I know you probably won't see this but in the hopes that you do- I know you're into Nic-Cage movies so I wanted to recommend a hidden gem of his I found yesterday called Drive Angry. Obviously I would love to see a video with your opinion on it but from one Cage fan to another I just wanted to recommend this movie as I think you might find it both quite interesting and/or amusing of a concept (Also it's one Hell of a ride from start to finish).
I did a tour of duty @ Fallujah, Iraq. Smells like shit, it's dusty, it's dirty. Friendly people and kids for the most part. If you like donkeys, there was like 2 dozen free range donkeys. Also, there was a strange cryptid like creature I saw a few times. I believe that it was a nocturnal desert creature.
Very interesting fact: The nurses in the first Silent Hill film were played by professional dancers, which is why they were able to stay uncannily still, like mannequins, and then contort their bodies in such creepy ways. Years ago I actually had the privilege to meet one of the dancers that was on the movie set when I was at Comic Con in Manhattan, NY. The woman didn’t have her own “Meet & Greet” set up, or anything like that, she was just someone I struck up a long conversation with and she told the story about her playing one of the nurses in the film. According to her, she was a ballet dancer since she was a child and it had taken her years to learn how to move her body in such “Artistic” ways. She was a fascinating person, I wish I remembered her name.
@Nyoter Pant yeah there are tons of cool things regarding this movie. If you’re interested the “making of” can be found free on YT. Tons of interesting stuff in there, especially regarding the monsters (which are all amazing)
I also really liked the canary they were carrying around and used to tell of the darkness coming cause that's what they used to use in coal mines to see if there was trapped gas down there. Really good touch.
The first movie was the first horror film I’ve ever watched in my entire life and it scarred me like I couldn’t sleep for days. I was terrified and I still haven’t managed to watch this movie again
@@dinolover I agree that there is more scary stuff out there, it has more to do with my age at the time (I was like 11 or 12) and that I had never seen something like this before. The sirens and the ashes raining and that they couldn’t get back to like the “real world” in the end fucked with my brain. I was used to happy endings and stuff and I had nightmares afterwards were I would talk to people and they couldn’t hear or see me because I was in another dimension all on my own like it was horrifying to me 😅
The first movie was honestly one of the best video game adaptations really. Though the story may not be translated the best but the camera work, atmosphere, music and even costume design was so on point
Although I wasn't a fan, as far as video game adaptations go, the World of Warcraft movie was one of the very few to get generally positive reviews, the Mortal Kombat films have a dedicated cult following, and Sonic the Hedgehog was a financial success. Art is subjective though, what you may love other hate🤷🏼♂️.
@@mansoinc.4600 it having nothing to do with the game's story is not why it underperformed. Silent Hill was not a juggernaut game franchise at that time, it was very successful, but even if it adapted the story perfectly it wasn't like it was gonna made hundreds and hundreds of millions at the box office, you'd expect something like that for a Sonic or Mario film.
@@johnnyr2646 yea but you can look at these two movies objectively and tell which one had passion and which one didn't. Which one was a genuine attempt to capture Silent Hill, no matter how great or how poorly its execution may have been, and which one was just a cash grab by being a sequel
When the first Silent Hill movie came out, my bf at the time and I walked up to the theater, which wasn't too far from my house, to watch it. I liked it and thought it was pretty creepy. But one thing that always stuck with me was that by the time the movie had ended it had gotten quite dark outside, and we ended up walking back to my house which took us past this eerily quiet, foggy stretch of road with a lot of trees off to the side. And I remember being genuinely creeped out during that walk home which normally doesn't happen to me after watching a horror movie. So I give it a 👍
Out of all the horror movies I've seen, when it comes to sheer visually brutal deaths; dragging a screaming person up a stairwell, ripping their clothes off with one fell swoop leaving them screaming and exposed for a few seconds, then proceeding to rip most of their skin off with one hand and flinging it against church doors is one of the most brutal death scenes ever.
