Since this movie took place in the 40s during this scene, $10 in mid 1940s money is nearly $150 today. I don’t know if this is a goof, or if they just priced it at that for the sake of simplicity, but there’s no way in hell a rock hammer would cost $150
@Dibab Everything you just said is irrelevant, since Andy clearly said the item costs 7$ in any gem shop. So the high price has nothing to do with the fact that they're in prison. The prison factor only accounts for the extra 3$.
I was thinking the same thing when I clicked on the thumbnail to watch it. This, Tombstone, Oceans Eleven, and a few others. They aren't the BEST movies, but if they are on as I school by the channels, I know what I will be doing for the next couple of hours.
It's a stupid movie . As if Andy was kept in one cell for 20 years and not once in that 20 years did any guard remove that poster hiding the tunnel he was digging for 20 years.
@@DekuStickGamer Yeah, Heywood’s probably one of the funnier characters, but he doesn’t get mentioned that much. It’s a shame we never get to see him or any of Red’s other friends get released.
I feel for Andy. Everybody thinks he’s cold, including the judge who threw the book at him. Even his wife thought he was a cold fish. This is a severe case of being misunderstood, the man was just introspective.
Totally agree. Tim Robbins did an excellent job bringing out this quality in Andy. He conveys so much with just his eyes alone. Every scene he is in, he captures my fullest attention.
Yeah, I relate to this so much. People always assume and ask questions like "Why are you mad?" and "Do you hate me?". No, i'm not and i don't. I just see no reason to smile all the time.
@@IssyFishyy The “why are you mad” shit happens to me all the fucking time, even when I was a pre-teen. I’ve never truly related to a fictional character until I saw Shawshank.
@@IssyFishyy En tant que français lorsque j'étais en Angleterre, les anglais pensaient de moi que j'étais un sale con antipathique, simplement parce que nous français, nous ne sourions pas stupidement en permanence comme les anglo-saxons !
+BxGirlRN Blazin' Completely agree with you, Have you seen the shawshank redmption film look, so many things we don't know in a filmmakers point of view.
I love how in the very beginning they set up him planning his escape. But then discreetly cover it up with other plot lines and stories. Like you know he’s thinking about it. But the writing makes you quickly forget about it. At least for me. That’s why when they finally reveal his escape. It almost comes off as shocking
@@MrParkerman6 ummmmm does your mommy know you watched a rated r movie? Also do you really think he would ask for a hammer just for kicks and giggles? He was testing the wall by carving his name, but he always planned on digging a tunnel there. The fact that never occured to you, plus the fact you called me a dumb ass for pointing out something that didnt make any sense, proves your just a little preteen who just learned about youtube
@@ethanharmer5151 While I do agree that guy was overly aggressive for absolutely no reason. I have to say that no, he didn’t have the idea of digging a hole in the beginning. He doesn’t get the idea until that piece of the wall falls off. That’s why he stares at it weirdly and touches the wall with his finger. He just then realized that the wall was weak.
freakyfornash yep technically speaking anything can be made into a weapon, only a hammer can be used as is. Once the toothbrush looks like a shank, it is no longer a toothbrush.
Stevie Ray C red was a robbing killing thug who went to prison (without a library) at age 18. It's hard for me to believe he knows the names of the rocks on the ground
The character Mandy the assassin from 24 is a lesbian in Season 1 but later dates a bisexual man a few seasons later. She never feels love for her partners; the only thing she believes in is her murderous agenda. She, like Boggs, doesn't constitute a human.
Fun fact: In April 2018, while a guest on NPR's "It's Been a Minute with Sam Sanders," Tim Robbins talked about how often strangers tell him they love this movie: "I'm proud of that film, really proud of that film....I've talked to Morgan about this. It's a pretty special...it's unlike other films that people talk to you about. It's very important to people, in a deep way. And it's beyond just liking the film. It's more profound than that. I've had people tell me that it's shifted the way they think, that it brought them out of a depression, that it made them understand a deeper truth about themselves.
True, but at the same time, Andy wasn't thinking of escaping when he asked for the rock hammer. He only thought about it after he'd seen how the walls were crumbling while etching something into it.
In the original book, Red is an Irish character. Movie casted Morgan Freeman who is black to be Red but still gave a little tribute to Stephen King's original book.
What I couldn’t understand is why this movie bombed at theaters. It’s a great movie. From my perspective, it’s one of those movies I can watch a hundred times and never get tired of it. Great acting from Tim Robbins and Morgan Freeman
For anyone that cares after reading the comment: the movie came out the same year as: Lion King, Forest Gump, Speed, Pulp Fiction, Interview with a vampire
This is honestly one of the greatest films of all time imo. The acting, the dialogue, the cinematography, the music just everything about this film is brilliant. I’m stunned that this movie lost the Oscar to Forest Gump (I love Forest Gump also and think it is also one of the greatest movies of all time but I think Shawshank is levels above it) a true masterpiece.
