Thank you Jo, Caroline, and WDI! As always, you’re providing an intellectual lifeline and a sane space. We all need sane spaces!

Thanks a lot for this amazing conversation! I'm using Pateman, this book, for my Ph.D. and this conversation helped me a lot! You girls, rock!

In the first chapter Pateman says "A man's power as a father comes after he has exercised the patriarchal right of man (a husband) over a woman (wife)." But this statement ignores the fact that that man, before he was a husband, was a son. And as a son he would have been subject to the power of his father ... So isn't that argument circular? And doesn't this logical flaw undermine her assertion that "Political right originates in sex-right or conjugal right"?

Thank you, Jo and Caroline. It was so annoying to read all these theorists/philosophers/psychologists talk about man or when talking about women/woman they would talk absolute bollocks! I started avoiding their books and I realised that the main thinkers we've been taught about and gained recognition were all talking nothing accurate or useful about women.

This helped me so much with my assignment on sexual contract theory in my Gender & Politics class. I was struggling with the Pateman readings, this helps. Thank you for breaking this down!

I had to school myself to listen to women that were glammed up. I saw them as being insecure or needy, and less likely to report factually and intelligently.

This was super interesting. I wonder, could the contract theory be the reason why so many men are NEETs these days? They're losing the sex contract with women since we're not forced to stay with one man through marriage, so they're then refusing the work contract? Something to consider!

The book is a bit of a dry read, very academic, but worthwhile.

According to Clare Jane Jones, self-sovereignty is both a political myth, and a logical error; a product of the 'logic of sovereignty' which thinks of things and beings as being ontologically coherent by virtue of some essence. The reality is, she argues, is that things only exist and are understood in terms of relation. Our needs can never be completely met if we are understood as 'self-sovereign'. We must, instead understand our relation and interdependence to all other things.

I'm really interested in learning about social contracts and sexual contracts. When women "choose" positions of "subjugation", the examples you gave of sex work, marriage and BDSM practices, are they not making a contract with themselves? These types of "contract" aren't legally binding, consent can be withdrawn at any time. Women can get divorced, end relationships, change jobs etc.
