Stuart Strauss remains an enigmatic figure in the world of weird fiction, with scant information available about his life. He is known for a limited body of work, including "The Shadow on The Moor" (1928), "The Soul Tube" (1928), and "The Clenched Hand" (1934). The use of a pseudonym and language suggesting potential unfamiliarity with British culture has led to the assumption that Strauss might be an American author.
"The Shadow on The Moor" is a tale that first appeared in the February 1928 issue of "Weird Tales." Its republication in the 2023 British Library anthology "Circles of Stone: Weird Tales of Pagan Sites and Ancient Rites," edited by Katy Soar, attests to the lasting intrigue and relevance of Strauss's work. The story captures a sense of foreboding in the British countryside, with standing stones taking on a malevolent presence.
Strauss's work, including "The Shadow on The Moor," reflects thematic elements akin to the cosmic horror pioneered by H.P. Lovecraft. Lovecraft's influence is discernible in the eerie atmospheres and otherworldly entities that often pervade Strauss's narratives. Additionally, Strauss, like Lovecraft, explores the theme of ancient cults in remote villages, inhabited by seemingly backward rural characters. The fusion of cosmic horror and folk-horror themes creates an unsettling and atmospheric reading experience.
The thematic exploration of ancient cults in Strauss's work aligns with Margaret Murray's witch-cult hypothesis, a theory that suggests accusations against witches in Europe were rooted in a clandestine pagan religion. Published in Murray's "The Witch-Cult in Western Europe" (1921), the hypothesis posits the existence of a pre-Christian religion centered around a horned god, symbolizing the cycle of seasons and harvests. The horned god's representation on Earth through chosen individuals, ritual sacrifices, and the preservation of this religion through secret covens are central elements of Murray's theory.
Strauss's incorporation of such themes in "The Shadow on The Moor" aligns with the broader cultural fascination with ancient rites and mysterious practices. The narrative, enveloped in cosmic horror and folk-horror, echoes the anxieties of a bygone era, reflecting the convergence of literary imagination and anthropological speculation.

When I was 11-12, my great aunt went into a home and I ended up with her AM radio that was the size of a small shoebox, so it probably had tubes. I had terrible insomnia, but I wasn't allowed to stay up. So, I would get up out of bed in the dark and turn (it had dials) it on so softly that I had to keep my ear to it to hear it. We lived just outside Los Angeles and I would listen to KHJ radio (id jingle: 🎶 Ninth Street KHJ!🎶) with the top 10 of the late sixties in my ear. There were a few close calls, but my parents suspected reading. They never caught me with a book, flashlight, or the light on, so I was relatively safe.

Tony, you're the best, for all the lonely people who wish they had someone to talk/listen to, especially!! No matter if you'd like some company while you're washing dishes, or you are desperate for a little comforting sanity when a nightmare wakes you in the middle of the night, or you just want to escape normal daily worries, bills, health, kids, cars, etc. And I find your literary content far above average, in the first place. I love your ramblings! When you mentioned Ashridge it put me in mind of The Children of The Stones (yes, I am that old) … English village you can’t get out of, stone circle (filmed in Avebury), the old wise man/ village idiot trope, a somewhat Stepford Wives meets Penda’s Fen vibe imo… they don’t make children’s programmes like they did when I was growing up these days, sad to say. Happy day 😉Apropos megaliths, I have both the Modern Antiquarian and the Megalithic European by Julian Cope, fabulous volumes … but weighty! Keep up the good work, Tony, the stories, the info on the authors and the stream of consciousness ramblings… love it all ❤

Tony, this story and your brilliant presentation took my mind to the Chris de Burgh song; "Don't Pay the Ferryman," in the middle an actor is quoting from the Tempest; "Boatswian: I’d strive to tell you. We were dead of sleep. And (how we know not) all clapp’d under hatches; Where, but even now, with strange and several noises. Of roaring, shrieking, howling, jingling chains, And moe diversity of sounds, all horrible. We were awak’d; straightway at liberty; Where we, in all her trim, freshly beheld. Our royal, good, and gallant ship." It's very creepy and effective! Oh Jasper! My love for you runs deep.

Ha-ha! We don't all say "can I get"--Some of us do know that it is more proper to say "may I have"---it is mostly dependent on class or education. Also, geographical region plays an important role in how we say things. Some regions say "Gimme dis or gimme dat" (Give me this or that) or "let me have that there..." There are all kinds of dialects in America and some are very hard to understand even to fellow Americans. Tony, your American accent has come along! You now sound like John Wayne's more thoughtful brother. That is a compliment, I think. Greetings from Montana, and keep on rambling!

I carried on listening to you and was interested that you mention stone circles in Scotland. A friend just moved to a place with a stone circle on the property. Then you mentioned Carnac which is one of my favourite places as I used to live near there. I really dislike the word gotten! Probably because I was taught in primary school that the words get and got are ugly and you should always use have instead. So much of what you say is the way I tend to think. I really like listening to you. Thank you.

