Excellent content as always, Jake! I’m 38 years old myself. Target FIRE date of 2030 in just over six years from now. I’ll be 45 at that time. My portfolio is dead simple. Three funds only. SCHD at 33% / JEPI at 33% / JEPQ at 33% and Cash at 1% for speculative trading. Portfolio value is currently $340K. Exciting times await! 😊

@@t.caskets9893 Yes, I hold all three funds in taxable brokerage account. SCHD returns as all qualified dividends for me. JEPI / JEPQ have some qualified dividends in their distributions, but also return as ordinary income for the most part. He likely has it in whats called a "non-tax advantaged brokerage account" which means two things, and these two things are a trade off. First, he will likely have to pay taxes on the dividends no matter his age. Second, it offers the advantage of having your dividends accessible as income at any age. With IRAs you generally have to be a certain age to start taking distributions. With a non tax advantaged account you don't. Summary, it's a trade off between taxation and waiting.

Hey Jake, your videos are always excellent. the only point of attention in the asset allocation strategies you always bring is the lack of global diversification. Having exposure only to the US is the so-called home country bias and historically at various times developed markets ex-us and emerging markets have brought better performances at the moments of US have issues, demonstrating the importance of not concentrating investments in a single country and economy.
@DividendGrowthInvesting
@DividendGrowthInvesting Год назад
You are not wrong - however it’s important to remember that about 1/3 of the revenues from the companies in these ETFs are generated outside of the US. Take PG for example. It’s a US company but they generate a large percentage of their revenue outside of the US. By definition, I’m getting international exposure.

JEPI and JEPQ following the same exact methodology. The only difference is the underlying index. JEPI is focused on the SP500 where JEPQ is focused on the NASDAQ. You could assume lower volatility and therefore lower income with JEPI and higher volatility and therefore higher income from JEPQ - due to the underlying index that they track.

The question I keep running into is how much money is the average person investing starting off? I make about $50k annually so I can afford quite a bit but then I see videos saying "If you only invest $10,000..". At the same time I don't want to play it too safe and not invest enough.
@charlielipthratt7291
@charlielipthratt7291 11 месяцев назад
@jacobdibert3026 - the answer is it really depends on each person. If you have low expenses, cheap housing with roommates, no car payment, etc, you could be saving higher $$ amounts than the average. Which means, you can either retire earlier or just stop adding to retirement earlier than the average person. If you're job has a matching 401k, put enough money on to get all the match. Then fund your Roth each year while your salary is low enough to do that. Then continue adding to the 401k and find a brokerage account at the same. Set aside an emergency fund so you'll never have to touch the retirement funds. Encourage your significant other to save as much as they can too. If either of you become the stay at home spouse with the kids, continue investing for that person with a spouse IRA. Back to your original question, everyone is unique. If you prioritize saving when your young, you'll have many more options available to you when you're older. Happy investing!!

Hi Jake, I am a foreign investor and am building my international ETFs up to $100k which includes SCHD, DGRO, JEPI & VHY (Australian Dividend ETF). The reason for only $100k is because we are heavily taxed when going over this limit which is 5% of the portfolio value between start and end of tax year. For dividends there will be additional tax at 33% (15% IRS, 18% locally) We have another portfolio for our "core" which is democilied in local currency as such is taxed differently. Currently, I have got 40% SCHD, 30% DGRO , 20% VHY, 10% JEPI allocation in my dividend portfolio. What do you think? Would love to hear your feedback. Thanks a ton and take care.

In that case, I probably wouldn't put as much into DGRO. I would probably put more into SCHD and JEPQ for example. I don't get the purpose in investing in mature dividend paying companies with little growth when far from retirement? If you are investing for the long term and can handle volatility why not invest in growth companies which would likely outperform where you would gain more or retire sooner? When retired you might decide the volatility is too much or want to live off dividend income at that point. Safer comes at a cost, if you can risk more you could gain more. Would dividends taxes affect you when at higher earnings/tax rate and be better deferred to retirement?

One question I have about long time horizons, why would you go after dividends rather than aggressive growth like semiconductor etfs or QQQm? Over 20-30 years total returns could potentially be huge compared to dividend ETF’s. Newer investor here with 25-30 year time horizon, trying to decide which way to go
@DividendGrowthInvesting
@DividendGrowthInvesting Год назад
You could do either approach or a balanced approach of both. For a long-term time horizon, its best to focus on total returns. You can get great total returns with dividend growth ETFs. It comes down to the question, do you want to buy and hold and not have to sell when you retire, or do you want to buy something that you plan to sell. Think of it like real estate. You could buy a rental property and hold it for 30 years and hold it when you retire. Or you could buy a home with the intention of selling it when you retire to put the money somewhere else. There is no right or wrong answer (asumming you focus on total returns). Do what you are most comfortable with. I personally take a balanced approach where in my taxable accounts where I plan to live off the income before the age of 59.5, I have my dividend portfolio that I don't plan on selling. In my Roth IRA, I have mostly growth ETFs where I plan to sell them when I reach the age of 60+ to reposition them somewhere else. Many paths can lead to success.

If he's investing that is the important thing, he has plenty of time to switch to income.

Awesome stuff man. I'm slowly committing more and more to a core / satellite approach. I got positions build up in a few strong stocks, have an amount I'm comfy with now, going to start building up my core position more (SCHD), aiming for a 60/40 setup, core to individual holdings.

That’s great! I think the longer you invest, the more you realize that keeping it simple and focused is the best approach.

@@glowbofox19 A taxable brokerage meaning taxable. I have a different account with my Roth IRA. I talk about my Roth IRA in this video: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-52d_gan91UE.html

Jake, I'm assuming that math was not an integral part of you financial upbringing. If you are living off/ yielding 5% or $35,000 a year then you must be living in a very poor part of Mexico. Is running water part of your life? Does your wife support your position? I understand that you need to make money. Me too. But not by misleading people I've never met by way of RU-vid.

We are generating around 50K a year in dividends right now from our portfolios. We both work on the side to fill the gap in our income. That is why we call it barista fire.

Is it or is it not beneficial to hold the same ETF's in a traditional IRA and a Roth? I hold 5 etf's in my traditional and 6 etf's in my Roth. (dgro, schd, voo, jepq, divo + vym in my roth) I'm pushing 50 yrs old and want to retire in 10-15 yrs.
@DividendGrowthInvesting
@DividendGrowthInvesting Год назад
Hi there!! In that case you would want to max out your tax advantaged accounts (e.g. Roth, HSA etc.) first and once those are maxed out each year, you would then invest whats left in a taxable brokerage.

Jake- I too just found this $DGRW and it looks awesome. Another Mid Cap fund I found that I love is $OMFL from Invesco / small dividend but great double digit performance for growth and my time horizon. Great video and its starting to cool of here in Dallas.

@DividendGrowthInvesting Good to know. Do you have any websites you use to find if ETFs pay a qualified dividend? Sometimes, it can be challenging to decipher. For instance after looking at their pages Cambria's $SYLD, I couldn't find the answer and for some reason Wisdomtree's $DGRW page shows distributions as ordinary income.