0:45 Red: “you want me to get you a rock hammer? What is it?” Andy: “what do you care?” Red: “Because you asked me to get it for you? How am I supposed to get it unless you tell me what it is!?”
"What do you care?" Uhhh you wanna reconsider your tone when asking me for a favor? Especially since I'm probably the only guy around here who can get you this hammer?
He needed 2 Rock Hammers & 19 years to tunnel through the wall. Apparently some real life convicts did tunnel through the wall, they were recaptured shortly afterwards
After "Red" answered "Maybe it's because I'm Irish" he smirked as he looked back at Andy walking away. Red as narrator then said it was safe to say he liked Andy.
"I could see why some of the boys took him for snobby. He had a quiet way about him. A walk and a talk that just wasn't normal around here. He strolled... like a man in a park without a care or worry in the world. Like he had on an invisible coat that would shield him from this place. Yeah... I think it would be fair to say... I liked Andy from the start."
"Then I gues, you wanna escape. A tunnel under the wall maybe." "You'll understand, when you see the rock hammer." ... I'm always asking myself, if Andy had that plan the entire time or if it popped up in his mind. I mean, I saw the movie. But maybe the exchange with Red brought him to the idea of escaping, when that part of the wall fell down?
Mandy Fleischer The book is (through Stephen King) written as Red's memoir of his time in Shawshank with Andy; as such, he doesn't know exactly when Andy decided he'd try to escape, but he guesses it wasn't until Andy asked for the poster of Rita Hayworth
Mandy Fleischer in the film they show him scratching on the wall to pass the time and a chunk falls off. This is when he gets the idea to build a tunnel so he asks red for a poster to cover his work
This movie is fucking genius.. Greatest of all time... Every line has deep meaning.. Every event is so powerful.. Mszs are simply life changing... Whenever i feel tense.. I just remember... Hope is the best thing... And get busy living or get busy dying... Everything just improves.
@@MrParkerman6 Morgan Freeman was Irish in the movie? Maybe make sure you're not saying really really incredibly stupid shit before calling someone else dumbass
@@rayanhadid1269 yeah the original story comes from a collection of Stephen King short stories, the movie "stand by me" was also based on a story from the same collection
@@bryanmurphy1107 Being black and being of Irish descent are not mutually exclusive. You’ve never heard of a mixed-race couple? And given that several of the Southern states were settled by Scottish and Irish immigrants, that pairing is not an unreasonable possibility (and before anyone comments, yes, I do know the story takes place in Maine; people can move between states, as many former slaves did looking for work after the Civil War - the explanation that Red may have been progeny from one of these gives you backstory for the name).
"Toothbrush is not a lethal object." True, but if the plastic handle is hard enough, that is one of the most common items a prisoner will turn into a shiv.
I read the novel from Different Seasons (King's best book) in high school early 90s , and remember watching the vhs in 1994-95. After the credits, I thought it was a really but really respectable movie! Still is and will probably always be. Heck, it's a classic!
Andy " i need pencil ✏️ " Red : "no way i could get u a lethalobject" Andy:- " wait pencil is lethal ?? " Red :- " I've seen a guy killed 3 men in a bar with a pencil. With a fooking pencil "
TownsendV228 My guess is Edd360's referring to the fact that Morgan Freeman is throwing the ball back and forth and scenes frequently require multiple takes in a day, etc. At least, that's what I took from it.
What I don't understand is whether he ordered the hammer from Red with the intention to shape rocks or to escape. The carving his name with the rock hammer scene seems to indicate that the thought of tunnelling through the wall only came to him when the bit of the wall crumbled away.
That's probably what happened. He wasn't planning to escape originally, just use it for the rocks and stuff. Then when he saw the wall was loose, he asked for the poster to cover up what he was doing.
It's one of these things that it's subtle in the film, but the book explains more clearly. Andy had only his hobby in mind when he approached Red to commission the hammer. It wasn't until a couple of years later that he really made a plan to escape, and that's when he went to Red again to buy the Rita Hayworth's poster, and he looked really anxious. In the book Red explains to the reader that he misinterpreted Andy's uneasiness thinking that Andy was worrying that by buying a hot girl poster like most inmates do he'd lose his 'cold fish' reputation. In reality, Andy's anxiety had nothing to do with that; he was anxious because he had just realized that he had a chance to escape Shawshank.
Red had TWO "first Impressions" of Andy.......the first was when he was taking Bet's on which New Fish would crack during the first night. Red was NOT happy with The Tall Drink Of Water as he stated when he revealed Andy cost him Two packs of smokes......and of course the second "impression" was here in this scene! Wonderful movie!
Andy: We only had one conversation but I can tell we are going to be life long friends, and since you black and I’m white that makes it more special for the audience! (Looks at the camera slowly) Peter griffin
