Vacation ?!? Hannibal escaped, so Dr. Chilton was afraid for his life and went into hiding. You can hear him ask the guy after the plane about the security setup. And you guys were still reeling from Hannibal's escape, but they did say the ambulance was found at the airport, and that he had killed a tourist and gotten his clothes and passport. This is in my opinion, one of the top three movies of ALL TIME. It won the big five at the oscars, Best Director, Best Actress, Best Actor, Best Picture, and Best Screenplay. Phenomenal work of art with amazingly complex characters and Jodie's portrayal of Clarice is something we will never see again - Clarice Starling is a very complex and relatable character who isn't overpowered, impossibly strong for her size- but rather an intelligent individual who is relentlessly embracing her femininity. Through her pure intentions and authenticity, Jodie's character became a symbol of divine power motivated by pure desires to save weaker individuals in her world. Despite the fact she will never be as physically strong as the men who tower over her, she preservers because she sees saving other innocent lives as a parallel to saving the lambs. The whole point Jodie was trying to make was that in the past, since women didn't have the strength or "heroism" that could compare to men, Hollywood often resorts to crafting lazy, unrealistic female heroines (i.e marvel women) who possess unfathomable qualities and don't come across as relatable at all. Besides this, often the only redeeming quality of women's characters in film is their attractiveness, or their relevance is limited to being as the love intrest to their male costars. The Silence of the Lambs changed that when Clarice Starling appeared on screen. The producers took the time to flesh out Jodie's character, Clarice, thereby allowing this talented actress to portray an authentic female role who embodies the characteristics of someone motivated by a well-developed moral compass rather than such trivial, one-dimensional(a relief for audiences). She is then juxtaposed against her male colleagues, almost all of whom are motivated purely by advancement rather than the cause itself.

I'd suggest watching HANNIBAL - the direct follow-up to this film - before moving to the earlier films. HANNIBAL will replace Jodie with Julianne Moore, and this disappointed my expectations BUT she does just fine. On rewatchings - after I'd adjusted MY expectations - that film is a worthy successor. By the way, when the guard is strung up and the innards are spilled out in that angel-esque/butterfly effect, HANNIBAL has a more lengthy discussion of 'this technique'.
@ollietsb1704
@ollietsb1704 2 года назад
The debate between the powerful and most excellent 1986's MANHUNTER vs. the weak but best-configured 2002 RED DRAGON needs to have explanations. For one, MANHUNTER has far stronger actors in the prominent positions - which does not include Hannibal's actor because Hannibal is a secondary character compared to the current serial killer. MANHUNTER's Tom Noonan is huge and awesome in comparison to small Ralph Fiennes. And William Petersen is far more powerful than milquetoast Edward Norton. RED DRAGON also suffers from a fattened and aging Anthony Hopkins, along with the same fattened and aged Anthony Heald as the prison psychiatric boss. And considering this film's tale is supposedly 5-8 years before SILENCE, these two actors' appearances and movements betray the age of SILENCE vs. RED DRAGON. MANHUNTER doesn't do this. RED DRAGON enjoys significant screenwriting tie-in's as a prequel to SILENCE, though - but they all feel contrived. and watered down. Scripted more like a soap-opera than a film. This is why I prefer MANHUNTER as the "prequel" to SILENCE but I recommend seeing both of them. Make your own decisions.

The name Hannibal Lecter is really interesting. Hannibal was the general who led his troops over the Alps to fight the Romans, so it implies both strength and tenacity, while Lecter is Latin for "reader", so it implies someone who can see what is hidden.

11:50 Anthony Hopkins was only on screen for around 20 minutes of this movie, but he just dominates it with his performance. There were people that were just terrified of him after this performance, but he is an amazing actor with a lot of other great roles. I hope you get to watch him in something else too. Bram Stoker's Dracula, Amistad, The Mask of Zorro, Meet Joe Black, Instinct, Hitchcock among many many more. He plays Odin in the Thor movies and he plays Dr. Robert Ford in the Westworld tv series. Of course he does play Hannibal Lecter a couple more times too. In the movies Hannibal and Red Dragon.

One of the famous sound effects used in movies is the "Wilhelm Scream." This channel has introduced us to the "Asia Scream." I imagine we'll hear it again tonight. For another movie that has some scary moments but is mainly a suspense film try "Psycho" by Alfred Hitchcock. It's very famous so you may have already seen it. If not, it's well worth a look. And, it contains one of the most notorious scenes in cinema history.

At around @30:30 during the infamous & iconic Buffalo Bill ‘Goodbye Horses’ make•up & dance scene->“He’s out of his mind.” Completely The writer Harris & movie director Johnathan Demme created a multi-dimensional & byzantine antagonist that was played to perfection by actor Ted Levine. I saw an interview with Ted Levine who said he gets very nervous & anxious during auditions so he immerses himself completely into the character to fee himself of the anxiety. Apparently he was so scary & convincing as we see him onscreen in the actual audition that it freaked everyone our which led to him being hired on the spot after a single audition. That’s pretty incredible if you think about it because it can take months with thousands of auditions & actors. The interview is on YT. Sadly Ted Levine did such a good job in the role that he was typecast for several years. Also there is a story that apparently when Ted Levine was so upset & unnerved by the scene where he is mock laughing at the victim in the well that he got upset & started to tear up which director Johnathan Demme loved so much because it showed a glimpse of empathy from Buffalo Bill lensing even more credence & complexity to the serial killer. This is why he calls his victims “it” so it dehumanizes them. The implication is that Buffalo Bill started empathizing for the girl indicating a sliver of humanity remaining in the monster. Just brilliant stuff. Jodie Foster & Anthony Hopkins said filming the movie was emotionally taxing & disturbing. It’s easy to see why. It’s such a tremendous film that still holds & creeps you out no matter how many times you see it.

Sir Anthony could teach a class on doing more with less. He's very restrained in this film, sometimes quite literally, yet he dominates every scene in which he appears. The cold, dead eyes. The controlled voice which he uses like a weapon. It's not at all surprising that he was awarded for this role. The rest of the cast played their roles to perfection as well. It's actually sort of a shame that they were outshined so completely. Have a nice day all.

It's not really a horror movie but a psychological thriller. There were hardly any jump scares yet you're kept on the edge of your seat with just a few creepy images underlined by the great score. Like in the kidnap scene, the autopsy scene and the escape scene where he beats the cop with a nightstick - you only get to see little bits and your own imagination fills in the rest, so well done. Foster & Hopkins brought to life this brilliantly realised adaptation from the gripping novel - the first enthrallingly researched bestseller that looked at the psychopathy of killers from the mundane to the truly genius who's intelligence is off the scale. So worth the read & so much more depth to every character.
