One thing that has been doing wonders for my playing together with the slowing down thing (any new exercise or idea I introduce to my drumming I start at 60 bpm and only increase tempo when I know I nail it) is instead of first learning how to do something for a long time and then incorporate it into my playing, I do the opposite. I practice alternating between the new thing and something else, one repetition each. That way I'm already practicing getting "into" and "out of" the new thing from the start and if I need to I can always improve endurance later on. I'm sure a lot of people already do this but it's a realization I came to on my own so I'm sharing it in case anyone else is also stuck in the "Okay, I know I can play this for 10 minutes straight if I have to but I'm having a hard time using it in songs" hole.

Thank you. This will be a great exercise for me to practice. And the reminder to slow my practice down is always very valuable.

I fill in on drums for a swing band once in a while. Always felt my bass drum was sloppy. I'll 100% give this a shot for a while and see if it improves. Thank you.

That is awsome....I have always played rock and country....I was in the marching band so rudiments....are not new...I can play what your playing with quarter notes on the ride....I can play the swing pattern on the ride but combining all of it is going to be fun....thank you for sharing this pattern

For everyone looking for a Rock drumming equivalent to exercise #2: try "Paranoid" from Black Sabbath. Almost all transcriptions got it wrong, it is actually constant 1/8s for the bass drum @ 164bpm - just a few missing here and there. If you slow that down to 75% it is equivalent to triplets @ 80 bpm. It find it easier to practise with a track I can play to. If the target is triplets @ 110 - that is also the original tempo of the song.

You are exactly right with what you are saying about slowing things down and bass drum licks get easier to throw in if you control the slower speeds intentionally

Thanks, this is a good one. Yes to slowing down...I used the beat from Portishead Wandering Star, the triplet kick that crosses the measure, starts on beat 4 so it's ba boom boom ba crack with the first boom on beat 1 if you know what I mean. I had the hardest time getting my right leg to bounce like that for a long time. Also practicing with Reggae beats from Bob Marley albums greatly freed up my right leg to land the kick wherever it needs to go. The effort to first learn to not land a kick on every 1 allowed me to tune my right leg control to a much higher degree. Then the basic Jazz swing beat, plus the hip hop bounce, plus reggae really trains my right leg well. This exercise has a little bit of all those styles in it. Now I'm working on double kick skills and playing beats opposite from my normal right hand setup. Still looking for a new band, a place to set up my kit, but training sitting in chair and slapping thighs with hands or sticks every day, finger and foot calisthenics so I'm ready when the next opportunity opens.

Thanks Stephen! My foots been driving me crazy, i'v been messing around with my pedal trying different cams, footboard length etc but I'm guessing the real problem is just my skill. So I'm trying this exercise out asap!!

So I'm noticing that you're playing heel down. How would this whole thing sound/feel with heel up? Did you make this choice just because you felt like it, or was it because you feel like this pattern works best with Heel Down? And btw: I LOVE what you said about Slowing Down. I tell that to my students ALL THE TIME. I always say: the Key to Playing Fast is Play Slow. Sounds completely counter-intuitive, I know, but 100% true.

I had this same question, actually. The foot technique would look much different, at faster tempos, for heel up (slide technique, heel-toe, etc.)

It seems the slower I go on bass pedal, the harder it is to get the rebound. Been struggling with these triplets for months, hoping it helps me hone in on what is going on

Don't understand why some notes for the kick drum are noted the "x" on the sheet for this exercise. Why some "x", instead of a regular note ? they seem to be played... I'm confused here 😵‍💫 can anyone help please ?

Stephan, I really do appreciate all you do for all of us, but like you said in your intro, you are here for all the self taught drummers I am self taught which means I don’t read any music which means your music stuff you put on the screen means absolutely nothing to me. The only way I can learn is by watching what you do in a very slowed down manner. This lesson confused me because you started out with the bass drum bam bam bam bam etc. and then you changed it about mid lesson. You had the music for us to look at to know what to play, but it meant nothing to me. It just gets me frustrated. Not your fault, my friend, but it just doesn’t work for me.🤷😢
