Always wanted to watch these live shows in the 1970s but never had the money ( only ever managed to see two 1950s/60s groups ) and now, I have the money but, most of these super Artists are no more.
Mary Weiss what the bomb back in those days. Saw her when I was 14 at the Murray The K show back in Brooklyn in the 60's. Slept outside the night before waiting to get in. Great Days.
Looking at all the clips of Mary's passing...I checked Wikipedia and found out that Mary and I were born the Same month , same Day , Same Year...she was older by 3 hours...I was born in Los Angeles... :)
Mary had my exact birthday, month day and year. She died on January 19, my sister Elizabeth's ( Libby) birthday. Talk about coincidence! Born same day. Sisters with the same name.. and she died on that sister's birthday. What are the odds?
Mary Weiss lead singer of the Shangri-La’s passed away at 75 they had a number of hits, not the biggest group for that era. They sang this song remember and a few others. She continue to sing as long as she had an audience up until her 60s or 70s. Just a reminder of another piece of our rock ‘n’ roll history is gone.
I just resently became a shangri-las addict. for anyone out there that dos'nt have one of there albums you can get a cd called"the shangri-las myrmidons of melodrama" it is fantastic. if it was a recored i whould have woren it out all ready. anyone out there who has it please coment. shangri-las forever!
Because it was a terrible cover. I saw this while trying to find the original version(the only real version that is worth listening to) by the isley brothers. I'm sorry, but this is meant for soul singers.
It can also be found on the 4 cd Box set called THE RED BIRD STORY, which has every recording on the RED BIRD record label, which existed from 1963 to 1966. The Shangri-Las, the Dixie Cups, the Jelly Beans and others recorded their records on this label.
@john wesson A definition of the word nirvana • "a state of perfect happiness; an ideal or idyllic place". Also, I hate grunge rock and I think Kurt Cobain was WAY OVERRATED.
Did the Shangri-Las ever perform at the Dexter Lake Club? Can't jog my memory, oh well..Otis Day and the Knights were the house band there back in the day and they did a rousing rendition of this classic tune.Regardless,in this clip Mary does the song justice and is definitely soft on the eyes.
Agreed! It's not one - vs - another. I defended Lulu's 1964 'Ready, Steady, Go!' performance because she is truly phenomenal in that version, simply fantastic. Nothing against the Shangri-Las' take on it! Both performances are remakes of the original Isley Brothers' song, released five years earlier in 1959.
Definitely Betty singing here even though she is not on stage. Betty also sang "Wishing Well" and "Maybe". These girls had a lot of talent and sounded great! After listening to the 2011 Grammy Awards show........hmmmm........I know the times have changed but these girls would be the top performers of the show. Listen to the body of their music and decide for yourself.
Damn!this was their original??? I've got hooked up on this for years but never thought that they sang this song, that they own it!! Great to know that!! Mary weiss was so pretty and charming as well as the twins,I wonder why her sister never stayed with the group ,history tells that there used to be 4 of them
i just had mcdicks for supper tonight and seeing the young girls working the tills there i thought to myself " these girl are the same age the shangs where back then" . it must have been amazing to see them in concert. they were so young but so great.some one out there who has been there please tell me about it . sine me ( born to late)
the strange thing about the Shangri-las is that some of their recordings that bombed should have zoomed up the charts and vice versa. I have all 86 shindig episodes on dvd and so far have only had the time to watch 5.
claus petersen There are another two surviving performances of The Shangri-Las performing 'Shout'. This particular one also survives in good quality without the time stamp.
They got that metro NY city sound yeah I know there from Jersey but North NJ is part of greater NY I love that NY accent maybe because I got it too from the Bronx great sound!!!1
