sing 1 is boring as hell but the seth macfarlane mouse is such a funny character to me. like, every other character is meant to be super likable and relatable, but then you have this character who's just an unapologetic asshole to everyone around him. he doesn't even have like a redemption arc, he just indirectly causes the theater to be destroyed, doesn't help fix it unlike everyone else, shows up at the end, delivers the best performance in the movie, then fucking dies

“It’s just a kids movie” is a terrible excuse because kids are impressionable and therefore we should be harsher on childrens media, not easier.

The “My Way” and “I’m Still Standing” scenes are the only things I liked from Sing. The covers are legitimately good. I don’t remember his name but the Gorilla’s VA was so good at singing an Elton Jon song, to the point that he played Elton himself in Rocketman, and Seth can really sing good. His cover of My Way and just the whole mouse character in general were great. But that’s it, that’s all that was good in the movie.

The Movies can be summarized like this: “OH I know this song”

To this day for the last 6 years, i’m still wondering what the heck happened to Mike the Seth Mcfarlane Mouse

I really hate the "it's just a kids movie" argument. So your telling me that I got to grow up in the Disney Renaissance with movies like The Lion King but my son gets movies like Sing 1 & 2 because it's just a kids movie? Give the next generation of filmakers and storytellers something to work with!

I do think the chameleon secretary has a clever character design. She has a false eye so she is often looking in 2 different directions, which is a neat way to depict a defining characteristic of chameleons. (Their eyes move independently of each other to help spot prey)

Literally all Judy's message from Zootopia is body positive, they told her she couldn't be a police officer because she's too small, and she passed the training, plus she faced a freaking polar bear, and that person ignores it because, conventionally attractive" seriously ? Also F for Mike.

You know, my favorite part of Sing 2 was when the wolf boss almost murdered Moon. It was mostly the only time I actually cared what was happening bc Moon looked absolutely terrified, the one time I felt real emotion from the movie.

I just found out that the character model for the dog girl in sing 2 and gru's wife from despicable me 2 are exactly the same. They even were the same dress. Illumination recycling models to save that dollar.

I hate that people defend bad movies for “just being a kids movie” but then treat another kids movie like it’s the greatest thing to ever exist without acknowledging that most kids movies are terrible

me and my partner initially bonding over our shared hatred for minions is the only good thing illumination has ever done for me

"I'm tired of giving [their movies] a pass because one of them comes out and isn't as bad as everyone thought it would be." It seems Illumination's entire philosophy can essentially be boiled down to: Set the bar so low that people will be delighted when you accidentally stumble over it.

Literally the only good scene in this movie is the Gorilla singing "i still standing" that shit just hits hard

Sing apparently is part of the reason why Taron Edgerton got the role to play Elton John in Rocketman and that's the one good thing to come from that movie

20:32 I had to make sure this was real. I hadn't even seen the movie and despite Mark saying that this was a real line, I was thinking 'no way they actually put that line in the movie'. So, I went and checked the script online, and lo and behold, I found it. Not only that, but just one line above, the ice cream elephant calls the sing elephant (whose name I forgot and don't care enough about to look up) 'Your Majesty'. *I am not joking.* Like, I can't tell whether or not this is supposed to be a joke about simps, or if someone in the screenwriting group was _really_ into the elephant and just masked his attraction by creating another elephant character and having him say this.

i like how they were all "body positivity yas" in Sing, and then Sing 2 introduced several generic good looking female characters (Bobcat girl, wolf girl, dog girl), they are literally furbait.

I respect the restraint you had when you didn't mention that the main guy in HOP was Tom in the sonic movie.

I liked Mike’s story the most because he actually had a story that could stand on its own and actually be more interesting than the movie itself. Meena was my least favorite character because she came across as overhyped and ridiculously shy. Are we supposed to believe that she’s the best singer who rallies everyone together to build the theater back up when she spent most of the movie throwing a pity party that Buster enabled?

You kinda hit the nail on the head as to why Illumination films are difficult to talk about. I watched Sing in theaters myself and while it was far from anything I would consider good, it also wasn't that bad either. Like, I didn't feel like my money was wasted or that I was losing braincells; it was just...exactly what I expected it to be. And that makes it hard to talk about because I can't in good conscience recommend AGAINST the film. It's not like anyone's life will be worse for having seen it, and frankly, it's just not my place to steer people away from a movie that I personally dislike but isn't doing anything all that terrible. That would be...ethically questionable to say the least. All I can really do is point people toward better films and hope to God they actually find them appealing.

