If you enjoy this video please give a subscribe it means a lot and helps out a ton! If you want me to do more videos like this leave a comment :) You guys have been so awesome for taking time to watch me talk about my experience with OG Minecraft and I love getting to hear from all of you! I want to come back to this in the future and create a more in-depth talk about Minecraft, if you'd like to watch that let me know :)
This is my first attempt at making a video essay so I thought doing something that meant a lot to me would be a good start. I wanted to talk about the old version of minecraft and how it has this special magic or nostalgia about it that in my opinion the new version can ever get close to. Something that most people that I talk to nowadays mention is how Minecraft feels boring or off so I dug deep to see why that is and here's the best way I can describe the feeling. I do hope that Minecraft is able to get back to that old feeling but with these new updates and nothing adding to the enjoyment of the game I think we have moved past the game’s prime.
I want to give credit to Paulsoaresjr, Cubey, and TeddyLoftness because I used their videos to help enhance the video. I wish I could give credit to all the pictures that I used but sadly couldn't find the original person of the pictures. I would also like to give my girlfriend Meredith a shoutout for her tower in the video :)

You reminded me when my friend started a server, main feature of which would be to start from old god-forgotten version, and slowly (once in a month) update 1 version ahead. We got lucky, and had the server blown up (60-80 players online), and as far as i can tell, this nostalgic felling was present there until 1.8. In this specific version they removed bedrock particles. They changed some rendering stuff, and made game feel "modern", they removed old illegal items (such as fire with animated texture, lava block, water block, portal block, yeah literally), and dupes (yep, we are anarchy players, and these are also part of our nostalgia). Old hacked clients such as nodus (i bet you remember this one) could even break liquids by hands. So yeah, old hacked clients also were part of my childhood, and i miss these times just like anybody else.
@TheMedievalJedi
@TheMedievalJedi 7 месяцев назад
I completely agree with you on how once they started making the game have a more modern take it sort of took the fun out being a sandbox game by trying to upgrade itself which hurt the game. I don't think it matters if you played on a server where you picked flowers or an anarchy server (I'd rather play on an anarchy server lol) different things make our memories nostalgic.

I still play on my original survival world from Xbox 360. Now I play it on my PC. It is fun to do all the new stuff. But, part of me loves the old parts that have not changed. The old mines compared to the new ones in caves and cliffs. The old jungle house I built and lived in, compared to the huge house I live in now. It really is a nostalgic feeling about this game and watching it grow up as you grow up in life too. One is for sure, I miss the old music.

I started playing minecraft in the summer of 2015, and I still remember how I made a lot of worlds on my laptop (most of them were in the 1.7.10 version) and the time I had while playing on the old Polish servers. A few years later, I had to play on mobile instead and in 2020 I lost all of my worlds on my laptop. I eventually came back to playing on a laptop and I used to play on a server with my classmates, but then it died and I created a new world in 1.7.10 because of the nostalgia and I also have a world on the newest version (currently it's on 1.19 because I still need to upgrade my tools to netherite). I have a lot of stuff planned for both of these worlds

It was a world with a mountain and a little clearing where my hime was (old pe worlds were eather realy small or i was just in the corner. I remeber my house was just a medium box made of random blocks with a big weat feild with a scare crow and a basement full of chickens. I also had a chest room next to my house (outside for some reason). I also realy liked stampy long nose so i died yellow sheep and called them my helpers. I then made a waterslide of yellow wool. I didnt even know how to craft tools so i just used a bone as a weapon. Sadly i deleted the world so i cant ever see it again😢

