Muslim community in Romania - composed by Turks and Tatars - is rather small, but its history is part of Romania's history - and I am not only referring to the period of Ottoman domination. For example, the first civilian structure ever built in Romania by using reinforced concrete (in 1912) is The Grand Mosque of Constanța, originally known as the Carol I Mosque and referred to by the Islamic community as the King's Mosque (in Turkish, Kral camisi). It was a gift from Romania and especially from the Romanian Royal House of King Carol I, to the Muslim community.

@@aniapaul2539 Well, I am talking about the historical community of Muslims, which has a history of 700 years in Dobrudja area (the coast of Black Sea). According to the 2011 census, 64,337 people, approx. 0.3% of the total population of Romania, indicated that their religion was Islam. And this number includes Muslim Roma (around 15,000 people) and Albanians of Muslim faith (aprox. 3,000 people). Since the census dates from 2011, it would be common sense to consider that during the two decades of post-Communism, the Muslim community increased by adding several thousands of immigrants from Turkey and Middle East (mostly entrepreneurs and/or students who stayed in Romania after graduation). I know of Palestinians, Egyptians, Syrians, Iraqis, Jordanians, Lebanese and, of course, Turks. It may be that many of these were recorded in the 2011 census. As for migrants from Syria, Iraq or Afghanistan, their numbers are small - couple thousand - as Romania is mainly a transit country for migrants trying to reach Northern Europe. However, 65,000 people is not a big number for Romania. For example, I was born in Buzau, a city 124 km north of Bucharest, which has more that 115,000 people and it's ranking as 18th in Romania, in terms of population.

I'm sorry to dissapoint you, but there's not any "islamic culture", here!🇷🇴☦ Those ones are tatars, settled here for about 400 years, during the ottoman invasions of Dobrogea(the eastern part of Romania) Tatars are now fully assimilated and integrated into the Romanian society and lifestyle!

Similar to how Western Europe gained so much richness Educationally and Materially via the Muslims of the Levant and Al-Andalus (Islamic Spain)

The muslim minority of Dobrogea, Romania actually protected the country's interests and safety several times, in past and also more recently. And like most regions of Romania ... are actually some of the safest places in Europe. Unlike some outside impressions about the country.

This is a very old comunity ( mainly tatars and turks ), they are respected and perfectly integrated in the society while keeping their traditions. A perfect blend never seen in the west. Always respected each other traditions and religions.

Romania had a lot of Greek influence. many from Romania aristocracy were intertwined with Greek aristocracy from Easter Roman Empire and aromanian (of Greek or macedonean descendancy) . (Ex Mihai I was son Of Patrascu the Good and Theodora Kantakouzenos) etc. Also, a lot of overlords were of Greek descendancy: ex Ipsilanti. Romania is a sort of mini Roman empire, with a lot of influences and minorities with latin as the lingua franca and everybody minding their own religion, not that of their neighbor.

Speaking of getting together well, with one church after another, I think one unique church, probably unique in the whole world but I might be wrong, is a church in a village called Hiliseu-Crisan in Botosani, and it's half orthodox and half catholic.

I am writing from Istanbul, Turkey. My mother's family is Crimean Tatar. My grandmother's family migrated from Crimea to Polatlı near Ankara in the late 19th century. My grandfather's family first immigrated to Constanta, Romania, my grandfather was born there in 1913, and after the establishment of the Turkish Republic in 1923, they immigrated to Polatlı, Turkey. Çiğbörek (çiberek or chebureki) is a Crimean Tatar dish. It is actually made with ground mutton and onions. They may be making the cheese variety special here. Köbete, Cantık and Tatar Dumplings (Tatar Mantısı) are also very famous and delicious Tatar pastries. Since the Crimean Tatars in Turkey mostly live in Eskişehir (between Ankara and Istanbul), if you happen to pass by Eskişehir, you can find the most delicious version of all these dishes. Turkish coffee is the same all over Turkey. Arabica coffee beans originating from South America are ground until they become flour, and as you can see, they are prepared by boiling them with water in the measure of the cups to be cooked in a coffee pot. You can heat it with all kinds of methods, even there are electric machines that you can find in every market in Turkey, but heating using sand in this way has become popular in the last 10 years as it attracts the attention of tourists. Turkish coffee is actually drunk after meals as it facilitates digestion. If you come to Turkey, the Turkish coffee brand of Mehmet Efendi is the most famous coffee shop in Istanbul Spice Bazaar. Almost all of Turkey is accustomed to the taste and smell of Mehmet Efendi coffee. There was a red Turkish flag on the wall in the mosque, and the attendant shook hands and replied in Turkish, "thank you too." I have been following Molly & Matt since last year, they visited all the Balkan countries but they did not come to Turkey. Even though the summer is over, the Mediterranean coasts, especially in coastal cities such as Antalya, Fethiye and Bodrum, the weather is mild until December, the sea water is still warm and you can swim in the sea.