I think the deadly flaw of Revelation is that while the first movie tried to make a different story using elements from the first game, kinda like a retelling, the second movie tried being more like the game and that just made MASSIVE retcons that make it not hold up as a sequel
@@weybye91 the whole cult stuff was definitely worse in the movie, the cult in silent hill 1 is genuinely creepy and the idea of implanting Satan in a child's body is way more despicable and terrifying than whatever the cult in the movie did
The first film helped me sneak past a group of nurses in Silent Hill Homecoming. I didn't realize they detected both light and sound. After watching the film I shrugged and turned off my radio. It worked 😅
@@danielpeckham5520 Yeah, I think its present in sh2 as well. Its a subtle mechanic the game never tells you which is that the monsters will detect you easily, which is why turning the flashlight off is also an option but in exchange for better stealth, you can't see shit. So unless you memorize the layouts, I would suggest to keep the light on
@@madmonty4761 I think this is the first time I've seen someone have an openly positive opinion on those movies, and not attach some sort of disclaimer with it lol Jesus what a shit taste in movies, especially if that's your idea of "the best revenge". I saw the Devil is LEAGUES better. I spit on your grave is the equivalent of a toddler just screaming louder and louder for milk until it finally gets some. I saw The Devil would be like if a salesman comes to your door, and somehow persuades you into buying an extra gallon just for him everytime you visit the grocery store for the rest of your life.
The first movie was filmed in a city near where I grew up and it was already so run down that they barely had to alter the downtown area because it already looked like Silent Hill More than half of downtown has since been demolished because it was completely unsalvagable
im from hamilton ontario and alot was filmed here the hotel used lister block a famous building downtown that collapsed but luckily has been renovated over the years
Apparently the director of the second film also was a huge film of silent hill and wanted it as close to the games as possible but the studio wanted all these bizarre changes. Kind of sad because she said she feels so ashamed of the movie and the fans of SH and the first movie discourage her from continuing to be a fan.
Even if the First Silent Hill movie isn't a masterpiece, it was a real fan who put real care into the movie and gave people what they wanted. A movie fans can appreciate and really that's all that matters in the end of the day. It's not perfect, but it has care. Thats more then I can say for other video game movies.
Out of all of them the first one was clearly made out of passion and knew most of the underlying themes of what silent hill is plus the Saun bean scenes weren’t originally in the movie but the studio forced the director (who fun fact made a video to Konami who were reluctant on the idea on why he would be the perfect director for it) because they wanted more scenes with him
@@maxbracegirdle9990 nah u good man I made the comment before the video so I assumed he wouldn’t mention it (which tbf not a lot of people know bout that fact) lol
Well hopefully the new movie that was announced with the same director has less studio interference (it won't since studios are garbage when it comes to faithfulness but one can still hope)
@@thebloodyaussie1458 Yeah, movies are just fucked nowadays. Don't get me wrong, there's still some great movies that come out, but blockbusters?? They're all just popcorn trash thanks to the marvel-ization of Hollywood
The building that was used for the school scenes was eventually turned into condos. My wife and I moved into one of those apartments; we watched Silent Hill and it freaked my wife out for months that we lived in a “haunted building”.
the idea of associating a female protagonist searching to her adopted daughter for making maternity themes is not bad per se, the thing is that it brings absolutely nothing new against the harry/cheryl dinamyc
I am so sad that Silent Hill has been done so wrong by so many developers, moviemakers, studios, everyone. It's such a brilliantly scary, original story and it really deserves to be told well.