Man, if the movie was just about Johnny (gorilla guy), Mouse guy (mouse guy) and Buster Moon (not the mouse guy/gorilla guy), it'd be SO much more bearable. All three's criminal related stories could be woven together so nicely. That'd be a very neat story. Also that "Judy Hops" thing was the most sus story I've heard from a """journalist""".

Kinda wish the performers actually interacted with each other. The sequel acts like they're all super close but in the first movie (and hell even in the sequel itself) they barely talked to each other apart from the scene where Rosita and Gunter comfort Ash after her boyfriend cheated on her. Both movies kinda just imply character development without really showing it. Like that's not inherently a bad thing, like idk if this was even intentional but I like that Ash wears mostly red clothing in the sequel wheras in the first her outfit was essentially a copy of her boyfriend's, showing that shes more confident and has moved on from him, but in a movie about people putting on a show together while overcoming their own personal issues I kinda want to actually see them bonding

"Judy from Zootopia is more conventianally attrative to human" Yeah... But you know what Judy's design does that none of the characters from Sing does? TELL ME WHO SHE IS. On another subject. Mike last being seen with a bear behind him, and then not even being mentioned in the second movie makes for a really good pun. Cause he's a mouse.

When he said people were praising Sing 2 over the first, I almost did a double take. All I've heard was the second one was WORSE than the first.

Honestly, the worst part about this movie is how the KOALA named BUSTER doesn't have an Australian accent.

I think a movie SPECIFICALLY about Seth MacFarlane's mouse would've been great, a lounge singer mouse who got tied into Mafia (maybe a cat Mafia) dealings and owes them money would be such an interesting character

Honestly the only thing I liked about sing 2 was that the main antagonist literally threatens to kill buster moon and ATTEMPTS TO MURDER HIM TWICE ?? 😭 it caught me so off-guard because I was not expecting life-or-death stakes in sing 2

I am so grateful for this review. For the longest time I thought I was the only one thinking “I don’t get it” after seeing glowing reviews of the franchise

I watched both “Secret Life of Pets” movies. They were kinda shit 💀

To Despicable Me 2's credit, it was the last best Despicable Me Movie, due to it actually following the first film's story, as well as it still being focused on Gru, while the Minions were just a plot device. Plus some people think the 2nd Film is better then the 1st one.

The fact that people love these movies baffles me, fair enough liking it but some go crazy praising it. It’s the epitome of Illumination’s business strategy, they feel soulless.

What really bugged me about the first Sing movie was that Ash's whole story arc was supposed to be how she tries move on from her deadbeat and controlling boyfriend, but has Buster completely change her performance and take control of everything.

THEY DID WHAT TO MIKE? IN ILLUMINATION MOVIE???

The only thing good about these films is that they've inspired me to write a story about actually characterized anthropomorphic animals competing in a deadly spoof of American Idol.

For example, Shark's Tale has an aquatic setting, but the characters are so anthropomorphized that it could easily be a movie about humans. By contrast, something like Toy Story prioritized making sure that the problems the characters faced were "toy problems, not human problems".

To be fair, you have to have a very high IQ to understand the Sing movies. The music is extremely subtle, and without a solid grasp on musical theater, the songs will go over a typical viewers head.

It’s honestly refreshing to hear someone tear this movie apart because I’m honestly sick of my friends and family let bad film making slide because “it’s just a kids movie.”

Honestly, these films would work better as animated series rather than as movies. Because you cannot make such huge worlds and characters so quickly and so well in such a tight time frame, especially with the massive cast you have. If it was like a 25-episode season to cover these I think they'd be fine films.

I just realised that Illumination is making the Mario Movie. This can be either a movie that is surprisingly good, a movie that is very memeable, a movie that is decent or just shit.

I’m surprised so many people give Illumination’s anthropomorphic animal designs a pass, I think they look awful. Particularly Porsha, they literally gave her the most freakishly long legs they could. They learned nothing from when they designed Max’s owner from Secret Life. Same goes for her dad, they just put a wolf head on Gru’s body.

The only thing I dont agree with is that they're conning people. They're just making junk movies that the bulk wants to see. Most people are dumb. Studios are doing what people are giving them money for. It's not art, it's business.

