On Thursday, July 28, 2022, we met with Avi Applestein, who spoke about the lives of his parents, that both survived the Holocaust, and discussed how their experiences affected him too.
Avi’s parents grew up in Poland. They were born before the war began. In 1942, the Nazis deported 16-year-old Reuven from Olkusz and 14-year-old Miriam from Suchedniow near Kielce to concentration camps. By the end of the war, each of them had survived six camps - including Auschwitz-Birkenau, Bergen-Belsen, and Dachau - and a death march. Reuven and Miriam’s entire immediate families and almost all the members of their extended families were murdered in the Holocaust. Reuven and Miriam met each other in a Displaced Persons camp and emigrated to Israel in 1948.
Both coped with the horror of Nazi persecution in different ways. And their children also dealt with their parents’ trauma in their own unique way.
Due to technical issues, this event will be continued at a later date. Feel free to watch Part I of our Talk with Avi and follow us for news on Part II!

Thank you for this presentation, which is sad and touching. For example the sad expression in your grandfather`s face. And how many of your relatives` lives were destroyed and taken. The humiliation, torturing and killing of so many people. The incredible strange smiles of the people who did that. At the beginning, you say: "People close themselves to this, especially Germans". But "Germans" are different people, and I am sure that we should never generalize as far as nations, gender etc. are concerned - there are tendencies, but not all members of big groups were or are the same. "The Germans", "the Russians", "the Ukrainians", "the Germans", "the Jews"... are individuals.
