My thoughts go out to Bruce's family. The community will not be the same without him and I know I'll miss him. Its a sad time for us all and I don't even know what to say really. We should re-nickname the Blusey the Brucey or something, do something to memorialize him. I'm not done, he was one of the first people I met in the hobby and I saw him everywhere. He was really generous. Very kind person. So many jerks in this hobby and Bruce was just above all that somehow. I miss him.
@@Nefville Excellent idea Nef. Think we should just call it "The Bruce Submariner" from now on. I have been reflecting on how much of a presence he was with all of the channels. He never missed a beat and was always here to congratulate, share his appreciation and thank us. It's going to be empty without him being here now. A true gentlemen. And thank you for the words brother 🥃
This new Marine Nationale is basically a simplified Pelagos…200m rather than 500m WR, no helium escape valve, no date (hallelujah!) no sloping rehaut, not even the facility to add a bracelet or standard strap. Which I find all just fine. But why did they have to keep it at 42mm and even worse, the same huge 52.5mm lug to lug then? 40mm with a 50mm or less lug to lug would of been ideal and made this a hit I reckon.
Well said David. One hand I do really, really like the "stripping down" of the model for the sake of being "all function" and less fashion. Thinner case, flatter presence on the wrist, size excellent for legibility, an absolute lume monster (I'm in the minority, but love wearing my divers on straps) The lug to lug, guess it's something we'll all have to experience for ourselves. It's definitely going to wear a lot larger than a standard 42 with all of these details added 🥃
The 42 bezel for the MN issue makes sense as it is more practical and for military use. 40 for civilian issue would be great but I imagine the cost benefit just doesnt work out with such a significant change between military issue and civilian issue.
@@ProperCh yeah, I get that now. It turns out the standard Pelagos’s lug to lug is actually 50mm not 52mm as used here. Likely due to the use of solid integrated lugs rather than spring bars. The FXD is also considerably slimmer than the standard Pelagos too, which I was not aware of. The HODINKEE article is very informative. I understand better the design choices made for this timepiece now.
@@RussianSkiAmateurs you could use a single-pass NATO strap to keep the watch sitting nice and low. That said a thinner case will still wear smaller on a strap than the 1.5mm thicker case on the same strap.
I think that could be the start of something very special. Definitely, a more tool and function approach instead of concentrating on the looks. Thanks IDGuy for the video.
One of those happy accidents Barry ;) I genuinely had no idea if it would work and thought "Hey, the square plots might hide it pretty well?". Luck and more luck. Thank you sir!
Thanks a million Steve! Really enjoyed playing around with the type the most (I'm getting way too fixated on dial text nowadays... it's becoming a problem) ;)
Do miss the visual depth of the index hugging minute track on the Pelagos x MN. 4:00 date looks at home on the snowflake dial, very smart. Good execution on this thought exercise.
My AD is only getting allocated 1 watch this year... happy that I’ve been allocated the watch 😁 It’s been a good few weeks, got the call for the Submariner 124060 and now the Pelagos FXD 😎👍
Fantastic to hear Adam! Something tells me this watch is going to change a lot of minds when it's seen in the metal. The colour has been adjusted, the profile is flatter, it looks badass, has all the provenance linked to a milspec piece... Ah, congrats! 🥃
I guess I'm from CANADIA now. I like the circle L in your design. I have become a no date guy for a few reasons. The biggest is that I can pick up the watch, set the time and go. No need for a wstch winder. Your comment of having the makers square so the date disappears is v Bang on, if the watch has to have a date.
