I was just thinking about this. We should consider the overall costs of each platform and do the math. If you're like me, you'll find reasons not to start but this is genuinely the best way to start an online business.
The difference is you're hosting your products on third-party platforms. Essentially you're creating a store versus a website. You're limited to the modifications you can make to your store while a website gives you full flexibility to make the site look the way you want, add additional plug-ins, integrations, and more. Plus, with Gumroad and Payhip, you pay a fee per sale that you make. It all boils down to your circumstance. If you want to create a store quickly and okay paying the fees, Gumroad/Payhip will work. If you want more control, a full website is what you want. Note that Gumroad charges 10% fee while Payhip is only 5%. Not including Stripe/PayPal fees which is usually an additional 3%. It adds up.