Selcuk, don't be so sure everything is better in your Turkey, speaking about meal and coffee. These people have a long tradition in their cuisine, sometime different comparing with turkish area. But what about the turkish civilian rights laws, where Christians existence is denied and Agia Sophia became again a mosque (despite Ataturk decision), in Romania these people and many others are protected and encouraged to keep their beliefs alive.

@@sorin6566 First of all, I didn't say anything like Turkey is better in my article. You are making wrong inferences. You are also prejudiced about my country. No country, no people can be stigmatized by the actions of a single person, not everyone living in a country has the same political thought and religious belief. Like your first conclusion, there are many errors in your later writings. The mosque attendant uses Istanbul lettering on the covers, there is a Turkish flag on the wall and he speaks Turkey Turkish. I don't know whether he was assigned there voluntarily or by the Turkish Directorate of Religious Affairs. The coffee place uses the kind of coffee sets you can see everywhere in Turkey. Either the owner must be from Turkey or he brought the coffee sets from Turkey. So they use the same ones you can find in Turkey/Istanbul. Crimean Tatars mostly live in Turkey. According to Wikipedia, they are thought to have a population of close to 6 million. Naturally, those who best preserve their food culture are in Turkey. But I'm not saying that the best can be found in Turkey, it's your misunderstanding. My mother is also Crimean Tatar. Most of my childhood was spent among them, I grew up seeing those meals, weddings and customs. If you have the chance to come to Turkey, you can find plenty of Crimean Tatars and taste their food in Bursa, Eskişehir and Ankara's Polatlı district. I will not enter into your unnecessary discussion about what Atatürk and Erdoğan did on different times. Political and religious divisions divide people and turn them against each other. However, every culture has its own beauties. Every culture has good food that you will be amazed by tasting, and folk songs and music that you will be fascinated to listen to. For intercultural friendship and understanding, we should talk about the beautiful features of both sides. By discussing matters that we have no chance to change, we only lead to hostility and further misunderstanding. If we want to look into the past, we will find many events in your history that will bother you. such as Moldova and Romania, divided by the Soviet Union. My advice to you is that you do not talk about political and controversial issues in tourism-related places.

Great message, thanks for the info! They probably didn't start off with Turkey, or didn't include it in this series, because Turkey is oftentimes not grouped in with the Balkan countries... (same as Romania, actually) - and this isn't outside discrimination, many Turks reject the classification & say they are an Asian nation. 🤷‍♀️ 🇷🇴🇹🇷

Good one, Molly you look Turkish, Mongolian :), We have in Dobrogea area (Constanta, Tulcea) a mixed culture because we home Turkish, Russians, Ukrainians, Macedonians, Moldavians, Bulgarians, Greek, Jewish, Gypsies, etc for hundreds yeas, and more recently we have other people like Syrians, Afghans, Chinese, Filipinos, etc. Dobrogea is one of the oldest historical place, I mean very old, well before Ottoman Empire and even much older than Roman Empire and Greek civilisation... Very old settlements and cultures like Gumelnița, Cucuteni, Hamangia, Cernavoda. Those people were called pelasgians mainly and they had the Belagians natural laws. The majority of Romanians are welcoming and live their lives like in the Belagines laws, living similar as their ancestors. The Greek "mythology" is really Romanian-Bulgarian real history (a bit altered), For example Apollo, Orpheus were born in Thracian( more exactly Apollo were born in Ialomita,Romania), they both used to sing at liRA (guitar = chitaRA being a descendant of lyRA). They represent the light, sun, music, etc When they were singing, people and even animals used to come around how the earth comes around the "w-A

I agree, tolerance is what is needed. (with some limits ofc - cause, *for example,* the Rroma community's tradition of marrying their children/daughters at 12, is not ok regardless of how cultural it is. And some other things like that within any culture/ethnicity)

The front area is reserved for prayer. Those come for prayer would perform ablution which includes washing the feet. As a visitor you dont need to perform ablution. Since those pray also put their head on the floor, it is a matter of keeping the area clean.

We have no claim of Bulgarian territory, except maybe a small part of Southern Dobrogea - but the *entire* Dobrogea region passed through many hands over the centuries, really. So we were lucky to get a part.. 🤭

You hear about it since childhood (from school, family etc.) - but it's under the radar for most ppl, cause it's not that relevant nowadays. 🤷‍♀️ People have more contemporary issues/topics to think about.

We dont have lot of muslims in Romania, we where opposed to dont take syrian refugees and we happy for that decision, just look at northern european countries today ... history with muslims is not very appreciated in romania, the otoman empire came with war not peace to impose Allah ... Christianity didnt spread trough conquest like islam did ..