Gotta love the pronunciation slips... they happen more often than not. But I'm with you about the date option. From what I've been seeing more people prefer the date on the Peli (and the thinking was to go with a more Sea-Dweller look) It's just so slick that you can hide it with the square markers ;) 🥃
I’ve heard only 2 allocated to each AD-would love to try it on in the flesh before deciding but it probably won’t be in stock! The Swiss 🇨🇭know FOMO very well 😎. Best regards
That's so crazy to think... only 2? Can you imagine what the Demand / Hype is going to be like?? It sounds like we'd all like to experience them first to see if we can rock the 52mm, regardless of the size, I just think it's badass. Who cares if it looks too big? It's got the provenance, lume to blind you and a bezel to take heads off haha! Thanks as always Underachieving🥃
@@ID-Guy I just phoned AD was was told have to make appointment in store to sign a ROI . And as they are very limited on numbers I will be looking at next year to receive one. I have appointment for next Monday 9am. Wait and see.
Great call with the reduced text on the dial and the repositioning of the date at 4 o'clock; a "tool watch" could still be functional and look cool at the same time 👍. If Hans Wilsdorf could've seen what has become of present day Rolex and Tudor, I wonder which brand he would've thought best represented his initial vision for his watch company 🤔? Oh well. Great vid as always 🍺
Don't worry brother, you're not the only one. Over the past month of working through this new format people expected me to be in my late 50's, elbow pads on my jacket sleeves, pipe in mouth. Talk about a let down ;)
Great review and I like your design better. IMHO, the design and dimensions are a bit of a let down. Let me explain, I have 8.5" wrists and I just measured my 44mm Panerai Luminor lug to lug at 53mm on a 44mm diameter watch which is about as large as even I would go with large wrists. While I love my Luminor, the proportional oversized dimensions are inhererit in the design, as it goes for the Pelagos, historically, I don't believe they've ever been that large and I don't think the size will be very welcomed. Also, I'm really disappointed that one of the best Pelagos features is gone - the bracelet. Anyways, it's nice to have a new release to discuss. Cheers
Nice design changes IDGuy. Nevertheless, I think the FXD is brilliant. As for all the antipathy being hurdled at it? I’m enjoying that too! This sort of reaction often happens when artists do the big reveal. It will be universally loved soon enough. “It lacks drilled lugs? WTF!” Great video, thanks!
Over the last 24 hours looking at reviews, seeing more photos, this watch is going to be killer. The blue is better, it's simplified (and I love the fact that it's using fixed bars, almost all my divers are on natos these days) Even the size and presence on the wrist, it's the novelty that'll make it stick. Tudor making a hardcore instrument with no failure points. Great comment brother
@@ID-Guy also notice the case details. The side profile has distinct elements of the sub 94010. And the profile of the crown guards; the beak is back! I really do think this was a conscious decision. They put so much thought into this. I just hope 52mm L2L works for most people. Thanks again my friend. Love your analysis.
I like your black rendition better, but because I’m a 7.5+ inch wrist, I’d keep the 42. I love the blue, but black is far more fitting in more situations. The lack of date bothers me on a military based watch.
Appreciate it William. The size would need some revision I think. A big bonus is the fully graduated bezel would add a lot more "visual" presence on the wrist (which is a bonus) but you're right, the versatility of black, the subtlety of a date (like a Sea-Dweller) and the depth to match would make it even more hardcore 🥃
"Canadia", I nearly drowned my keyboard on that out take, many thanks IDGuy!. No my comment from "Engliand" or "Engerland" as some soccer fans would have us believe it's pronounced. From my comment from the last "What'll it be Tudor" I think most of my wishes have been granted. Titanium case (although not some clever bracelet option (yet?)), ceramic insert and fully lumed bezel. The loss of the date complication does not worry me but it is a tad disappointing that we have lost the old Pelagos angled chapter ring that the hour markers cut into but on the plus side the markers still look like they are applied and not printed. I would hope Tudor keep the current Pelagos running along side the FXD as that for me is still the perfect every day tool watch. Another note is that the FXD is cheaper than the old Pelagos. If I recall correctly the 'smiley' text on the current dial distinguishes the in house movements from the 3rd party ones so the flat text makes sense. I would also like to see a black dial variant with your proposed dial updates in the render. I'll have to contact the AD to express my interest in this piece so I may see the new v my LHD Pelagos.
