As a child-free spouse I have to ask, how? Who told you this myth, because this is the first time Ive heard of it? This character has been shown as a happy child free spouse for 7 years, there is no myth being propagated.
It's so sad that he caved in at the end. We need to normalise childless characters by showing that their option to not have children is just as valid. I get a feeling that this story supports a discriminatory narrative in the sense that certain people think they have the right to tell others that they don’t know what is best for them/what they're talking about etc. and that one day they will change their mind, yes. It's terribly rude to tell people how they should feel and think about themselves, and what life choices they should make…
I don’t think he caved in, I think he just made a decision. If anything it changed his character arc, he’s been anti children since the 80s and we all know him as that so they explored what could change a character like that. The same argument could’ve been made about him having a girlfriend or a wife, and now children. For a later simpsons episode it was one of the better arcs, what would’ve also been interesting is if he was sterile and how they would’ve handled that challenge.
we definitely should never normalize childless married couples. there are many vocations where procreation is not necessary. marriage is literally a vocation TO procreate. that is what it is ordered for, to start a family. adoption should be encouraged as well.