I'd argue that the first Silent Hill movie is a great adaptation and somehow there's a collective delusion that it was awful. The second one was absolute garbage
What they did to Vincent in the second movie infuriates me. Vincent in the games is one of my favorite characters, he's super complex and really fits the series idea of shady bizarre characters. Through the whole game you have no clue what side he's really on and a lot of what he says is confusing and you don't know if he's telling the truth or just fucking with Heather. I also like how he does believe in the cults religion but he wants to use them to enjoy earthly pleasures, which is why he doesn't want God to be resurrected. But no why have that when you can have boring cardboard cutout. Also killing off Douglas at the beginning is just awful because he's also a very interesting and kind of sad character when you find out more about his life. Hell even Claudia is completely ruined because while she's a villian in 3 she's borderline sympathetic as she was indoctrinated into the cult against her will by her Father who also abused her. I could honestly go on for hours about my issues with Revelation it's just horrible. While I have my issues with the first movie like the SH2 monsters that shouldn't be there and the overreliance on gore it at least feels like it was trying to keep the feeling of the games somewhat.
i remember being so disappointed with the first movie that the second movie didn't even phase me (yes, it is 100% worse, but I was just so irritated that I felt it completely crapping all over the story was better than almost being good enough but making so many unnecessary changes that it just ruins the whole thing for me). I agree with everything you said about Vincent and Douglas too.
Killing off Douglas at the beginning of Revelations totally misses the point of the connection he and Heather build through the game, she is a child who lost her dad and he is a dad who lost his child. Heather may not realise this connection until near the end of the game but Douglas clearly does earlier, he isn't just helping her out because he feels he's somewhat responsible for Harry being located and killed. Agreed on Vincent, the writers of Revelations apparently felt he was "boring" in the game...I have no idea what version of SH3 they looked up for source material because Vincent is easily one of the best characters in the SH games.
I actually really like the first Silent Hill movie. Sure it wasn't an exact copy of the source material but honestly it easily felt like a Silent Hill film. Probably one the best game to movie adaptations I've seen imo.
I've noticed that there're a lot of different opinions about first SH movie, but I'm pretty sure it's very good. Maybe it has its flaws (like almost everything), but, as far as I'm concerned, it has many good things. My favorite is that it has a dark story that not only scares you because of its monsters and images in general, but also because it makes you feel like the movie is actually deep topics like hate, sexual abuse, suffering and how it turns a complete craziness
I think the first movie is a great example of how a film can "stick to the original" while not having to be a one-to-one translation. It proves that changes *can* be made and still lead to an essentially faithful adaptation.
Silent hill has to be the most scariest worlds I've ever been introduced to. Understanding the world more than I did when I was younger makes it more terrifying
True. I only had the ps1 demo that came with a PlayStation magazine but it still scared the shit out of me. but it was so interesting at the same time.
I would absolutely suggest to look up the practical effects for the grey child because the cgi almost completely covered up how actually good the body suit looks, like the other practical effects it’s extremely well executed under all those layers of computer gunk
If you actually believe that then you have no idea what real horror is and haven't watched any real horror movie, thus your opinion is terminally invalid and you're dumb.
I don't know what it is, but I honestly never "got" the 3d effect. I always assumed that thing in commercials where things looked like they were coming out of the screen was just exaggeration.
@@HolyApplebutter It's better when it's subtle. Movies have gotten a lot better at doing it now so that it's more immersive. It doesn't take you out by shoving things in your face to prove that they can do 3D.
The silent hill movies were actually filmed in my home town. It's weird going back and visiting and seeing the exact streets and places the movie was filmed. But also I get to tell people I technically grew up in silent hill lol. I will say I enjoyed the first movie a lot more, it was very close to the actual games and i wish the second movie was more like the first one
i always had an afinity for the first movie when i was a teen. The siren reality change is the most accurate description of schitzo effective phsyiotic breaks that i suffered from in my late teens. Thank god i grew out of them but it was always hard to describe them to people but when the siren goes off its pretty much acurate to them.
I love how as soon as Elvis posted this video the comment section basically became a brotherhood of people reminiscing about their first scary horror movies/games. It's so cool how people can come together over the same franchise from such radically different entry points like the games and the movies.
The scene where Rose is standing in front of Alessa and the barbed wire, with the eerie music and flashlights dancing across Rose's face, is a perfect shot.
