Bingo! Gores has been a terrible owner…and Bill Davidson was an exceptional owner. One of Gores worst moves was to leave Auburn Hills and literally blow up the building. So many awesome memories in that building and it’s just gone. And now you have to go downtown to see them which is way more inconvenient.
That trade still happens in my opinion because they really didn’t give up anything for sheer a 1st round pick chucky Akins and Lindsey Hunter who signed back with the team a week later
The REAL first crack in that team was letting Ben Wallace walk in free agency to sign a max deal in Chicago. That team was still very good with 4 of the starters, but they lost the heart and soul of that defense after he left. Dumars failing to replace him is in my opinion his biggest blunder. But yes the Billups trade for AI was arguably one of the dumbest trades in NBA history. You trade a floor general PG who has chemistry with everybody on that team for a ball dominant scorer in AI who didn't even want to be there, set Detroit back a decade plus. Good video!
Yep he was the heart and soul of those teams all because we didn't want to pay him 12 million more we don't lose to Cleveland in 07 and probably don't trade Chauncey in 08
i still hate blake for the way the officials allowed him to bully michigan in the ncaa playoffs,, as a pistons fan i still never liked him.. and i loved bill laimbeer.
That 5 year span picking 7-9... Too bad to be good. Too good to be bad. Also can I say how big a mistake it was when they had Prince and Knight and played at the palace... I saw no marketing for that. What a waste.
It was making very, very bad draft picks. Pistons could not land a draft pick to save their lives. If there was a bust in the top 15 you could guarantee that the Pistons would end up with that player.
Nah that Blake Griffen trade is why we suck today..... that pick was SGA he had be slated in that spot all yr.... they should have kept the assets and drafted SGA
Ok…picking Darko was a horrible move. Then as the Going to Work Pistons started getting older…Dumars announced to the league that he needed to trade the core of the team. So everyone assumed there was no value and they were offered garbage offers, and Joe took them up on it. Then Gores buys the team and it’s been garbage since
The pistons have been dysfunctional ever sonce mr Davidson died. The common denominator through all the coaches, players and gm's that created this culture of failure, has been tom gores #selltheteam
Tbh Pistons had one of the worst lottery/draft luck in history - not only they slid down in the lottery more times than any team in the last 20 years, they also couldn't pick a decent guy until Cade...
As A Pistons fan since my preteen days (Bad Boy Era) this video just reminded how screwed up the past 20 years have been since the 2004 title ......Damn I need therapy now LOL
Bill Davidson owned that team until 2009 when he died, and had become great at picking front office talent. That’s where all of this started. Good ownership does matter.
But in all honesty more of these videos compared to your first. This is actually interesting and a good watch. I’ll give you a sub and hope to see some more good videos and the channel grow
I’ll never forget the day I heard Dumars made that trade…and worse than losing Billups…was getting a washed up disgruntled Iverson in return. They’ve been crap as an organization ever since that trade.
High school michigander me loved this group. When Dumars gutted the team, I stopped watching the NBA for so long I barely remembered some of the stupid moves made over the years since the magical 04 season. The blackouts from bs regional sports companies like Bailey's killed my ability to watch Pistons, Red Wings, and Tigers, so not having access didn't help. Nuggets are my G league parent team and I get to watch more of their games than I get to see my local squad.
Ah, yes, the blame game and how to play it for RU-vid points. Chauncy approached Dumars and asked to be traded back to his home ground, Denver. That's how it happened along with the illness and then death of the previous Pistons owner Bill Davidson. Okay, now go ahead and point fingers.
Part #1. Bill Davidson died Part #2. Fat-man-Grundy was put in charge. And sure, Darko, Rodney White, etc. I get it. But really Part #1 and Part #2. Weaver had to sort that money / draft pick dumpster fire out. And right when he did it they canned him. Williams is a good coach, but when you have that rotating roster you're just going to lose, IDGAF who you are. Pop/Phil/Red F-ing Auerbach couldn't win with that line up.
you have no idea what you are talking about,, the pistons didn't allow easy layups,, pab's like jordan didn't like that, but fouls are a PART OF THE GAME,, when it comes to cheap shots the PISTONS received way more than they ever dished out..look at what 280 lbs pos karl malone did to 180 lbs isiah,, purposely elbowing him to the head INSTEAD OF GOING FOR THE BALL,, RESULTING IN 45 STITCH'S ,, look at robert parish attacking bill laimbeer with numerous punch's in a play off game AND DIDN'T EVEN GET TOSSED FROM THE GAME,,,I'VE WATCHED EVeRY SINGLE PISTONS GAME RELIGIOUSLY and i know for a fact that you are full of it..here's an idea,, GET A CLUE BEFORE SPEAKING !!
The wildest shit is these GM's get paid hundreds of thousands of dollars and the best they can do is put together a team that gets like 15 wins? I know its not 2k but my god...
Detroit air-balled that draft. Melo, Wade, or Bosh would have been justified picks. Wade could have been 6th man and for small ball lineups and would have naturally replaced Rip. Melo for offense to make up for the lack of O from Ben. Bosh could have played F or C and didn't mind playing 2nd fiddle on offense. That said, Detroit could turn things around with a stable front office and trying to build things up through the draft like OKC and the Spurs.
When Tom Gore bought the Pistons he not into the team. When a rich person buy a team just to say they have one. Look at how many coaches we had since his ownership.
I disaree, my guy KCP fumbled the bag big time. “On June 23, 2017, Caldwell-Pope was suspended for two games without pay by the NBA for pleading guilty to operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated. On July 7, 2017, the Pistons renounced the rights to Caldwell-Pope, making him an unrestricted free agent.” This tweet is from July 7, simply shocking. x.com/JakeLFischer/status/883384868612096001
3 set backs that made the BIGGEST DIFFERENCE since blowing up the champion roster: #3 - Brandon Jennings injury. Cooled off after viral 50pt rookie game. Came here, and not only got Red Hot again, he was REALLY putting it together. Lead Pistons to 15 consecutive wins. Then he blew his Achilles... Career over. Coulda lead to something special. #2 - added Villanueva and Ben Gordon. Charlie V sucked. Then one day on Raptors he erupted for 100pts against the Pistons. Dumars got a twinkle in his eye. Threw the ENTIRE BANK at him, AND 6th man winner Ben Gordon! Neither did a single thing, got cut from rotation, and both got max paychecks to ride the bench.🤦♂️ #1 - Josh Smith Another max signing. He HATED IT here so much that when team ran a play, he'd cut in front, steal a ass meant for teammate and shoot. Did I mention He was dead last in league in fg%? With nobody wanting him, let alone willing to trade, we cut him immediately... and had to continue to pay his max salary (against the cap) for 5 MORE YEARS!!!
@@nathanlawson313 Great points! Brandon Jennings is a huge “what could have been”, he really was never the same after the achilles injury. I liked Josh Smith as a kid (because of his dunk on Najera), even though he was never good at threes. I feel like he got complacent after earning a big contract. Bad fit on the Pistons + lost passion for the game.
If the Pistons would've drafted Carmelo Anthony, Wade or Bosh in the 2003 NBA Draft instead of Darko, Larry Brown wouldn't have played any of them that much because the Pistons were a veteran-laden team. Remember when Larry Brown was the head coach of the USA Olympic basketball team in 2004? He had a 19-year-old LeBron James on the team and rarely played him to the disgust of the team and the nation. Brown never liked playing young players. James was the best player the NBA has ever seen at his age. I don't think he was the best player on the USA team at the time, but he was the most talented.