Great points Anthony! And yes about the Smiley text! I've been thinking about the idea of wearing one of these a lot and it actually would fit into my lifestyle seamlessly... All of my divers (save the Omega 57) are on Nato's and I use them everyday for workouts. Timing the sessions, lap times etc. The thought of having a lume monster with all of these reduced details would make for such an ideal Tudor addition to the collection. Must say, I'd connect with the snowflake dial much more (because of its historical significance & function) - It's just great that the Pelagos line is getting more attention now too, such an underrated line 🥃
@@ID-Guy just telling the truth! I've been following you for a while and you keep getting better and better. For me you are on the list “top 3 watch RU-vidr” right now! Chapeau sir 🎩
Something tells me many of us would've wanted it in black for that versatility, great point. The bonus is that the Blue is really vibrant with this new model. Some lights its navy, other lights it fades to a flat pastel. It doesn't look cartoonish at least ;)
Thank you for the video, I like this watch while after learning that this watch bezel is bidirectional made me think if it is ISO 6525 compliant, and IMHO that should be a "must" for a diving watch, if this is a diving watch as it seems… According to ISO 6525:2018: "The watch shall be equipped with a diving time indicator (e.g. rotating bezel, digital display, or other). Such a device shall be protected against inadvertent handling", in my understanding and in the context of the intended use of the rotating bezel it seems that the compliance with the requirement compliance is doubtful.
Someone get this man a contract in a major watchmaker, you're designs are just Wow man. Between this watch and a MOD Seamaster, maybe an SM300, you have the perfect divers, though the DSPH500M from Certina, certainly, pun definitely intended, also makes a tempting choice. Keep up the amazing content, I'm subscribed on my other YT account, but when you came out with this video, I had to pause work and watch it. Cheers mate
Good take on the MN's Pelagos this is. Looks and sounds seriously fun this watch is. A definite NATO, Zulu and other one piece straps options fest crave, but the mesh. 😎⌚👍
Overall I like it but not really digging the countdown bezel. I do like that there is no MN branding on the dial but rather it's left to the case back. That being said £3000 for a genuine tool watch (I.e no luxury aesthetic) is a hard sell for me.
Fully understandable, the countdown bezel takes some getting used to (if anything it's an interesting quirk) - but you're right the "stripping down" for the sake of function is either going to attract or deter people from the model 🥃
Hey IDGuy! I just had a heated debate on an online forum about whether the circular display on a Casio Royale is digital or analog, which then spread out over whether any watch (apart from a sundial) is actually analog at all. We figured that the definitions of what an analog and digital watch is are not actually correct anymore. How would you tackle this problem? I think it'd make for an interesting debate. Have a nice day!
44mm Seiko's are just perfection. Cannot fault the turtle cases at all! BUT I guess these have a bit more presence on the wrist (over wetsuits) helping with that legibility
@@ID-Guy Even in their non turtle cases like the SKX and other divers, Seiko's lugs are pretty short. I've often wondered why other companies don't keep their lugs short. Don't think I've ever seen long lugs make a watch look better, but have seen big watches look far better with short lugs.
I have this theory that it's about falling into an ISO standard. Most Navy divers are qualified to depths of 120m's (and that's already ridiculous depth) With hydrographic recon, most would cruise about 20m - 40m below the surface. I think the size was really just kept for the sake of legibility over wetsuits. Also eliminating the He valve was done to reduce thickness and remove a possible failure point? This is me just thinking on the fly ;)
oh man, your version fixes everything i don't like about the official one :) now imagine yours with the LHD beige lume, and the red date wheel and red pelagos name... ugh, i'd buy two, even three if they named it the Pelagos Canadia ;) here's me still hoping they'll release a 40mm Pelagos MN in the not so distant future...
