@@mota._.hOne of the most well-known and well-respected rules in the maritime community is that the Captain is the last to deboard in case of emergency. Either you stay onboard until everyone is safe or you go down with the ship. Being the Captain of a ship isn't supposed to be taken lightly; as the Captain, you are personally responsible for everyone and everything on board. When he saw that the Sewol was going down, he should have gone down with her.
The navy’s help was likely refused initially because it would reveal internationally exactly how unsafe, incompetent, and preventable this situation was.
The government knew if the navy got involved there would be an extensive military investigation, that's the norm for anything where the military is involved, whereas if it was denied the government could hide it behind an incompetent internal investigation. The reason simply that investigations into the ferry company would reveal extensive corruption that went all the way up to that b-tch President daughter of a dictator Park Geun Hye.
That’s my suspicion too but I feel like they could’ve swallowed their pride and made an excuse. For example, the Navy had the numbers and were closer than our coast guards so we let them help us. It would’ve looked better publicly that they saved the most people than refusing their help to save face.
This was straight up murder!! No efforts to rescue these kids, straight out LYING about the passengers!? And not even caring that they are literally drowning beneath that ship? This is so infuriating I could cry, I feel so strongly for those poor families and the innocent souls that lost their lives on the ship…this is just a disgrace and would have been so preventable….
What's even worse is that there were US and Japanese vessels nearby. Upon hearing over the radio the ferry capsized, they raced to the scene to offer help. The local government not only refused to accept aid but ordered the vessels to leave and mind their own business. Those kids could of been saved if one or both vessels said 'screw it' and forced their way in to help. Political fallout can be dealt with later but at least those kids would of been saved and able to go home alive.
The kids that managed to survive were the ones that didn’t listen and refused to just stay in their rooms and die. They went against the captains orders and went up to the top of the boat where they got rescued by civilian boats. The other kids that stayed all unfortunately died because they were failed by the adults they had been taught to trust and save them. That’s why it’s important to teach children to think for themselves, it can be life or death. May they rest in peace.
The thing that frustrates me here is that in a normal rescue that follows proper protocol, it is actually best to stay in the room you’re expected to be in. Because it can impede staff and rescue efforts to have a throng of people on deck and following proper evacuation procedures, when conducted, is the best policy. But when those procedures aren’t followed, your stateroom is the most dangerous place to be, as we see here. Edited for clarity.
I wish they had named the teachers that forced the kids to stay in their cabins. They directly caused the deaths of the majority of the students. Sure some teachers helped. But some caused their deaths. Yeah those teachers died too but I don't think that should be overlooked.
@@WhitneyDahlin I’m sure they didn’t know what to do either. Those teachers probably thought they were doing the right thing based on the instructions they heard.
"Mom, Dad what about my little brother?" "Don't ever let him go on a school trip" "Please don't go on a school trip if you don't want to end up like your brother, okay?" It's terrible these innocent kids had to suffer because they didn't want to get help from the U.S Navy and because their captain is a selfish monster

As a Korean, I have to apologize. At first, I was going to say this video does not even begin to do justice to the amount of bullshit of the tragedy. I did not realize how long this video was at first, and that the sheer amount of bullshittery makes a video like this necessarily long. It was that bad. I truly appreciate your effort with this video. The retaliation done after the fact was not enough. EVERYBODY in leadership should have been straight up given a death sentence. I don't say that lightly, I am not particularly for capital punishment. But this calls for mass capital punishment.
I really like Brick Immortar's coverage of this as well if you haven't seen it. I think he might have been the first largish English speaking channel to cover it and he's the first engineering focused channel I know who did. He mispronounces almost every name if Stephanie's pronunciation is accurate but he did two feature length documentaries (part one: the tragedy, part two: the cover up) covering the story, the shipping mistakes, the rescue mistakes, and how much everything about it angers him and should anger us. It's a very different style from this but very well done.
