Today we are going to talk about harmony and how to create simple chord vamps that fit a mode or a scale.
For this to work we need to extract some strategic notes from the scale in question to build our chords. In this case, we are going to use three shapes of three note chords.
The major shape is going to be made up of the root, the third and the fifth.
The minor shape is going to be made up of the minor seven, minor third and fifth.
The minor seventh flat five shape is going to be made up of the minor seven, minor third and diminished fifth.
To create the modal vibe we need a bass note that the chords are going to be attracted to. In this case, we will take advantage of our A open string.

I've been binge watching your lessons David! I got so much out of your videos on modes - they are finally starting to make sense to me. This was the answer to my next question on modes - how to create some modal chord progressions in whichever mode I wanted to jam over. Thank you so much for all the great lessons!

The comments are right, only in few cases the system delivers enough information to define a mode exactly. I normally use for church modes the three major chords in a key over a Bass drone. That works fine. Otherwise every triad chord combination works as soon as they include all seven notes.

Nice video David. Thanks. I saw your last video's and you're using almost every time this guitar. Cool guitar, with the mini humbuckers "i think". Don't wanna bump the headstock alltough. A Yola guitar.. is that a new brand or is that not real knowded yet to the broad public. I first thought it was a VIGIER logo on small screen. Is Vigier actually French ? Could be wrong, and will be i think. Thought that because your roots are French.A few years ago Vigier was more present an now you hardly hear about them ? Wondering what's the cause of that. They should be pretty high end. Cheers.

so, a mode not only is related to a major scale, but also the mode has its own chord progressions "inside", correct? if you are composing in A dorian (G major), the A dorian chords will fall under the "dorian" chord progression? so A dorian= A minor will be first degree then, 2nd degree is B major , 3rd degree is C major, 4th D minor, 5th E minor and so forth? or A dorian will have same chord progression as G major? Thanks!
@PhiLikeFlying
@PhiLikeFlying 5 лет назад
The 4th would be a D-major not minor, otherwise you'd be playing "A natural minor" if D-minor chord was played. :)

Cool video, but I was always taught that chord 7 in a major scale was diminished not m7b5(which is kinda diminished).... is the m7b5 and American thing?
@JohnDAvery-tf4td
@JohnDAvery-tf4td 6 лет назад
Fargoth Bosmer - The vii *triad* is diminished in a major scale. In scale-tone 7ths, the vii chord (m7b5) is called half-diminished because the 7th in a fully diminished chord would be flattened by an additional semi-tone. Compare Cm7b5 (half-diminished) = C Eb Gb Bb to Cdim7 = C Eb Gb Bbb (A enharmonic).
@Wallimann
@Wallimann 6 лет назад
It’s not, a lot of teachers call it a diminished chord (including many teachers), but a diminished chord is different, it has a bb7 (double flat which sounds like a Major 6th). :)
@BrendanMacsMusic
@BrendanMacsMusic 6 лет назад
I often refer to as a half diminished as denoted by a circle with a slash through it, being half dim chord (the dim chord that sits on the major 7 of the Major) and full dim as the dimished of the major7th of a harmonic minor scale. Thats how i describe them to my students (if we get that far! lol)
@shadowscott9910
@shadowscott9910 6 лет назад
Old fart here and this has been a twiddly term since the fourth grade when I started playing. There are three things we might be talking about when folks start tossing the word. The diminished triad, the half diminished = m7b5 = diatonic extension of the diminished triad, or the diminished 7 = full diminished 1 b3 b5 6 (1 b3 b5 bb7 for purists). Gets tossed around loosely and confusingly. As a beginner there is one diminished thing... that nasty sounding triad on the 7....

not making sense... why not use the Am shape for minor and AM for major?
@bytor99999
@bytor99999 4 года назад
I was thinking the same thing. It looks like the three notes make it major chord. Like A shape in CAGED, those all being major shapes.
@meadish
@meadish 2 года назад
@@bytor99999 Those three notes can form part of a minor chord too. Think about the E minor shape when it is barred, and you remove the pinky - that is now a minor 7 chord. Whether these three notes sound like a major or like a minor chord, depends on the rest of the context - mainly the bass note, but also where inside a progression they occur. If you apply a C bass note, it does indeed become a C major chord (A shaped). But if you instead apply an A bass note, it becomes an A minor 7, and it is one of the most common fingerings in jazz.
@jremil58
@jremil58 6 лет назад
I am confused... It appears the two first chords are different inversions of the major shape and the last one is minor (not diminished)... Am I missing something?
@all4onej5
@all4onej5 6 лет назад
JF Remillard I’m with you. It can go two ways really. He played a triad of the 2 and said, that eliminates the 4 chord, which is not true because that’s a different inversion of d major. With playing those triads it’s not giving enough information to the listeners unless you are playing with a bass player. I do understand his point but his chords are not giving enough information.
@jremil58
@jremil58 6 лет назад
Well I guess what I find confusing is the fact that his "minor" shape is the exact shape of the A major chord... and in fact, it does sound major. Anyway... I will watch again. I might have missed something...
@all4onej5
@all4onej5 6 лет назад
His 2 chord is supposed to be outlining “b minor” but the reason why it may be sounding major is that it’s also outlining an inversion of d major.
@Maddy29
@Maddy29 6 лет назад
JF Remillard I totally agree. Thank God for your comment. I was going nuts!! You are right. He is playing a major shape, and in isolation it is a major triad and can't be anything else. So unless David himself has a way to clarify this, I am going to focus on the main theme of the lesson.. Edit: Also on rewatching this video, I realized he does explain it. He is playing the minor seventh and omitting the root.
@all4onej5