But I have the same effect on some Minecraft servers, that with the time, got unplayable because of the new updates. And all the time that I went mining, I have flashbacks of me mining in the past, with the Beautiful musics of Minecraft in the background… Very nice video, usually, we don’t expect such good quality from small content creators, but you are clearly one of the rare exceptions. +1 sub Have a good day :D

my first time playing the game was in 2012 shortly before the 1.4.4 update. my cousin introduced it to me a week prior after seeing me play a roblox game in which i was surviving creepers attacking a fort. he bought me the game and i made my first world. I wanted to see some of the stuff in the game so he switched into creative mode and started showing me some blocks, items and mobs. when he got to the creeper i said “hey they stole that from roblox” and he explained to me it originally comes from minecraft. then he got to the enderman. he told me if i looked at it, it would suck my soul out. being a stupid 11 yr old i thought he meant irl and began bawling my eyes out and he switched it to peaceful. I then made my first “”house”” in a mountain biome. i dug a staircase into the ground with a 1x2 hall and put the decorations into that small tunnel and surrounded the stairs with anvils to act as railings. this eventually lead to me getting super into video games and becoming interested in writing for them. Im 22 now and have a certificate in creative writing with A’s across the board. its the best memory i have with my cousin and overall in my life. he killed himself 3 years ago when he was 27 and im so happy he left me with that life changing memory. thanks larry for all the awesome stuff you did for me, wish i could have been there for ya like you were for me✌️💚

that's how i felt playing pc gamer demo when i was 7 or 8, I had absolutely no knowledge of Minecraft, didn't even know how to use items (i dug a hole in the mountain behind the spawn) or how to build, even after playing it for the next 10 or more years through various versions, most notably 1.5.2 (I got stuck flying in creative and had no idea how to stop flying), 1.7.2 (had a minecraft world with my cousins over lan) and 1.8 (when I started playing on servers where I got to know most of current friends), the pc gamer demo still feels the most nostalgic, the sole map brings back memories of wandering around it, going into the underground lava lake, into the water cave, to the dungeon that spawned on the beach or to the sandy section behind it, the worst thing is that it's impossible to re-live these memories, exploring Minecraft worlds now feels way less exciting because of the amount of experience and knowledge about all the mechanics and mobs, there's just nothing to explore anymore and I hate this feeling with all of me, even if I wanted to play Minecraft it would get boring after an hour of playing it edit: guess who's having a nostalgia attack after finally finding their old world and looking at old screenshots from 2016
@TheMedievalJedi
@TheMedievalJedi 7 месяцев назад
Oh my I'm so sorry that I gave you a nostalgia attack! It's crazy how you could remember these insane details about some of your first worlds. I'm the same way I remember my first world (I know it's in the video but I didn't talk much about it lol) like once I finished building up my base on the mountain I created a railway system throughout the entire mountain. At the time I was around 8-9 and let's just say I'm much better at making a railway not make you wanna throw up haha. My big deal is most worlds now are very bland and lack the extreme landscape that Microsoft is trying to reproduce. I would say if they reverted from the caves and cliffs update or even took some more time to make the terrain feel like it's not in the real world many people would find the game more enjoyable just from that alone.

It's interesting i get that feeling of magic and nostalgia playing beta 1.7.3 even tho my first minecraft was way after the release. Old minecraft really feels special. Btw you should make a world tour video!

Very good video, really captures the essence of what it was like back then. Little narration tip; you may want to edit out the breathing between lines, especially after a sentence. It gives the statement a bit of a tired feeling sometimes, like you're out of breath. Just my take though, keep it up!
@TheMedievalJedi

That is actually really helpful and I noticed that issue too, the video I'm working on right now is much better with getting rid of the breathing

Nowadays Minecraft is filled with useless updates. Back then each update had a meaning and was actually useful. Now we wait a year or even longer for useless mobs and features.
@TheMedievalJedi
@TheMedievalJedi Год назад
I feel like they’re lack luster now and yeah like every update before had a reason for why they were in the game. It shouldn’t take so long for an update to come out and be a hit for about a day then die out

@@TheMedievalJedi We could've had such cool mobs , like Blaze King , Titan Squid and maybe an expansion on the whole Wither idea , they scrap those ideas after the vote ends and we get some flying fairy that nobody uses and a giant mob that gives you plants. Pathetic