The passengers are at fault too. They should have just got out of their cabins instead of just mindlessly doing whatever they are told, like cattle. They put on life jackets, just to get trapped inside the ship, and never get to use them? Lmao, natural selection.
@@Sashaiordanov And that's the effect of that. It would be better if they weren't trained to, but they were, and they wouldn't let anyone untrain them. Most of the things I read pretty much summarized that no one could really get out there. There were so many things that went wrong and so many things that could have been done. It's so sad.
I don't often cry at these kinda videos, but this one had me in tears several times - and I'm only halfway through. Especially the clips of family members crying and begging for help just broke me, this is such a tragedy and it was so preventable
A fisherman managed to save 25 people all by himself. Yet the coast gaurds and army, and marines didnt save a single person except the coward captain and his 6 crew members. This story is so traumatizing and heartbreaking. I cried listening to this video. The goverment is a complete failure. These poor children and their families. RIP 😔
He committed because he couldn’t bare the fact that he couldn’t save more students from that ferry he heard their cries every night and their pleads for help
I think smth similar happened with Japan Airlines Flight 123. They crashed into a mountain, the US had military helicopters and rescuers hovering on site ready to help, but the government was like "nah we got this bro" and the Japanese thought "yo ain't no way anybody survived that" so they launched the rescue next morning instead. 500+ people died, but there were 4 survivors. The locals and survivors said they heard voices at the crash site all night, but in the hours that followed, they slowly disappeared... National pride is such a stupid excuse to deny foreign aid. 😢
@@silverdandylmao Jesus that's horrible! It's the US military for Gods sakes, hands down the best military in the world, let them help! Who says no to help from marines??
My husband is active duty and I know a lot of military and veterans over the last 19 years.. it would absolutely destroy them. They’d risk their lives to save those kids. Horribly heartbreaking 🥺
The students trusted thier teachers, the teachers trusted the crew members and the crew members trusted their captain. And the captain escaped faster than anyone! Telling the passengers to wait is like telling them to wait for their own death!
@@j-id2zttheir egos and positions were at stake which they lost anyway. This whole situation is so frustrating so many people and institutions failed the passengers on that Ferry.
@@gw6667lmao not rlly? responding to ur first point, murder isn't a question of intent. it doesn't matter if u didn't *mean* to kill someone if you already *did* kill someone, the deed's done, and you're at fault there's nothing more to say
@@faeyly where you "mean" to (i.e., intent) out are "at fault" are two different things. If there's no intent but you still cause the death of sunshine is manslaughter. So yeah, there's a difference
this was negligence, this was egoism, this was murder, I think no one in this world can believe that so many people let so much students live, they had a life to live and lack of organization and negligence deprived them to. It's an horrible tragedy, I can't imagine what families and friends of the victims felt.
The 22 year old woman, who took off her vest and gave it to another kid, and continued to go back into the ship to chest deep water to save others. Absolutely heroic! How brave 😢🙏🌹🫡
@@loucipher7782 and if she didn’t know where the PA system was located? Or how to use it? She made the best choices she could in the moment and saved lives at the cost of her own. Have some heart.
I don't usually cry when listening to your stories but I teared up here for those adults who stayed on the boat sacrificing themselves to try and save the kids. Like the teacher who didn't speak to her own partner longer because she wanted the kids to be able to use her phone. Such heroes.
"The only thing worse than death is a death that could've been prevented" -Unknown The worst part of this is the fact that if the boating company took the extra safety precautions, none of this would've happened.
Not extra safety precautions, more like the BARE MINIMUM. but no, they couldn't do even that. It's the whole goddamn system. Corrupt officials, lazy rescue members, cowardly crew. weed them out, replace them with people who actually would do their jobs properly.
@@lizxu322 EXACTLY, like how are they going to do whatever they want withought thinking about people's safety? They have absolutely no morals, it's stupid.
Even a simple protocol like SECURING THE CARS DOWN would’ve changed the course of this tragedy. If someone would’ve turned the PA off, like just a random crew member that was already on their way off the boat like the pussy they are would’ve turned OFF the PA system- more children would have LIVED.
