Being overweight and overloaded was such a big kerffufle in my industry. We're moving away from Dual Cabs to light trucks for this very reason. We've done the GVM upgrade but honestly it's a bandaid to the solution.

@@harrywalker968 it's pretty rough riding in the Hilux and LC with GVM upgrade unladen. But that's rare,only ever happen when they're new and haven't been fitted with tool boxes and racks. We generally have them loaded up quite a fair bit and they ride better then. I'm personally going away from my LC and into a van for work. Can still do what the LC can do but far more comfortable and not getting annoyed by wet equipments.

Awesome message to preach, the amount of people I see driving around with their FAMILIES in a vehicle that is grossly over GCM and GVM is just ridiculous people need more education on this.

You didn’t make any mention of maximum weights over the axles. Not only can you not exceed the GVM, but you can not exceed maximum weights over each axle. Your test put all the weight in the tray. I dare say, you would have exceeded the rear axle weights and therefore, were illegal.

On the OEM vehicle the rear axle capacity would have been exceeded with the caravan on the back. With the upgraded vehicle the rear axle capacity wasn't exceeded. This is due to the fact that the GVM upgrade also includes axle capacity upgrades. The correctly matched spring also transfers more weight to the front wheels. The rake of the vehicle makes a significant difference. Also the wheelbase on the ranger does put the mass decent way forward.

The GVM upgrade for this vehicle gives an extra 570kg payload. It only gives an additional 200kg to the front axle, and 250kg to the rear axle. Axle weights are where people will come undone first, even with a GVM upgrade.

Exactly what I thought. When I saw the 4 corner balance/scale I was so much hoping to see the effect when you load the rear how much the front got unloaded/gets lighter. Even if the 120kg bullbar and winch are mounted up front and not on the bed. Please take this in consideration and do a perfect new test. That we all love to see. Greetings from Germany.

Depends on which upgrade. I based it off the most expensive upgrade which gave you an extra 250kg. Still not much and most will be well over that as well when towing and mildly modified

Cost. Modding 4wds seems popular becuase you see it condensed on youtube but most sold outside of the city will be stock till theyre in the scrapyard.

Because as soon as you start modifieding them the warranty is over. There made shit from the start so they don't last so that you have to keep spending more on them or replace every few years

Because ford has the F150, F250, F350 etc and will be competing with its self at least in NA markets if it starts releasing the Ranger with increased capacity. The factory would rather you buy the bigger truck.

They do most American truck manufacturers offer towing package upgrades can’t say the same to Australia and Europe but here the reason trucks have limits it because they are already so large and most times the weights are set in stone because they physically can’t build a truck with more capacity because it would require a much more expensive license for example in my province in Canada a 3/4 ton pick up so a f250 ram 2500 or Chevy can tow roughly 20000 pounds or 10000kg ish give or take conversions but you are not allowed to tow that without a upgraded license due to the fact that a load like that is waaaaaay different to a smaller trailer and load. End of the day the reason is peoples want comfort over usability these days meaning they keep adding more weight to trucks that already were designed to have a set capacity and they loose more and more capacity every year

In NZ, for licensing purposes, the GCM is defined as a combo of the manufacturer spec for the max vehicle GVM + Max trailer GVM. Not the combination of actual weights. I wonder if the GCM definition in any Aussie states is based on max manufacturer specs rather than actual weights?

In NZ legislation GLW is also defined as max spec rather than actual weight. In fact, GLW is used in place of GVM as different types of vehicles use different terminology for the max specified weights.

Tradesman are a real problem, adding a full rear canopy then filling it up with tools and work goods, with head lights pointing straight in the eyes of incoming traffic. Really dangerous in so many ways.

Definitely not the case. I worked this out once before. By a new Y61 GU seven seater Patrol and the payload allowed for 7 people's is 88kg per seat (seven seater). I'm yet to fuel it up (120 lts) & carry items. The Patrol payload was way under par. The Y62 addressed this issue. That's why when buying a Y61 I had a Pedders SSM GVM upgrade. The plus, the vehicle actually rode better than standard without occupants not harsh as I expected. With occupant's it was amazing good, all commented how well it rode, even on rough roads. Wrong vehicle? I think not. Manufacturers didn't really give real world payloads in some designs like 7 seats at 88kg max. per seat for a passenger vehicle.

Toyota Land Cruiser UZJ-100R - GNANKQ May/2004 Engine model: 2UZ-FE, 4.7L v8 cylinder petrol-engine The front axle load for the UZJ-100R is 1550 kg. The rear axle load is 1950 kg. The total axle load capacity (sum of front and rear) amounts to 3500 kg GVM is 3260 kg. GCM is 6680 kg. The kerb mass (also known as curb weight) of the 2004 Toyota Land Cruiser UZJ-100R is approximately 2413 kg. The estimated kerb weight of the rear axle of the 2004 Toyota Land Cruiser UZJ-100R is approximately 783 kg. Braked Towing Capacity is 3500 kg. Unbraked Towing Capacity is 750 kg. Total Vehicle Payload is 811 kg. They've been doing this for over 20 years. Nice vid mate, thank you for the presentation. How about testing something that can do the job straight out of the box?

