In the sequel, Shredder needed a new helmet made quickly and probably only had materials laying around the junkyard to make one with.

one thing to note and I was hoping you'd point it out, in Secrets of the Ooze they are confined to the salvage yard and did not have their same connections and resources so they had to basically MacGyver his helmet together which is totally reflected in his design which I kind of liked. The 1990 film is by far and away 100 times superior but I did like that aspect of Ooze for his design.

TMNT 2 was good in my opinion. but the 1990 was the best.

That rooftop scene was so fucking awesome in the first movie I could watch that scene over and over. Plus the score in the first movie whenever Shredder came in the scenes were dope as hell too.

Hands down best version of The Shredder, they should make a game based on the 90's TMNT.

Amen to the commenters saying what I was thinking....first off I love the new shredder outfit and color...if it were on a shirt or action figure I'd buy it quick! But yes his headquarters was a junkyard and as u can see in one of the scenes he pretty much made his own helmet design ...and the rest of the costume followed with what he could collect from the metal thrift store 😁 P.S love his iconic voice (. The reason his outfit was so diy in part 2 was because the henchman who made his first outfit was either arrested at the end of the first film or was killed by shredder for shredder reasons. Tatsu made his second uniform, he likes purple... and baggy clothes :p

Dude you're right about the shirt because I bought a Shredder fitted hat with his iconic helmet from 1990 and was told by the guy that after the Turtles resurfaced, the hat was a big sale.

So glad I found this lol huge TMNT fan, both the 80s/90s till now....Still remember the original movie word for word....but totally agree on Shredders look being better in the original, way to cartoony for Secret of the ooze.

The shredder looked so iconic and fearsome in the 1990 film which is my favorite of all the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles films. Tonally it's the best and is much darker than future movies which I love. The look of turtles are amazing and nothing has come close to the standards that were set in the 1990 movie.

"What happened to all the little cool details?" They got crushed by the garbage truck at the end of the first movie. The whole point is that he had to make a new outfit out of things they were able to procure from the junkyard basically.

They're both really good. Yeah the costume in II is more cartoony and less intense but that matches with the whole film overall-and that's OK.

They also changed the actor: to someone bigger I believe. He doesn’t look like an athletic marshall arts master in the second one, but more of a bulky dude.

The first movie’s design is my favorite behind both the 2003 and 2012 cartoons. It’s so simple, yet sleek and intimidating.

When I saw the 1st TMNT movie I couldn't stop watching it. I will be honest and say I still love it. Now when Shredder changed outfits, from 1st movie to the second movie I just suspected that the first was smelly so he changed. Nothing wrong with that. The helmet change...it was rather big and clumsy but it worked for the time period of the piece. It was awesome and still is. Hopefully, Michael Bay doesn't make the new TMNT movie that they come from space or steroid induced like the other two films.

Tmnt the movie (1990) is imo the best example of how to adapt cartoons to live action.

Shredder is not played by the same guy in both movies, either. In the first movie, the guy in the Shredder costume is James Saito. In the second movie, the guy in the Shredder costume is Francois Chau. That's probably why, they didn't show his face in the second movie, so no one would notice it's a different person but then again, April was obviously played by a different actress in the second movie.

I feel the same way. But I agree that the 1990 Shredder was based on the comics while Secret of the Ooze is based on the cartoon.

The thought of what they could do if they used Avatar's/Alita's CG technology and used the original Turtle designs from 1990 and made a direct sequel to the first two movies. That would indeed be movie bliss!!!

The actor behind shredder was better in 1990 too. He emoted with his eyes while the Secret of the ooze shredder just stood there with the same look on his face throughout the whole film. 1990 shredder rocks!

something that you didn't point out was that they were two different actors playing The Shredder, that's why the costume didn't fit right. the actor in secret of the ooze was a replacement actor, but the fitting for the costume was for the actor from the first movie.

I prefer the original overall look of the Shredder, but I think the purple color of the SotO outfit suits him better than that first maroon color. Shredder’s a dark character overall (aside from some of the goofier elements he hangs around with) and a ninja himself, and to me, the purple-and-silver just feels more “shinobi”. Still, I think overall the first LA film nailed the sheer intimidation factor better than any other version of the Shredder. I always felt like the SotO version was designed the way he was not from laziness, but because he wanted to look scarier but he’s now limited to living in a literal junkyard, without all the resources the Foot Clan had when it was running NYC’s criminal underground. He had to get a little more creative with his new outfit, since he couldn’t get it tailor-made like he probably did the first one. My only complaint with SotO Shredder is that we didn’t really get yo see him fight the Turtles again. The fight scenes with him in the first film were some of the best, so it always disappointed me that instead of showing off just how badass he was a second time, he just pulled normal villain stuff (trap and kill, send out the henchmen/mutants). Super Shredder was promising, but died too quickly. Then again, considering what apparently happened to his face, the garbage truck may have done more damage to him than he let on, which could explain why the outfit was bulkier and he didn’t get so physical until he drank the treated ooze. He may have been hiding the true extent of his wounds and just intimidating Tatsu into standing down. Either way, it still would have been nice to see a full fight scene between Shredder and the Turtles in SotO.

I think one of the key things that messed with the shredders look, was the lighter tone in the movie. And as we know when it comes to a lot of movies a lighter tone in the script means it’s brighter and more colorful on the scenery. Sadly this is also true when they try to be dark and gritty in some comic book movies they literally turn off the lights. (suicide squad)

I like both the 1990 and 1991 Shredders. Then again those are still the only two TMNT movies I actually like. But I have to say that the 1991 version has always been my favorite of the two.

