It's been called soccer since the 1800s. It wasn't until the 1980s did the Brits start calling it football because they didn't like Americans using the word soccer. If anything, the Scots are the smart ones for using the correct term.

The term "soccer" originated in 1880, in posh private schools, but it was never anything more than a nickname, and certainly wasn't adopted as the most commonly used name in the UK. Football was the dominant sport in the UK, and thus never had a reason for a name-change. Soccer became the name for it in the US because of Gridiron football's popularity. No idea where you got your information from, but you might want to stop believing everything you read on the back of cereal boxes.