Don't worry, I've been called many things, my favorite being an old professor with patches on the elbows of my jacket. Did a face reveal about a month ago and it's been good fun getting used to the new format ;) Thank you Nursultan! 🥃
Hello ID Guy, sorry, but I fell asleep during the live chat. I love the watch in all the photos. My one concern: 52mm lug-to-lug. I have a Sinn U2 which is shorter despite it's 44mm size. With fixed lugs it might feel like wearing an ironing board. Other than that it looks great. With that in mind, maybe Tudor might slip a standard Pelagos with 24 hr. bezel or even a GMT into the line up. Now that would make things really interesting.
Pelagos LHD is unbeatable in terms of design. Why didn't Tudor take something from him, including the beige lum. In fact, I never liked diving watches, I went to the dealer to buy a Tudor North Flag, and came back with a Tudor Pelagos LHD. There is something in this watch, you can't get enough of it, probably all the tricks for human perception were used in its design. Thanks for this video IDGuy!
I really like your redesign but the thickness of the Pelagos wasn't addressed in your option. The one thing that has kept me from buying a blue Pelagos is the thickness and the slab sided nature of the case. I'm not afraid of a thick watch (I wear a 16600 Sea Dweller nearly every day) but the Pelagos is thick and slab sided, as opposed to sloping down and inward. 11 to 13mm thick is the absolute sweet spot and has a lot more to do with wear-ability than diameter. If it weren't for the fixed lugs of this new model, I'd probably be buying one but I'm a bracelet guy so that's a deal breaker.
I really like your version. I would just wish you would have raised and solved the following point that disturbs the symetry as well : on the bezel there are sometimes 3 lines (between 15 and 5 minutes) and sometimes 4 lines (between 5 and 15 minutes). Am I the only one to be bothered ?
Weird right? I'm a huge no-date fan but something about the snowflake dial said "give it a try" somehow it hides quite nicely at the 4. The reason for the date: It sounds like there's a far greater percentage of enthusiasts out there who prefer the date on the Pelagos ;) 🥃
I'm rolling with Canadia from now on. Just humble tree farmers up north, scratching out a meager living in the icy gravel, on the frozen plains of Canadia...
I would go further and put the Tudor Rose inside the 12 inside the triangle and remove all text except the depth rating at the 6 position and the Swiss Made on both sides of the 6 position. I don’t need to be reminded of the model or it’s chronometer rating. Tudor and Omega are better at design execution and not over branding their watches like Rolex.
So disappointed with the release,if your version had been made id be in a dealers today ordering one,I've seen a few of your videos where you've predicted and made a version of what we could expect and there always better than what they actually make ! Tudour should watch and listen and start to make what the watch enthusiasts actually want, they could do a lot worse than get you on board to help with future models
Realistically this one was done in hindsight after seeing their integrated lugs and bezel BUT the difference is that I don't have to "adhere" to what the company aims to do with all of their pieces (design language). My design pulls from like four different models (and decades) instead ;) The enthusiast will always be wanting more sadly 🥃
Kinda repeating what everyone else has said but your design of the watch is better (one I would buy). Tudor came up a bit short with this watch. I appreciate their efforts, but nothing about this watch will make me want to buy it let alone want to wear it over other pieces.
I’ve just spoken to my ad manager and he has been told each dealership will get one watch this year and that it’s to be allocated to their “best” Tudor client. I’ve got 2 blue snowflakes from the 60’s and 70’s and feel this would tie in nicely with them…..I’ve put my name in the hat….we’ll see.
Holding thumbs for you Edward! What an amazing addition it'll be. It's the novelty around this model that I love so much too... a real collectable now with that military pedigree and the whole "stripped down" idea is growing on me by the day ;)
Thank you for your reviews! I was very excited for this release. You mentioned that that it’s more of a tool watch. How is this more of a “tool watch” than previous Pelagos if it lost the escape valve, the depth, and the bracelet? What I like is the marking in the bezel and a nod to the history (however it will be produced in millions, right? So that point will be a wash), but the cons makes the old Pelagos look like a more complete package or just skip it all together and get in line for a SeaDweller…
Thanks for your opinion. I think it's a missed chance. 42 mm gives any watch a lot of dial face and presence. This kind of opulence is something a Rolex can easily pull off but a Tudor, especially a pelagos should market itself as a tool watch all way through. 40 mm would have given it less sterility as a well as more down-to-business vibe. Also 200 metre water resistance is not enough. If you jump from a helicopter on the sea surface, the pressure can be immense upon impact. 200 metre could maybe not withstand that.
