The Shadow of the Erdtree is a Giant Evergaol | Elden Ring Lore Theory

For the upcoming Elden Ring DLC, Shadow of the Erdtree, I take a closer look at the Evergaols, which act as a sort of interdimensional solitary confinement. And since Miyazaki confirmed that the veil we see in the trailer is symbolic of the Land of Shadow being sealed away, I also examine the different veils we can encounter in the game, including the Concealing Veil, the Mimic's Veil (aka Marika's Mischief), and even the Lost Grace in Roundtable Hold.
Putting everything together, I think the magic used in the Evergaols and the Mirage Rise were combined to seal away the Shadow of the Erdtree, turning it into a Supermax to contain Messmer.

Interesting thing is also that one of Morgott's titles is "The Veiled Monarch". Fitting for a king who was never seen by his people. So indeed veil works as a symbol of hiding something or someone. Also good catch with the evergaol, it makes a lot of sense. I think that the Land of Shadow may be where is the see between Leyndell and Limgrave, south of the Erdtree, where the famous little cloud rests. For someone who is a god - Marika - hiding the whole land behind the fog seems to be something very plausible. The Lands Between itself is veiled by the fog.

Great point! Personally, I think Morgott was using the Mimic's Veil before Godrick stole it. And I agree that the most likely place for the Land of Shadow would be that conspicuous sea surrounded by all those Divine Towers. Your comment also just reminded me that the Tarnished were specifically sent across a "Sea of Fog," so Marika has done that before!

I always wondered what's the deal with the broken end of the Divine Bridge behind the fortified manor in Leyndell. Its name and architecture suggest it would connect to a divine tower but the closest divine tower to it is to the left and at the bottom so unless the bridge was a massive slide that drops you atop Rykard's divine tower I don't think it makes sense. The teleporter on it takes you to Malenia's divine tower but Limgrave's divine tower also got a teleporter on its bridge to take you to the other side because it is broken. So where would the divine bridge connect to physically? If the Land of Shadow was south of Leyndell and got removed by the veil then it's possible the Divine Bridge connected to a place that's over there. And if the Erdtree overlaps perfectly with the shadow Erdtree that's getting strangled by the other tree then the building that the bridge likely connected to is the one with the crescent shape as that would be closest to Leyndell.

I do wonder if Miyazaki meant "the same space" in the same way that Evergaols appear to exist in the same physical space. Because it was immediately followed up with "the same universe". He could just mean that the Land of Shadows is part of the land mass of the Lands Between, just hidden and no longer reachable through conventional means. I agree it is very plausible that it now serves as a prison of sorts, just not originally built as one. Basically, it's Arkham City. Maybe it's not even because Messmer did something particularly bad, but that both he and the Lands of Shadow hold a lot of damaging secrets. After all, it is the place where Marika became a god. Edit: also, unrelated, but I hadn't noticed until now that the player character does that Crucible Knight wings incantation with a weapon in each hand. It's only a trailer, but if that's how it is in the game, it's probably an ash of war instead of an incantation.

All great points! I also agree with a lot of other lore theorists who think the Land of Shadow will take place in that gap on the map enclosed by all those Divine Towers. So Miyazaki could mean both! I really like that comparison to Arkham City, especially considering that Ordina was a town first and then an Evergaol. And given Marika's track record (I seriously wish the Lands Between had CPS), I could absolutely see Messmer being shunned and hidden away as an embarrassment or secret shame, and then he turned to all of those blasphemous powers we see in the trailer (kind of like Mohg). Good catch about the Crucible Wings! If it's an Ash of War, I hope it's one we can stick on just about any weapon, as opposed to it being a unique skill. But either way, I'm glad we're getting it!

@@garrulousgoldmask That does seem like a good place for it to be. After all, it seems like it might be underneath the Erdtree, and the Erdtree appears to fade away into the distance below in that general area. Hell, maybe the divine towers even play a role in keeping the prison secure. Those Crucible wings could also just be in that particular form for the trailer, while in the actual game being an incantation after all. The character is after all holding a weapon in each hand, while most ashes of war tend to sheathe one of the weapons while being performed.

I was thinking about the land of shadows functioning essentially as an evergaol earlier this morning too! Even if they aren't based in the same magic, they reflect a similar mindset of banishing unwanted/inconvenient things, which makes me think the same person or group is behind it.

The main argument against DLC being an Evergaol is precisely what you said in the beginning: those jails sit in the same spots metaphysically as their real-world counterparts. But here the landscape is nothing like looking out to the Lands Between, except with a few analogues: shadowtree=erdtree, structures below the shadowtree=Leyndell, etc. Apart from maybe a Four Belfries structure and a Cathedral of Manus Celes analogue, there doesn't seem to be an "alternate dimension of the base game" evergaol feel. For months, I wondered if the DLC would take place in parts of the vanilla game but in different eras or dimensions. For example, we'd travel through the Uhl/Uld ruins but with the palaces actually intact, from their golden age. Now that would be more "gigantic evergaol"-like, imo. Of course you could still be right. It's a nice metaphor even if it wasn't strictly true. Also, you're killing it with the casual jokes that almost pass by before we can register them. "Alos known as... Elden Ring's pause button". Lol

Its probably both an Evergaol, and a mimic veil hiding the gaol.

I think you're on to something with this... if you look at the center circle of the evergaol. It has that intertwined ring that's on the front of the artbook🤔🤔🤔

Do you think the first evergaol was an accidental effect of the meteor hitting farum azula which isolates placidusax outside of time?

0:19 actually, Mesmer is classified as a hero the god skin limbs isn’t really would striking it’s the fact that he has aspects of the crucible such as horns and fangs, scaled armor etc and wings

the Land of Shadow being an Evergaol sure seems like it! the purple color of the rift which the convicts come out of may allude to gravity magic, something that may keep them in place, literally trapping them there. That said, I think it's not too far to assume that that other theory of The Land of Shadow being in the center of the map, with the Divine Towers serving as holdings for the veil, has something to do with it. The towers have meteorites on their center, alluding to gravity magic, and a whole bunch of them could hold the entire Land of Shadow as captive, to keep Messmer locked away for his crime, which could be the previous burning of the Erdtree. Also, holy shit the prisoner's mask having his left eye covered like Mess and Malenia will keep me up at night. And the fact that this emote is someone literally mimicking Miq's rune, using their body as the vertical part was kinda genius. great video!

Messmer strikes me as the son of marika who is eternally loyal to he's mother but took that loyalty to extreme and blasphemous levels But marika still knows that her son is loyal so what if messmer was "sent" to the land of shadow to punish marika's enemies that are trapped their since the land was "set ablaze by messmer's flame"
@garrulousgoldmask

Ooh, that could work! That also gives me some major Rorschach vibes: Messmer isn't locked in there with the Land of Shadow, the land is locked in there with him.

this has nothing to do w your video but i was thinking about elden ring today and had a similarly unhinged idea about the dlc. so in any of the endings where you heal the elden ring and become lord, you aren't ruling with anybody you're just a lord by yourself, and i realised that doesn't really make any sense. godfrey and radagon before you were elden lords, but they weren't actually in charge they were just marika's consorts. an empyrean has always led the golden order, and since you obviously aren't one you have to marry one, and which empyrean is the only one guaranteed to be alive (and willing to rule the order) when you beat the game? miquella, who is conveniently heavily associated with the land of shadow. so my copium for the day is that maybe somehow you end up saving or waking up miquella by beating the dlc, which gives you a new ending to the main game where you rule alongside miquella as a consort. now let's clear something up im not saying i want to marry someone who's stuck in a child's body lmao, i just thought it was a neat theory
