Fantastic, thorough review! I only read Shards of Earth so far. Good, not great. I'll likely continue with the series sometime in 2024.

Donaldson's Gap Cycle is a great space opera. My favorite. Might be the best.

I'll have to check it out, I haven't read it yet. I read the Chronicles of Thomas Covenant back in the day, but greatly struggled with Thomas Covenant, I just couldn't warm up to that character, but I enjoyed the writing and the story line.

Yes I really enjoy that one too. Although it gets a bit rough at times. I read it back when it was published and had to wait for each book to be released. It was a bit agonizing but nothing compared to what Morn had to go through.

Read this one but didn’t finish the series. Not sure if Tchaikovsky is for me with the exception of The Children of Time. Read at least one sequel with octopuses or octopi? in a spaceship and it didn’t really connect. I do admire his ideas and broad scope of the universe. Think I’m going to try Reynolds instead.

Hmm, I'll give the sequels a go and hopefully I'll get on with it a little better than you did. I've been meaning to read Children of Time, so many books so little time.

I just finished Surface Detail by Banks and really enjoyed it. Banks could really write well. RIP.

I liked this series. The first book gave me a Becky Chambers vibe. The second book had great pacing and action. The third book highlights a great character and gives me a “It’s all about family” vibe.

Nice, good to hear the sequels don't let it down. I'm looking forward to reading them.

I liked it. It was a bit confusing at times tho but got easier the more you read. Dune influence is there for sure. Unspace was a great idea and probably the most interesting aspect of the whole world-building. It was a bit terrifying. Got the second book right away but at the same time got the first Mistborn novel and after I was done got the other two so haven’t been able to get to it yet unfortunately… and also got the first book of Stormlight Archives smh 🤦‍♂️

I've recently finished a review of the Eyes of the Void, please keep an eye out for it.

Okay, noted. I really enjoyed the first two children of time books but was a bit let down by the last one. I got a hoot out of your "subtle bombs" description. Philip k Dick is the master of these. Everything can turn on a word or two and you have to read very carefully or you'll completely miss them.
