"Karn can go everywhere, but doesn't really have a home anywhere" is indeed a heartbreaking bit of accidental gameplay-story integration. Great work commemorating a happy moment of recent Magic history.

I think one of the most important things that made this format good was the fact that it wasn't designed with clear, focused two-color archetypes but rather with mono-color archetypes that then led into combination two-color archetypes.

I attended one of those Vonnegut lectures in the 90’s at UMass. It was very cool but tbh he opened with a bit about how there weren’t 4 seasons but 6 adding the opening and closing of summer. He remarked it would be the only think we would really remember about the lecture. Personally speaking, he was right.

The more exposure to various art mediums I get, the more I realize how special Magic is for it's unique ability to combine fantasy storytelling across an unlimited number of world environments with a deeply nuanced game that is also a card game to be played in real life with friends. It's a social game with things to cater to both story driven, lore seeking individuals, and cold, calculating, performance driven folks. I'm simplifying this somewhat, but my point is that I don't believe there are many other topics out there that suit themselves to the format of a video essay than Magic The Gathering. When I say Sam makes some of my favourite RU-vid videos to watch, I really mean it; quality, well made, thought provoking video essays about one of my favourite games.
@LinkEX

@@iqcool Seconded. Also, I'd argue Rhystic Studies just makes superb essays, period. But his knack for integrating the many unique aspects Magic has makes you realize and appreciate just how much there is to this game. I'm glad it's getting more mainstream appeal as time goes on, because it it's so much more than a "silly card game for nerds".

@@iqcool Totally agree. That's the reason why i am still invested into this game 23 years after I first picked it up. Dominaria United is second only to Neon Dynasty for me as the best overall MTG Arena format. The set supported everything I like about modern limited design: color splashes with ambitious mana-bases, synergistic and grindy value-oriented gameplay, the necessary presence of strong aggressive options, and powerful commons that reward specific deckbuilding choices (Tolarian Terror, Writhing Necromass, etc.) The only real stain on the format's reputation was of course, the undeniable powerhouse Wingmantle Chaplain, which occupies the coveted mythic uncommon slot.

Now this is certainly a different way to look at magic. Taking a literary analysis approach to analyzing magic draft data is a unique yet effective way to review and retrospect on sets of the past. I kee forgetting DMU was a set due to set burnout, but there are a lot of good cards for commander and other formats. Same with Brother's War. Great video as always, Sam! This definitely was an interesting perspective.

With Wizards printing cards so often, it feels that these worlds that they have created don’t get enough time to be explored. That’s why I appreciate these closer looks from Sam. It breathes new life and a fresh take on worlds/art in the game we love. It takes what’s old, and possibly forgotten, and makes it feel new and exciting.

I know people lament tapped lands especially in edh and precons, but when used smartly like in DMU they add so much to the limited experience. Slowing down the turn pacing slightly, but a trade off of wider options and flexibility, balances out the gameplay experience in a hugely meaningful ways including pushing the importance of decision making while not pushing the format into a deterministic quagmire.
@Reach_W
@Reach_W 7 месяцев назад
Totally on board with Ben Werne there. DMU was looking like one of the GOATs from the outset and it followed through at every stage of its development. Not to undersell the gameplay, but what really did it for me was the draft portion. In the running for draft formats which reward most the values of staying flexible and reading the draft well. I've long joked about wanting to skip playing games and just draft again after building the deck, and with DMU it wasn't a joke.

I'm curious if the kicker effects on these cards could serve as "win more" effects, so in games where you're ahead, they put you further ahead and seal the victory, but in games where you're behind, the kicker cost is usually inaccessible because you're playing catch-up. Could this help explain the huge difference in win rate when kicker costs are paid vs. not paid?

DMU is what inspired me to make an Invasion-Block cube. Drafting this slightly shaggy and decision heavy format where your opponent could surprise you (or you them) with an odd splash felt like such a unique and refreshing experience compared to the lean, fast two color formats of modern magic. I find the intricacies of drafting to just be overwhelming, however I love learning the stats behind things. I think part of what made DMU so fun was that there were multiple viable options when it came to playing. . .and for those of us not super informed for the nuances of a draft (or even release) it was easier to pick up and build something that might actually work while still being able to splash into third even fourth colors for cards that looked fun to use and would not normally be viable.

I end up going 2 color in most drafts except SNC and my third draft play of LTR-I was passed a Tom Bombadil and went five color lol. I haven't played DMU even though it was the main set when I first started playing Magic but this made me really want to dig into it and play with my friends.

The point about Dominaria United coming after two disliked sets I think rings true. It felt good to see the set after the nonesense that was Capenna.

Absolutely loved the video and glad to see sierko on your channel. So cool! Bummed that people are gonna start buying up loose DMU boxes. I've enjoyed drafting it for $85 these last many months.

The 5/5 discounting cycle were such standouts for the set. They felt *so* good to play, and they had decent cohesion when put together sans Terror.

I gave up on playing Magic recently simply due to choices of the company itself over the last few years, but I will always come back for videos like this