Saw it in the metal at at local AD Tudor event on Thursday. We propped it side by side on the bar next to another guest's 2021 Starbucks Sub and it looked downright agricultural (as watchfinder guy would say) in comparison. In fact it looked like it could have come from Sinn (and thats not a putdown.) Also it wears "small" because of its thinness and strap.
They most definitely are! But way less "mainstream" than we'd think compared to years ago. Still, there are many suppliers and manufacturers all over the world who produce mechanical / ani-digi watches for forces 🥃
I prefer your design, so I’ll stick with my BB58 Blue for now! Looking at this vs the Sinn U50b (blue dial which I am convinced is on the way), it makes me wonder how Sinn could attain a depth rating on the U50 of 500m with a case thickness of 11mm. Probably the thin Sellita movement. Anyway, I’m completely with you on your design reasoning. Excellent work as always 🥃😉👍
Something tells me our opinions might change if / when we gets hands-on with this new Pelagos. I'm discovering new things every day - like that they adjusted the blue, it has a longer lug length but wears more comfortably than the earlier versions... and it just looks badass ;) Thanks as always Mark! 🥃
@@ID-Guy …I think you may be right on both counts. The BB58 blue, blue, is much nicer in person and sold it to me on the spot. Regarding the often assumed link between long lug length and discomfort, we should look no further than G-Shock to see this is not always the case. I hope you’re keeping healthy and well sir. 😉👍
Great video, as always. From a military perspective, (and that's who it was designed for) it is just fine. The only thing is that most of the guys would prefer it in black instead of blue, but otherwise it's just fine, although it does seem to have a lot of lume (not ideal to have something that glows like Florence Nightingale's lantern on your wrist on a night op). The purpose is functionality not fashion. No military diver wants a bracelet with or without an extension link. The use of integrated bars instead of pins are because you would only use this watch with a NATO type strap, which usually consists of a long strip of Velcro so as to fit over dry suits or other kit, and would be used in situations where it could be nocked or impacted in some way that would possibly break a pin. It'll make a nice change from a G-Shock.
I’m so underwhelmed with this release, the positives are 1 line lees of text and it’s thinner. The negatives are the strap adds that thickness back, you lose the date, the great bracelet and that wonderful dial. I like your 40mm version but can I have it with the bracelet and different text and probably a less busy bezel, the date window is perfection.
@IDGuy thank you for your video. Question: Why in your opinion, are their only 3 indexes surrounding the 20, 30, 40 and 50 minutes markers on the bezel, and 4 indexes around the 10 minutes marker ??
That's the design decision that really annoys me. Make it the same all around. (Per your question: The spacing of 10 is shorter than for 20, 30, etc because the 1 is slimmer than the 2, 3, 4, etc.)
I tried typing my reply into translate but the grammar looked atrocious haha! Along with makers like Dodane, Airain and Auricoste, Vixa was another manufacturer who specialised with these "Type XX" style chronographs. I hope this helps Borja ;)
Agree on your points. However, this is just the first new iteration. So, I feel if this is successfully enough, fingers crossed, maybe they'll release a reduced size with spring bars and a bracelet option later down the line. If Tudor has shown us anything, it's that they're willing to milk 1 design with various little design changes over and over again. It would not be far fetched to assume there will likely be more MN Pelagos designs in the future. I think the association and partnership may be too significant to disassociate moving forward so this particular model should continue to see revised versions in the future. Personally, as it it is today, it is not the perfect version... and, I don't have the money for one now anyways. I have time to wait and see how this line develops and maybe changes with some tweaks, if they do. Would be worth the wait to hopeful get a (perfect, if not closer to perfect) version in which I'd have zero hesitation to want to get and buy.