Sean Bean survived two movies in a story where his character is SUPPOSED TO DIE as a major plot point. The whole reason Heather went to Silent Hill in the games is because Harry was murdered.
The director of the first Silent Hill movie is the one who is going to make the adaptation of Silent Hill 2. We can only hope. When Heather in the second film said "Silent Hill was built on a Native American burial ground" is when i absolutely lost it
@@papafloppa Kind of. Before settlers came, it was used as a place for rituals by Native Americans, but was _not_ an native american burial ground. Also, the Silent Hill was deemed already mystical _before_ being used as ritual grounds, so it's safe to assume the place is just Like That. Someone proposed the theory that it was already Like That, then Native Americans used it as a ritual ground, then the mysterious epidemic happened, then after the settlers arrived people started to disappear, then Alessa's story happens and it was the last straw that broke the camel's back and everything imploded. That does explain how Alessa's influence spread all over Silent Hill (and a bit further if you consider Shepherd's Glen to be canon) and how powerful she was despite not being as strong before it started going down. It could have been made worse by all the previous things that happened.
@@Proserpira i see, very interesting,so what would u say is the root of the magic in sh is it bcause of Valtiel and the other gods that've been mentioned throughout the series making it their working spot or is it just some kind of sacred ground that happens to atract mystical beings,i wonder.
@@papafloppa I think part of the mysticism of Silent Hill is that there's no given reason for it to be the way it is. The book Roadside Picnic works like that as well. Aliens came and went, and we have no way of knowing what they thought of us, or if they even think at all. It's a mystery that will always be a mystery.
Do you think Christophe Gans next SH sequel ("Return To SH") would likely just *retconned* SH:R that it never happened in the first place? You know, like in every continuity in Halloween franchise did. Or, could the events of SH:R did happen but they don't want to acknowledge it at all?
I have two recommendations for you! Larry the Cable Guy: Health Inspector - funny for all the wrong reasons. And Casper’s Haunted Christmas. This movie is literally rendered with glitches. It’s incredible.
The first silent hill is propably my all time favourite horror movie. Scarred me for life, especially the bathroom scene😂😂. I was about 9 or 10 when i watched it the first time, for sure too young but curiosity killed me lol. I also remember hating the ending cause i didnt understand it, overall a pretty fucking good movie.
The first one is amazing to me, it's one of the very few good horror game movies, it captures the games' atmosphere perfectly. The second one it's Uwe Boll style, which if you know what that means, you understand what I'm saying.
Idk why Christophe Gans hated the characters of Silent Hill. Cause there was an article that had him say he used women in the film cause why would a man be scared of a giant pyramid head monster like BRUH who wouldn't be terrified of that?! But really his sexism helped give us wonderful characters in the film.
Pyramid head was literally created for a male character though! That sounds like he missed the point of pyramid head and silent hill, which is kind of sad since pyramid head’s creator does not like that he is used outside of sh2.
Because it has almost nothing to do with the game's original story lmao. All the characters have changed roles, names have been changed for no reason at all, and they couldn't even bother to use the same main character.
I'm almost positive it was because it was not accurate to the game. I think if they set it up to be heavily inspired by Silent Hill they would have been better off.
@@KyllingThyme They did that to avoid the party crashers, those gamers who gonna tell others the spoilers before watch the movie. Gans was really smart, even the last boss looks more like Mary/Maria boss, than the horned winged demon.
I loved the first movie. You can tell with the set and character design that they really had a lot of love for silent hill. I like how they made their own stand alone story that went with it. I always took it as the church people were trapped souls who probably thought god kept them alive idk. "Hey if we pray enough we will finally go to cloud land!" The second movie doesn't exist. Love all the weird clips and editing to make it look like there was a second movie, good job on that. Almost got me!
