I must agree. I listen to mostly symphonic/melodic black and death metal, but I have had many friends of the indie persuasion. Not one of them ever mentioned The Shins. The former and latter of what I just said before spans 25 years, I'm 37. The first time I heard The Shins was in a fairly old school Thrasher skateboarding video. I forgot about it. I think I heard one of their newer (but now older) songs "New Slang" via the show Scrubs. I'm not much into indie, but this band was obviously something special. I heard a much more recent song the other day... no, not for me at all, but their old songs are very good.
This came out after my graduation the last summer of adolescents. God to be this young, this nostalgic pain wells up in the depths of my being. Timeless ❤
I think I'll go home and mull this over Before I cram it down my throat At long last it's crashed, its colossal mass Has broken up into bits in my moat Lift the mattress off the floor Walk the cramps off Go meander in the cold Hail to your dark skin Hiding the fact you're dead again Underneath the power lines seeking shade Far above our heads are the icy heights that contain all reason It's a luscious mix of words and tricks That let us bet when you know we should fold On rocks I dreamt of where we'd stepped And of the whole mess of roads we're now on Hold your glass up, hold it in Never betray the way you've always known it is One day I'll be wondering how I got so old just wondering how Never got cold wearing nothing in the snow This is way beyond my remote concern Of being condescending All these squawking birds won't quit Building nothing, laying bricks Hold your glass up, hold it in Never betray the way you've always known it is One day I'll be wondering how I got so old just wondering how Never got cold wearing nothing in the snow This is way beyond my remote concern Of being condescending All these squawking birds won't quit Building nothing, laying bricks
i saw them in concert opening for B&S once and was stunned at how perfect his vocals were live.. like absolute pitch perfect.. this is much rawer and rougher… not sure if it’s intentional or his voice degraded or a monitoring issue..
I'm genuinely a big fan of them but somehow I don't like James Mercer's singing in all these KEXP clips... other clips on RU-vid e.g. 'A comet appears' blew me away but I really don't like how he sounds here :(