Totally get it mate, but that's the thing - a lot of people aren't looking for one straight out the box and are looking for a way to increase their GVM post-purchase. Not everyone things of it right off the bat!

not to mention the fact that all the weight you put in the tub for testing, is nicely located centered and low, not messing too much the center of mass. Real life rigs have heavy gear all over the place, even worse handling as a result

Upgraded brakes and suspension as shown offer an increase in drive ability but the plate on the vehicle still remains the same GVM unless Pedders offer a certificate and replate the vehicle as now having an increased GVM of X to satisfy any vehicle inspection authority

Pedders do offer the cert and modulate alongside all the required engineering documents for any state or territory in Australia (pre rego or post rego). Also for certain vehicles it's all offered in NZ too

Excellent work. Some of the things you see on the roads are just unsafe at any speed. Two other points: 1. Axle load limits also have to be considered. 2. If the GCM is 4.5 tonnes or more, the speed limit is 100km/h in some states, just like trucks, even if the signposted limit is 110.

A very interesting video. In South Africa I am sure we have the same problem, just don't think it is being checked. I might be wrong, by I have not heard about a GVM upgrade here, although we technically do it when we upgrade the suspension, but there is nothing official about increasing the GVM.

This is why I bought a 2010 collie / dmax. Had the weight checked, after all touring / 4wd mods were done, still have 500kg to gvm with the wife and 2 kids in the car. And can put a 3t van behind it and still have 200kg to both my gvm / gcm

Some do include chassis bracing, axle modifications and brake upgrades. They are not cheap GVM upgrades though.

You can’t drive out of the car yard without a licence, you shouldn’t be able to tow a new van off the lot if your vehicle isn’t up to it. I see overloaded vehicles on the highway everyday. It’s a shame more won’t see this video and know how dangerous they are on the road

The yanks are more pessimistic, an F150 is known as a half ton truck. I think its a military rating, what the army rate it at. These might be a 1/4 ton rated.

B/c those are adequate for standard use, and anything stiffer would be regarded as uncomfortable to the average buyer and probably be more expensive.

yea i like the extra cabs. you get rear seats if you get real stuck and need them otherwise its bigger tray, bigger cab(over single) so you can put more inside like a fridge behind the seats, more payload... they are just the perfect balance for an all rounder. certainly nice being able to put 2 quads on the ute and still have the sides up and room for more gear.

What I don’t understand about a gvm up grade is the price 3500$ for a stamp for 2k I have 500kgs springs front and rear on 2inch lift my Ute weighs in at 3ton most of the time snd 3.5 tones when I am touring with the money left over I can buy airbags which are proven to reduce load on the chassis and improve ride I still believe gvm upgrades are a bullshit this test showed the difference between stock and 2inch 500kgs springs

On my 2012 Colorado rego papers it states that the TARE weight is 1964kg and the GVM is 3100kg however the GCM is blank. How do I find out what the GCM is?

Owners manual if you have one, or the GVM + maximum towing weight. 3100KG GVM + plus maximum towable weight, 2500-3000KG? = 5600-6100 GCM?

@@JSH083 That sounds about right, 6000kg. The towing capacity is 3.5t (Braked) and I’m under the GVM, my boat is nowhere near 3.5t so all should be good to go.

It pains me to see what people tow with half ton trucks. According to Ford my half ton truck is rated to tow 9.5k (which I think is kinda nuts for a half ton) with just me in it of course, but I've got a topper, wife and 2 kids to haul too. Most people don't think about that. When shopping for a TT we decided before we even went to the dealer that our limit was 5k gross and we wanted a generous payload capacity (I saw as low as 400lbs on a 5k gross trailer - I consider that to be an engineering failure) I will admit I never have actually weighed my setup, but visually it doesn't look scary unlike half the trailers I see being towed.

Great video guys, what set up would you recommend for a variable load such as adding and removing a liftoff canopy ? I'd be worried that an upgrade like this wouldn't handle too well when unladen.

Depending on what sort of weight difference you're talking about with your canopy. This is where a set of parabolic springs are useful. Unfortunately all suspension is a compromise

Did anyone else see the rust on the chassis thats new vehicles for you today. Made not to last. I had a new vehicle the next day seen all the rust in 3 months there was so much it failed a road worthy.

Yep. I rustproof 4wd's weekly. Most now ones have surface rust. NP300s and D-Maxs are the worst. FYI the new Chevrolet trucks don't even have a painted chassis. Just factory rustproof over the bare steel.

Easy way to fix the problem is to stop buying those tiny pickups. Buy a full sized pickup like the Ram 2500 or Chevy 2500.

Those are crap offroad due to weight, ground clearance and cost, watch mats offroad recovery if you need proof of how easy they are to get stuck. Utes over here have the same payload as an american f150 but theyre much better offroad due to size and weight, people just expect them to do more than theyre made for.

Honestly if i was ever going to tow a caravan id just steer away from anything in the 'car' class at all. Cheaper and better equipped small trucks out there that are made to do the job without putting others at risk. No matter what upgrades you do its still just 4 small tyres trying to stop a 3-6 tonne brick.

better is if you tow a caravan from 3.5t that you have nothing in the car than only the ppl in the car ( ofcours a gvm ugrade in the car) this ll" save alot off problems plus you have over for weight in the car why you ll" put gear in the car when you have ervery thing in the caravan