Good point about lighting you can see shredders arm spikes are foam or some shit in ooze.

There is only 1 TMNT movie and that is the 1990 film. Everything afterwards is not worth mentioning. If they want to get TMNT right as a film series, they need to use the 1990 film as it’s Bible.

I love how they portrayed him in the movies, like an absolute badass, especially when he first arrived to fight the turtles in the first movie, he came in like a nightmare, i just hate how they took him out like a str8 bitch on BOTH movies 😴

I dig the video man but literally no one missed the blatant changes to Shredder from Orig to SotO. The first helmet is the base of the second helmet, I read that the actual first helmet prop was modified for the second film.

I still don't understand why film makers insist on straying from the original looks/designs of iconic cartoons when making them in to feature films! I mean it's just heart breaking to see such a change made to these iconic characters (not just in TMNT). I still watch the 1990 movie to this day and am still blown away by how they recreated this epic movie. Just goes to show that you don't need all this fancy CGI to create something special. Sometimes just sometimes less is more.

I like the design on the original shredder more. Especially the helmet. However I would say that I like the colors on the Secret of the Ooze version better.

I think in the sense of Shredder looking different and goofy in the second movie is to make him seen as going insane after his fall. I think that this is also justified when Shredder becomes Super Shredder in the movie and Leonardo yells at him "Shredder, you gotta listen to reason" or he would kill them when trying to get the pier to collapse. His silly attitude in the movie though made to evoke the lighter tone, I believe it was also made to state that fact of insanity when he returns as I mentioned because it is him that also alters the Helmet. I know NECA already has made the 2nd Shredder version after they released Super Shredder, and Shredder 2.0 even shows the extra scarring on the face that the movie didn't show but was mentioned by a foot soldier.

the best way to compare the first film from the second is that the first film is a kids movie made for adult viewing, its extremely dark, grimy and addresses alot more adult subjects, whereas the second is a far more colourful, comical film with less depth to it, and made more like the 1980's cartoon

I think purple is a better colour for The Shredder, but that's the only redeeming factor the TMNT II design has going for it, otherwise we all know that the original design is pretty much perfection!

whenever I hear the name Shredder when associated with the turtles, I always get the image of this one, nothing will be better.

It was a different actor that probably necessitated the new suit for Shredder. Probably why it didn’t fit well and had to have a new helmet.

Personally I liked the touches in TMNT2- Shredders Footclan were reduced to sheltering in a dump after their defeat. If I had to make a theory, I'd say Tatsu and his ninjas had to gather and collect the best metals and pieces of armor to restore the Shredder to his former glory. They were both excited and intimidated as Oroku Sakai had little patience and vowed vengeance. As a reflection of his hate, you see him personally edging off his serrated helmet to a more intimidating spike look. If there were allowed more time, I'm sure the foot would make sure The Shredder look as imposing as the 1st film- but after crawling out of a dump, getting crushed, but his spirit not broken- I'm sure all he wanted was REVENGE. But again that's my theory. Please Pin this comment if you like my thoughts.

The only thing i have to say is that perhaps his new suit looked that way as there was probably no money to get a new suit tailored. Mb his original suit came from japan when he left.

He was so intimidating i honestly didn't notice his helmet or any of his clothing.....

1990 *was* better. Because Oroku Saki suffered a great deal of shame/embarrassment, they had to make him return from his supposed death looking "more intimidating", hence the serrations on the helmet and the change in colour. The way the helmet was angled was just.... ugh. Looks awful and almost campy, now that I'm looking back. Every return of a thought-dead character does need a bit of glam and pizzazz just to emphasize the character's return but, they went too far with Shredder in TMNT2.

It will never been done as well as it was in the 90's first TMNT movie. We can hope and pray to the great Pizza in the sky, but it's never gonna happen.

I prefer the 1st outfit in red. Also while I am a fan of TMNT 3 despite it's flaws, I feel we should've gotten an ancestor of the Shredder as aln ally of the Daimyo Lord Norinaga since they made viewers suspect that the boy Raph befriended, Yoshi, might've been the ancestor of Hamato Yoshi, Splinter's master. While Norinaga is dealing with the treacherous Walker, he considers a truce with his rival the Foot clan in order to deal with the Turtles and during the fight, Norinaga realizes his mistake as he learns the leader, Saki, is the one the trtles are destined to fight and not him and after being betrayed by Walker and Saki he switches sides to aid his former enemy Mitsu and the turtles to deal with Walker and the Foot. I prefer the first movie Shredder, though I must admit while his outfit is awesome especially at his walk with the cape scene, without the cape the helmet seem a bit bulky, due to the lack of either body armor or something else to enlarge his torso.

Actually, I quite liked how Shredder had appeared of the first and second 90's live-action film despite that they had changed between actors (James Saito and Francois Chau). I'm hoping the people who work for NECA (National Entertainment Collectibles Association) will also have 1/4 scale and 6-inch action figures made to look like how Shredder had appeared of the second film with the purple uniform, the different helmet details with the buzz saw blades and the face sculpt in the likeness of Francois Chau with even more scars. Shredder was much more intimidating in the first film, the baggy clothes in the sequel made him look like he couldn't fight in them so it took out any threatening visage he used o have. I enjoyed the absurd Super Shredder but was very disappointed they didn't do anything with it and just had him suicide :(

the blades on his helmet also have this ridiculous amount of forward tilt. It looks like he probably can't see anything in front of him. I think that's the biggest part of why the helmet looks so bad.