The passengers are at fault too. They should have just got out of their cabins instead of just mindlessly doing whatever they are told, like cattle. They put on life jackets, just to get trapped inside the ship, and never get to use them? Lmao, natural selection.
This is the saddest and most horrifying story I ever heard. I cried during the entire video. It's just so heartbreaking to know these parents were forced to wait for their kids to die.
Fun fact for those who don't know: the Titanic's captains all made a conscious decision to go down with the ship just so they could get as many passengers to safety as possible.
Yep. The titanic tragedy is made slightly better by the fact that they saved as many people as they could. It's still awful, but there were as many survivors as they could get. The sewol tragedy is infuriating, so many authorities failed these people. They barely even tried to help, literally about 1/4 of the passengers died because they were just left.
@@Moo-2310 Nah, one part of the Titantic tragedy is that there were NOT saved as many as possible. Most of the lifeboats were only half full, hundreds of more lives could have been easily saved. However there were many unlucky circumstances and small bad decisions of many different people that all came together in the worst way, so the fault lies with no one in particular and almost everyone involved did what they thought was best in the moment (even if it wasn't). As opposite to here where the Captain very clearly is a disgusting coward who had no intention of doing the "best" thing, as well as people actively choosing to lie and cover up the truth instead of focusing on rescuing lifes.
The fact that a 22 year old part time stayed to save more people... Literally says: 'crew goes out last' Meanwhile the captain + big part of the crew abandoned ship and the passengers the moment they could. Just mind-blowing...
@@Thebatcavepetfriendlybakery "Captain go down with the ship" is a universal thing. But no, the captain is just legally supposed to be the last to leave the ship, not die with the ship. But the captain IS supposed to be the last to leave because they need to help all passenger/crew evacuate before himself.
I can’t even imagine the last moments these kids lived. I can’t imagine the fear and the knowing that there’s no escaping what’s about to happen. These videos of the parents being frantic and screaming into the mic made me lose it….
as a mom, the amount of helplessness these parents mustve felt wouldve been hell literally, like you know your child is out there and can still be saved, yet people are literally lettting them die watching it too, and even have the audacity to lie to your face as if they are not doing exactly that but doing anything.. crazy
But only high school kids would realize their ship is sinking and it's getting bad... then some start singing the theme song to Titanic. That reminds you almost of the band that kept on playing as that ship kept sinking.
@@darthprodigal9401 its very sobering to think about that. like, they really were just kids. they were kids and they were joking around because they were scared and needed levity. who can say they havent made jokes when theyre in distress? its a common way to cope, especially when youre young. its heartbreaking to think about. they were just scared kids.
As a Navy sailor, I can say with full confidence that every single person would have survived had the offer been accepted. Especially with the number of Marines on board and the number of rescue swimmers that every Navy vessel is required to have. Since there were Marines on board I figure it was an aircraft carrier, which also has 2 rescue boats on board ready to be deployed at all times. This catastrophe was ENTIRELY avoidable
There were more than 2 marines for every passenger. The casualties would have been single or max double digits, only people drowned because they were stuck somewhere with no air. This is one of the most insane cases ever. Titanic as nothing on this
Exactly!!! As soon as she said the declined the marines I was livid!!!! Those kids would still be alive. I’m not to the end yet but I really hope the captain and whoever else on the crew went to jail this was criminal.
My jaw dropped when I learned they declined help from the US. The US Navy is considered one of the finest and most skilled in the world. I can't believe they said no.
It’s insane because the US is supposed to be south koreas BIGGEST ALLY! If there was ANY military in the world that would save these people, it’s the US!
I feel this. I would do anything for my younger sister. I speak poorly of her because, well, older sibling. I tease her a lot, but I love her and she knows it. I hope the captain and every selfish person here, rot in hell.