I actually really like SH1 movie even tho it has quite some flaws . Still I don't get why it has such low score , maybe people expected it to be a copy paste from first game. To me reimagining based on source material is far more interesting to see than watching something I already witnessed . Also that Pyramid head scene where it rips the skin is schocking , deffinetly the highlight of the movie.
Still love the first movie to this day, second one is embarrassing. I can’t handle that fight at the end. I’m glad Gans is back in the directors chair for SH2.
I loved the first movie for all its flaws it's a classic and it has some genuinely creative adaptions of the original game, but the Second movie it's just so bad, the only good thing is the final fight.
i genuinely loved the first silent hill movie and the scene with pyramid head ripping off anna's skin still is absolutely insane. you can tell that a lot of love was put into the first movie compared to the second movie and i still find myself reading about every single little thing in every game and movies on tvtropes and the soundtrack is so fucking amazing. i am so happy that silent hill is making its comeback with a new game and a remake of 2 and this series will forever be one of my favourites
I just watched Silent Hill again recently (saw it originally in theaters), and I thought it was much better than I remembered. It had a great atmosphere, excellent score, and was well directed and acted. I never played any of the Silent Hill games but still found the movie a fun watch. I didn't know the director of Solomon Kane (one of my personal favorites) directed Revelation, which I thought was just awful. She's set to direct the new Red Sonja movie..
To this day, the first silent hill film in my opinion remains to be the best video game adaption ever made. They switched around the characters, themes, and story, sure, but that's what adaptations do. They nailed the atmosphere and no other horror movie has left such a lasting impression on me.
Yeah, movie adaptations of video games have so many that just flopped that it was amazing to see one that actually captured the same essence as the game did. I really like the first one.
I always thought it was quite weird that the reaction to your adopted daughters nightmares about a place would be to bring her there to look for answers, and yes it's even weirder that she runs from the cop like she'd just robbed a bank.
That's crazy because when I saw her run from the cop I thought, she is definitely mentally ill as they over react to situations that aren't that dangerous as they think they are..as in the police women is not a danger..the place she is in IS! SO why not stay with the police woman who can help you! @ARMASOG
Meh I kind of understand going there to search for answers. If I started having dreams about the same place over and over I’d take it as a sign to go there too 🤷🏼♀️
The 1st SH movie will always be (one of) my fav. horror film of 2000s; the movie is what introduced me to the original 4 games (developed by Team Silent) and the rest is history. If the 1st movie gave me nightmares for a few days, then played the games afterwards, just.... *i could NOT sleep* at all. The sequel, known as 'Revelation 3D', however...... We'll just NOT gonna talk about that 😑
I loved the first movie, it gave me so many nightmares growing up 😂 pyramid head still freaks me out! I'm so glad I never wasted my time watching revelation!
I know the movies werent received well, but honestly, as a huge silent hill fan, I enjoyed seeing the mechanics and aesthetic of silent hill brought to life. Though the first one was by far better, it's hard for me to not like them somewhat. It's like the resident evil movies, both went their own ways with the story but the movies are fun enough on their own.
YES, ty. I love the music and the atmosphere and the monsters, because they were pulled from the game. Then the movie tried to go on its own with so many unnecessary changes it just made me sad. The first three games are some of my favorite things ever, so it was such a disappointment. I've watched the first movie several times, hoping it would get better for me later, but it never has, and just leaves me sadder than I was before, lol.
@@GhostofaSiren At least the first one LOOKED good and the acting was way better. I was always so sad they killed off Cybil cuz she was my favorite actor in the movie. The second one though, oof. Silent hill 3 was my favorite and to know the dude couldn't even make it through the game before making a damn movie on it, really showed. It missed the passion I feel that the first had. Heather was my all-time favorite character, and Vincent being turned into a love-interest type person was just so weird. They straight up butchered the story to hell and back. Actually, this reminds me there's a fan made silent hill 3 movie here on RU-vid that was actually pretty good and true to the game. If only people like that had the budget to make these movies, they'd be awesome.