Started in Beta 1.2_01 on a cracked client, on a potato laptop. The game has indeed lost a bit of that core magic it had back then. There was no Ender Dragon, no advancements, no grand goals. It was you, the fantastical world generation, simple soothing music, extremely simplistic yet dangerous enemy coding, and the restriction on blocks and how you could even place them (no upside down stairs or slabs for example) made you have to work alot harder to make something that looked really, REALLY good. No sprint or swimmode back then, aswell as the old janky behavior of boats, letting you make waterfall elevators, EATS roads and advanced (espescially with the limited blocks and forms of it) redstone contraptions to get around. It truly did feel like digital Lego, but where your selection of available piece types was limited. No overwhelming amounts of choice, no mechanics overflow, no distracting Main Goal. Just you, your time, and imagination. And the custom premade maps. These words will trigger extreme nostalgia in some readers: Vex' Super Hostile map series.

At this point, I consider old and modern Minecraft as a different game. My first experience with Minecraft was with version 1.5.2, I ran a server from 1.13 up until 1.16 which was when I played most actively. After which, I have swore off modern Minecraft for game design and chat moderation reasons which I disagree with. But recently, I discovered Better than Adventure, which is a modification based on Beta 1.7.3. Despite being based on an older version than I know and being significantly more buggy, it immediately felt just right. I soon jumped in hosting another server for it, seeing where this lands. Currently this server is the 4/5th biggest BTA! server and an amazing place to just play a version of Minecraft I still enjoy. I also have a server for Vintage Story, but as incredible as this game is, it does not have the same magic to me. It is a game which I continue to return to, it goes through a similar process as early Minecraft did but is more polished. But the same can be said of BTA! and this focusses on the simplistic beauty you are talking about here. While adding fun and unique things that keep the game feeling Vanilla, but still interesting.

I remember the first time I saw Minecraft was in May 2011 at age 15 when an student at our school played it on his laptop. I remember being confused about the graphics, but also interested in the game mechanic of building everything from blocks. Then later in September 2011 I discovered it again by the german youtuber Gronkh who made a Lets Play series of it (his Lets Play series actually has over 1000 episodes and lasted a few years) and immediately got interested in it and loved it due to the creative possibilites and unique concept. I downloaded the PC gamer demo version (the one where you can only play 100 minutes), and then later in 2012 I bought the game (11. February 2012, Full Release Version 1.1, I still remember it exactly) and immediately loved it. I watched a lot of Minecraft youtubers back then for inspiration and early on started experimenting with textures. Most people say Minecraft is childhood nostalgia for them, but for me it is late teenager/early adult years nostalgia. 2012 to 2014 was the first golden age of Minecraft, the time I was 16 to 19. After that I reduced my interest in it (partly due to my studies and other things in life), but a few years ago, the nostalgia made me come back to Minecraft, also the many great new updates that added so much amazing new stuff. One freebuild server I played on since 2013 is actually still alive and active today with the same old map since 2011, and I still play on there sometimes today.

i hate how people can't get over the "good old days" of minecraft. The alpha/beta stage lasted like 2 years out of what, 12+ years of minecraft's existence? All the quality of life features are missing from even beta 1.7.3, not to mention the building blocks and exploration stuff.

Can totally relate. Love the good old times, where everything was so simple. Just go, create the first world, try to survive the first night and lived like the most time in like a "dirt hole" because I was scared of the mobs. Then fought my fear, build the first random big houses or castles, just lived in my own little peaceful world. Then later on the first multiplayer experience. Played with random people from different cities or countries, made new friends which I played like everyday after school. It's so nostalgic thinking about this simple times, when also the game was just "simple". The athmosphere, the sound, the music, the mechanics. It was the best feeling in the world for me and I still think back to this times. Everytime the Minecraft music plays, it's like it "zaps" me back to this point in my life. For me, like the best game in the world and the game I enjoyed the most playing it and will always come back too. ❤ "It's not just about the game, it's about we felt, playing it."