Fr same. I’m a older sister to and I would kill myself if something happened to my younger sister..yes we fight a lot. But I really do love her and I would never make it without her..❤
@@alibiiiiiiiii as long as it's not South Korea, I wouldn't worry. the US navy was there ready to help, if they were allowed, most likely nobody would have died. that said, it's a fact that sharks like to follow cruise ships. enjoy the trip!
What's even more remarkable is the fact she probably was properly trained on safety. Hearing that they spent $ to provide a fake safety certificate for their crews explains why so many of the crew just rescued themselves. They were shown what to do so they went on instinct to leave but that's also me trying to rationalize why you would leave knowing the kids had gotten off the boat. Such a senseless loss of lives.
I remember this happening. It was on the news in Japan 24/7 at the time. I remember thinking the reason must've been that there was probably something on that boat that someone with a lot of money/power didn't want found. Oh, and among the massive blame game, S.Korea tried to blame the incident on Japan cause the Ferry company bought the cargo ship from a Japanese Freight company... but it was the Ferry company that decided to renovate the retired cargo ship into a passenger ship (poorly.) It wasnt sold with the intent to be a passenger ship.
I'm glad I'm not the only one who remembered it. My teachers in school (US) would have us watch the reports of the sinking, and months later, the training being done for divers in case of a recovery mission. It was only now, though, that I realize the added emotional investment of my teachers at the time, since we were also a sophomore class.
This is the most well-researched and well-told video I've seen on the Sewol tragedy. I am filled with so much sorrow for the victims and their families. Thank you for providing a comprehensive video on this. I think a lot of people will find this educational (as the tragedy is now a big fixture in South Korean history). This is a really important topic that should never be forgotten.
Brick Immortar also did a very thorough 2 part documentary on Sewol that goes into a lot of the technical detail too. \i highly recommend watching it for more info.
The part where those kids were singing the Titanic theme and cracking Titanic jokes hit me hard-I probably would've done the same. It really is a coping mechanism, and a way to accept things. Its a sort of "I'm going down in a horrible way, but I will not be silent and I will spend it laughing if I can" thing. It's comfort, taking something in this situation and controlling it. It's heartbreaking and horrifying.

Honorable and heroic. It's a sad fate as most often people who do good deeds end up dead, but sacrificing themselves for the lives of others, there is no greater respect to be given to heroes of that caliber.

As least they got disbanded for their cowardice. US SWAT does exactly the same thing, shows up, does nothing, won't let anyone else help, waits for everyone to die and bleed out, and then after the threat has been over for a few hours, finally tries to recover bodies and pretends to be heroes. They should be disbanded as well.
Can we get a round of applause for the P.E. teacher? Best P.E. teacher ever. May you rest in peace Ko Tun-Soo (I don't know if I spelled his name right and I apologize if I didn't). He truly was a hero with a kindhearted soul.
I cried so many times during this video. Seeing the happy smiling face of the P.E. teacher and hearing his body was found 3 YEARS after the incident. Finding out about the student that stayed in the phone with emergency services and didn't have the chance to contact his parents. Hearing about the actual courageous crew members that stayed behind to help the students. The young teacher that quickly contacted her parents and boyfriend to thank them and letting her students use her phone. Hearing how the grade went from 300 to 75. This story is so upsetting. Such an avoidable tragedy. My heart breaks for those who passed, those who survived and are struggling, and those who have lost someone. So many lives were affected
And the 6 year old girl who survived while her parents and brothers both died because they wanted to save her…. I can’t imagine how it was for her to suddenly not grow up with any parents.. 😥
I started bawling hearing about the little girl who was saved but lost her brother and parents. She had a beautiful family and ended up an orphan even without a sibling.
I felt this same way the other day reading an article from a flash flood in Pennsylvania were a mom, grandma, toddler and infant got swept away. The grandma was found and survived. The husband and an older child managed to survive. But they've found the bodies of the toddler and the mom. They haven't found the infant yet, but I'm not holding my breath on that. Life can be cruel.
there was an update of her somewhat around a year ago or so. She lives with her relative and is pretty much getting bullied at school because she has no parents. :(