One thing that confuses me about the movie that few people already pointed out is, like...why animals? What's the point of having this movie feature anthropomorphic animal characters when they don't take even utilize certain traits of animals? Like at least have a dog pissing on a fire hydrant or a sheep having a "b-a-a-a" speech tic, or even a grizzly devouring a jar of honey and stealing someone's picnic basket. Literally BEAR MINIMUM EFFORT! This movie could have human characters and it would still be the same movie.

I love how after making this video mark has changed the title from "Are the Sing movies any good?" To "The Sing movies are awful." Like he time to think it over and got more pissed off at the movies.

I think the point I agree with the most and needs to be brought up more is the point that there is a supreme lack of style in these movies. As someone who cares a lot about artistic direction, style is incredibly important to making any piece of art stick and be unique. Whether it be a game, a movie, a song or just an illustration, it's the firm belief of me - and many other artists I'm sure - that the fingerprints of the artist are just as important as the art itself, and with these shallow movies, there is hardly any artistic style and therefore no artistic substance.

See, this is why I'm very worried about the Mario movie. I know I know, Miyamoto's overseeing things and it's delayed but will that really be enough. Illumination hasn't made a movie that surpassed mediocre since Despicable Me 1 and has shown that it's willing to do the most cost effective moves to make as much money back as possible. Excuse me if I don't have much faith in them at all.

Only good thing about Sing 2 is Johnny and his Dads story. A character who never truly valued his son and how special he was until it was too late, but ultimately realized his mistake and made sure to let him know how much he now idolized him.

Both Sing movies mostly are bland overall, but just noticed fat pig's luggage at 23:22 is pretty funny xD

I legitimately am worried for the Mario movie considering Illumination’s track record, I’d have liked it if Dreamworks Animation got the reins. But who knows maybe it’ll be a film you wouldn’t expect Illumination to make.

One thing from the Sing 2 trailer, didn’t bother seeing the film I didn’t care, that stood out to me was that the trainer was a proboscis monkey. As an animal nerd, I thought that was interesting that they used a fairly obscure animal.

The only scene I've watched is the gorilla voiced by Taron Egerton singing "I'm Still Standing". It's probably the main highlight of the film for me.

In regards to the music take that even the editor addressed, there is a franchise that uses licensed music ( that already banged) in a genius ways to further the story and characters, where the praise should also goes to the people that made the movies: Shrek

my friends and i actually watched this movie together pretty recently and we had a pretty decent time, it's nothing special i mean it's an illumination movie but we had fun watching it together. we spent a majority of the movie yelling at Mike and wondering just how much money this movie spent on getting the rights to use all those pop songs lol. we liked most of the characters well enough, like, obviously these movies aren't super good or anything but like- idk we had fun🤷 i would compare sing to a light snack food of a movie, like a rice krispies treat or something.

Honestly, Sing 2 was one of those things where I turned my brain off and mostly enjoyed it when watching it, then I took like 2 seconds to think about it afterward was like "wait what the fuck did I just watch"

As an anime enjoyer, I’m absolutely blown away by your definition of “good animation”. If this shit is badly animated, then holy shit, I’m truly sorry for 99.99% of every other animation ever made.

Funny story: I was super sick at the beginning of the year (not sure if it was THE sickness or just a really bad cold). One morning during the early stages, I woke up around 4-5 AM and felt awful. So I went down to make myself some oatmeal thinking that would make me feel better. During my disillusioned state, I decided to watch the first Sing for whatever reason. I ate my oatmeal, curled up on the couch and brought it up on demand. I didn't even make it five minutes into the film before I turned it off and went back to bed because I started feeling dizzy and nauseous. My body physically couldn't handle this movie.

Despicable me should of ended at two imo. The story was so fucking heart warming and I loved seeing gru get the happy life he deserved. I absolutely despise Despicable me 3 tho because it feels like the most pointless disappointing film I've ever seen in my life. I would of loved if they stuck to the Lucy mom plot stuff cause Gru's brother is such a terrible idea for a character. The Villain tho... he really felt like he had the charm of the first movie. Like you said.. some Illumination movies try to appeal to everyone which means... it doesn't really apply itself towards being a passionate movie.

The thing about Sing is, I can absolutely see the potential. It needed better writing and character arcs. While I do enjoy the music and some of the characters (nothin inherently wrong with furry bait lmao), I do see, thanks to you, the movies' flaws.

I actually liked the sequel even more than the original, which is almost always a rarity for me. The jokes just seemed fresher, and the song choices were catchier, in my opinion.
