Hi and welcome to episode 19 of the Shed of Dreams ES 335 guitar build series.
Having cut the binding channels last time in this episode I tackle one of the last jobs on the body build by fitting the binding.
I hope you enjoy the video, if so please consider subscribing using the link below.

That worked out truly well, you have converted me from the way I was going to bind my guitars to this way.

Thanks John, I will be doing it this way from now on.

Great binding job. You convinced me to do the acetone method on the next binding job.

Thanks Fred, I think I'll will be doing it this way going forward. Much cleaner and I think it's made a better job of it.

Acetone isn't just for getting high then? Who'd of thunk it! A great job there Patrick. Very professional results.

Great binding job. Had to smile at the reference to superglue sticking the tape to the top (thought it was just me!) Assume you got the acetone from somewhere like Superdrug as nail polish remover? Best scratch-build guitar on youtube, loving this series.

Thanks paul, that's very kind of you. I actually got the acetone from ebay, it was very cheap that way. I've done a lot of composite work inthe past so usually have some acetone on hand.

Hi Patrick I think the router bit you used wasn’t a true binding cutter this is why you didn’t achieve a clean cut on the bottom. The binding cutter has a cutting edge on the bottom as well. I have experienced the same problem with the bearing marking the body so I now run some thin masking tape around the body to help protect it.

@Adventuresfromtheshedofdreams 2 года назад
Thanks William, no not a binding cutter but a standard pattern bit, it didn't do a bad job just left a slight burr that needed a a spot of cleaning up. I just look at the price of the binding bit sets and shudder, I will need to get one eventually but this is ok for now. Great tip with the masking tape :)

Great work. I'm (pleasantly) surprised that the tape was enough to pull the binding tight into the concave areas. (Not that I've ever bound a guitar, so how would I know lol). But it worked a treat, looks fab. 👍

It's surprising how much clamping pressure you can apply with masking tape, even more if you use two or three layers ;)

Looks great! The thing I like about acetone is you can tape all the binding down with gaps between the tape. Then squirt acetone in the joints. It wicks in like ca. Once that is set and you pull the tape you can squirt acetone into the rest of it. That process goes really quick. Of course you might find a place that’s gapped a little. Just acetone and tape that spot.

Cheers dane, that sounds like a great technique, I need to build another body to bind now :)

Amazing just amazing i am not into guitars but i been introduced to this series by chance and been intently following each episode and its turning out great. Massive thanks for going to the effort of making these videos as that initself is a job also alongside the actual making of the guitar.

I’ve only put binding on about 6 builds, but acetone works great for me! I ended up wicking it between the binding and the body with a thin tip on my applicator, but with similar results to yours. The 335 is coming along really well!

Interesting video. Would love a good 335 styled guitar myself. Many good options these days. Why do *NO* manufacturers build semi hollow guitars with the volume/tone pot area routed out in the back for ease of service to the 3-way toggle &/or volume/tone pots? Am I supposed to believe *NO* one *CAN* devise a method by which a control cavity route can be made & placed on a modern-day laminated guitar? No, IMHWO, I do not buy it & will not buy one as long as this item is continued to be overlooked in the build of modern 335-style guitars. It's a nightmare oversight that has been woefully neglected for decades.
@Adventuresfromtheshedofdreams
I think the problem with adding a control cut to the top or back of a semi hollow is that it would effect the resonance of the guitar. I think the closest you will get is a thinline tele type guitar. Personally, I don't mind fishing controls in through f holes. I love a challenge :)

that was spell"binding" lol. acetone is the only way to go. easier to work with than ca and not nearly as messy. patrick, on the sg you built what are the neck widths at the nut and the neck pocket?
@Adventuresfromtheshedofdreams
@Adventuresfromtheshedofdreams 2 года назад
lol, I enjoyed using the acetone much better. I can't remember the SG specs off the top of my head, I'll take some measurements and get back to you.

I was at work today and a geezer called Mark M asked me if I happened to know Pat from London Road, 'cos he's building a 335. What a coincidence, I thought. You don't happen to wear a green staff lanyard at work do you Pat? I thought you sounded fairly local to me, but this would be a lot closer to home than I expected....

I have heard of luthiers using shellac to fit binding, I don't if that's effective!
@Adventuresfromtheshedofdreams

I've never seen that, suppose it depends on the binding.

I'm not planning to do so on this build, it wouldn't work with the finish I have in mind. I do however want to do bound F holes on an upcoming build ;)