That was the point at which I had to stop and google 'do they have moors in the USA'? I got lots of answers regarding the Moors (Moorish people) so had to change it to 'moorlands'. I ❤ your work! This story wasn’t as challenging & I DID want more fay influence too, but then I think that makes this more of an American magazine story. On Ads: 20$ a month to have no YT ads is great for those who can & SHOULD; but for now, I’ve told Google what I prefer so I get kinda focused Ads. Also, I thought you get some money (pennie$ that AD up- pun intended) from the ads(?), but if not that makes me sad because knowing you get something makes me HAPPY! I’m super excited for your new work- especially the fairey tales coming out!!! I can not believe people complain; I really enjoyed when YOU DID DO ACCENTS! I LEARNED A LOT from those shows because you spoke about the history, the land/people connection, & the linguistics surrounding those different accent/dialects- so I’m MAD at those nay-sayers for upsetting some of the fun/learning. Great story again, spend my time listening to them while I paint wargame figures after packing in heavy industry due to heart problems, the author does say fall instead of autumn so wondered if he was American as you later said.

Another masterful reading from the one and only Tony Walker. As always, my thanks. I occasionally leave comments on your RU-vid channel, and I left one after listening to your rendition of Carmilla. Tonight I went back to the comments there, as I wanted to check what I'd written and what I'd only meant to write. Oddly, my comment was gone. I hope it wasn't so long and/or boring that it got deleted. Now I don't know whether that occurred, or if it just fell through the cracks down at the RU-vid abattoir, or -- ? Generally, when I leave a comment, you respond to it. But I know how busy you are (I don't know how you do it) so please understand I'm just curious, not complaining. Please keep up your ramblings, I look forward to them. Your accents, as well. These things are part of what makes your channel the best among those with similar content. Looking forward to your next, as always.

This was such an interesting and eepy-creepy story. Loved it!! It's so interesting to hear you say the British children play in American accents, now-a-days. There's something called "English accents phenomenon" here in the U.S.., whereas American speak predominantly with British accents because of watching mostly British children's television shows. Such as Angelina Ballerina and Pepa Pig, as well as others.

I think you do an American accent very well on a few occasions when I heard you do them. One time you did an excellent American accent but said in your comments that it was in New York accent and I did a double take inside my mind and I did a double take inside my mind because the accent you did gave no hint of attempting to be in New York accent to my ears.

I have several of your books, now waiting for the next ones. Creepy fairies? The Prisoner too? I'm old enough to have seen it on TV the first time around, was it in the late 60's? Btw keep doing your accents, and the "rambles". You'll never please everyone anyway. I had Alistair Cooke ' s book, 'America'. At the end he said something about, "There is no free lunch". The younger me didn't get it; the older me does.

I really enjoy can you talk after the story getting biographical information about the author and when the story was originally published it all related things . sometimes you free associate about related stories and other stories and about writing in general. I enjoy hearing it's quite a bit, it seems a sensible thing to enjoy . But sometimes you continue -- blather on is the phrase you use -- and I usually enjoy listening to that too; the only reason I can think why I enjoy hearing that is there must be something wrong with me .

lol! People just love to moan on about things, don't they---and I mean the 14%, not you and your Ramble. This story was okay, I liked your critique of it and found the "American clues" interesting in your analysis. I was awake the whole time and laughed several times during the blather, my favorite bit. Your book you're writing about the weird house with levels and changing rooms---I have VISITED that house (or its American cousin-house) many times in my dreams!!! It's a freaky place and it must be one of those Universal what-do-ya-callits in the human consciousness/psyche. I'm a very strong Dream Rememberer---since childhood. I always come back from those house dreams feeling like more SPACE has been opened up in my Mind, having paid it one more visit, discovered yet another strange area. My subterraneous dream house once had an entire underground train depot down there, with lots of passengers coming and going, as well as a river near-by! I guess, really---it was a whole city I found, four stories underground. In a dream. See---I like to blather too, must be partly why I'm a Fan. Take care, Tony. 💖🤩

Your other comment shows up for me - right above this one ☝️ I think sometimes the comments are flagged when they have certain words and the AI reviews them to be sure it’s not misinformation or whatever and then if it goes through the review, it posts automatically after that. I’ve noticed it happens with certain comments I’ve posted, too. You’re right - it was probably the mention of the big C 19. I hope you feel better soon!

I'm an American who has spent a good amount of time in Britain and I've 'gotten' my share of Quavers and Whatzits. And I too was a little confused by the description of the stone circle. They most certainly didn't all have half-moon altars and such, although you will find the recumbent and flanker altars in Scotland. He almost got it right by getting it wrong.

A mist' silently pours' over dwendeling stream. Through open feilds, sounds' of merriment' call the spirits to sing. On rising fog, phantoms make way' to the unearthly' fair.