@@AshChiCupcak He didn't even finish the game before making the movie? Wow. I loved Heather too. She's one of my favorite female protagonists of any game. Ooo, link for the fanmade movie, plz.
@@GhostofaSiren Well now I'm sad. I just spent 15 minutes looking through RU-vid and Google and I don't see it anywhere. Nah the first movie was my favourite. It was really good! I know it's not exactly accurate regarding the Silent Hill games lore, but as a movie It's one of the few horror movies that are dear to my heart.
@@dochermitcity8384 im actually not too sure, but I wanna say I was maybe 8-9? My mother let me watch a LOT of horror movies as a kid and while I loved watching them, it was still a bad decision on her part lmao. I'm not close with her anymore
Even to this day I love the first movie, so many lil details, the monster really give you chills and the whole scenary is on point. The 2nd on the other hand💀, the girl from the matrix looks like one of the siblings from hellboy 2
I'm glad you didn't absolutely shit all over the first movie because it was one of the first horror movies I ever watched and it blew my mind, I still think it's one of the scariest game to movie adaptations ever
I'll always remember Silent Hill simply because a lot of the exterior shots were filmed in my city's downtown. Why? Because it was so dingy and run down, they barely had to do anything to make it suit the aestetic. 😆
Also don't forget that the producer of the first movie is also actually working on a third SH movie based on the second game, planned for 2023. Considering that the first movie is one of the rare good movie adaptation of a game, can't wait to see it's release
Can we appreciate the camera work angles when Rose walks in the dark with the lighter? Straight up looks ripped out of the first game, bravo to the director
I thought Silent Hill was supposed to be like a personal Purgatory and that's why there were different Silent Hills and different monsters. People near the ones dragged into Silent Hill are sometimes taken as well because of situations. I have only recently started playing the games so I'm just going based on my knowledge from random different things
You're right, but I think it became that more after the second game. The first and third tie in together and is about the cult. Phelan Porteous and CyberCat do great videos on Silent Hill.
No. Silent Hill is not a purgatory. It's a psychological mirror that shows what's already inside of your psyche. The idea of it being some sort of purgatory hell just comes from a poor understanding of silent hill 2. And for the record, the "personal purgatory" thing only happens in 2. Every other game you are in someone else's nightmare.
@@silverg2862 The first and third aren't really like that, yeah, it's mostly the second one that does the purgatory thing. I'm not really sure if the others do it, because I didn't beat them.
I like how you analysed the movies as a source self-sustained without the need of comparing to the videogames. I feel like you never played it though, but it served well!
i loved the first silent hill movie!! even knowing the games and such and seeing the discrepancies, i think it was a fun watch, and i re-watched it multiple times :)
Finally somebody who didn't just rip this movie apart, while absolutely goofy, I really enjoyed it, like it sits on my shelf in box and I'm happy about that
The first one is what I'd call a carnival for Silent Hill fans. You go in to see things you recognize from the games, and to see some cool stuff from the games put to film. What you don't watch either of them for is an accurate adaptation, or a good horror movie
I thought the first one was a good horror movie. Not a great one, but I equate it to something like Malignant. It's not tryna be scary, nor is it trying to be this cinematic masterpiece that redefines the horror/slasher genre or something. It was a solid horror film that actually had passion. The sequel is a travesty
I remember seeing the first silent hill in the theaters and honestly, I did NOT notice the effects were that bad at the time XD they looked really good at the time I felt. Movie was fun. I liked it.
I cannot express how magnificent the first film is in terms of horror cinematography if you haven’t played the games you’re in for a treat even if you played the games too most movies don’t meet the same standards
When I was little, the second silent hill movie was one of my favorite movies, and it's what started my lifelong love of Silent Hill. I remember just falling in love with the town and how it worked with the fog and the monsters. I watched the first later at a friend's house. It was a sleepover, and I asked if they had a silent hill on DVD. They did, but not the one I expected. The movies aren't that great, but they have a special place in my heart :•)
