@@WillsOW4 According to colleges, you need to do proper references even if its to another work you did In the context of, say, lab reports or papers, all work not done for THAT experiment must be properly cited, even if it was yours.

I remember watching this back in 2007, and I was only 7 years old and this movie terrified me, I didnt realize it was a comedy thanks to some of the deaths. I felt sensitive about the bottom of my jaw for years.

Wyatt Webb when I was very little I remember watching TV and seeing that shot of the guy getting his head smashed by a statue. I was horrified. I watched Hot Fuzz properly years later and cracked up when I realised that I’d been traumatised by such a funny movie

Ah the scene that stuck for me as a child was when Leslie was stabbed in the neck with her shears! When I watched it again years later I realized it’s a comedy, and it’s now my favorite movie

Thing is, the name on that Shaun of the Dead DVD is "Zombies Party" and Pegg's face is covered. A clever way to directly reference the film without breaking the fourth wall.

There was a threat to sue Capcom on Romero's behalf over "Dead Rising 1". He didn't know about it. When someone asked him what he thought about the game. He didn't even know about it. He asked what it was about. They told him it was like "Dawn of the Dead" his response was something like "That's wonderful, good for them". Sometimes law suits have nothing to do with the name attached to them. Just thought someone might find that interesting. Great video as always Karl!

Thanks to a bungle by the original distributor, Night of the Living Dead is actually public domain so even if Romero had issue with the Barbara line it wouldn't matter (tho they likely would have been respectful of his wishes if it came to that).

@@Stathio Fun fact: Timersplitters games were made by Free Radical. Afaik that studio was mostly formed by people that left Rare after it was bought by Microsoft. Rare is the company that made Golden Eye and Perfect Dark.

The request for permission from everyone (including the stunt men) makes sense to me. Unless the original contracts all of the actors/stunt-performers signed for the earlier film included forfeiting control of the use of their likenesses to other movies they originally weren't signing up to appear in (or more importantly be paid for appearing in), they should have permission to okay/deny it.

This surprises me. Any small film or tv stuff I've done has said the production company has the right to use your likeness in any other ads, films, spin-offs, merchandise or anything they want without contacting you, which makes sense to me - i don't know why you have to contact anyone besides the studio who owns the movie.

@@katiehough2499 If you're not a "name" star, chances are it's a take-it-or-leave-it situation - either you sign away all your future rights in exchange for your one-off payment for doing the job, or you don't get the job. "Name" actors, and some non-actors like the stuntman (if they've got enough experience and respect in the industry to be asked for by name by production crews), have the clout to retain their rights. They continue to get royalties, they have to give permission for their likeness to be used in the way it is in Hot Fuzz (and usually get paid for it too), etc etc.

Filmmakers don't have to clear the rights for product usage (Apple etc) - the reason things get blocked off is that you can't really ask for someone to pay for product placement if you're giving Apple advertisement for free. Using other films or creative works is different, because the film studios and record labels have pushed copyright law in that direction.

Shaun of the Dead was made in 2004, blokes like Simon Pegg (eg pretty much everyone I knew - I'm a little younger than him and I guess in similar 'indie nerd' social circles) had loads of vinyl records in those days, anyway, probably just, you know, bought them in the 80s and 90s.

One of the cars that gets thrown off the truck hits a car towing a boat (which goes right into the windscreen of a cop car), which then explodes causing wreckage to go everywhere. So technically you were right.

If you haven't covered the Crispin Glover controversy from Back to the Future II, you would understand why studios need to do this. Ever since that incident the Screen Actors Guild puts a clause in keeping an Actor's likeness tightly regulated.

The place that does all the fish is a reference to the Italian director “Lucio Fulci” responsible for films like Zombi 2, The Beyond, and The House by the Cemetery. Great director! I really recommend his films if you haven’t seen them!

I figured that it would have to be a rights issue for those two clips to explain the expense -- but I didn't realize that it involved not only contacting the studio, but also actors and STUNT MEN. I mean, fair enough, guy's in the clip, he did the actual climbing bit, but still -- wow. Wild. Also, nice easter egg mentions at the end! I've never seen Shaun of the Dead (the bits of gore I've seen are just THIS side of too much for me), but it sounds awesome. (Hot Fuzz is one of my favorite movies :D)

What you mean is that it was the hardest to get permission to include in the final edit due to clearances. The scene itself was still really easy to film.

With low-profile stuff (TV shows, small budget movies, etc.) you generally only need permission from the production company, because the actors signed away all rights over the original footage, but bigger stars (or anyone with a competent agent) tend to include clauses in their contracts that forbid use in any other work without explicit permission. There were a few cases of unscrupulous producers effectively shooting two films at the same time while only paying the star for one. Half the scenes would be left "unused"... and later show up in a completely different film that the actors had no idea they were a part of.

Nice side fact: They hadn't ask for permission for "We're coming to get you, Barbara", because of a copyright screw up, "Night of the Living Dead" is public domain. That's one reason why it is shown in so many horror flics.

The reason they cover up the logos has more to do with moving the hassle than anything. Most of the companies with their logo hidden would love for their logo to be shown, so by doing that, it moves the hassle over onto them. It makes those companies have to go out of their way or line pockets for their logo to be shown. Sticking it to the man :)

FulcI is in reference to a Italian horror director who did some zombie films inclding a film called zombie 2 (though its mostly just known as zombie, the reason is a long story) and it was Edfar Wright not Nick Frost was a zombie with Pegg in land of the dead.
