Could you imagine playing Mario brothers, and instead of having to find power-ups or mushrooms, you just sit there for 10 seconds and you grow back into 'big' Mario?

That would still be far better than searching for shrooms every time

I do feel some games handle regen health well, Halo is an obvious example since the aliens use projectile weapons instead of hitscan with the exception of the Sniper. I also feel like partially regenerating health can also work. All though honestly my big issue is just hitscan weapons, because regen health and hitscan weapons on default difficulty is at least easy to manage while with hitscan weapons with finite health can actually really get grating because you can't reliably avoid damage and you are basically a tank that need fuel charge ups. Probably my biggest pet peeve is when you have to memorize every enemy location because you are trying to kill every enemy before every enemy hits you to minimize health lost. As much as Last of Us gets bashed, at least that game has a stealth element and you aren't supposed to be tanking lots of bullets in that game.

Yeah this is one way to avoid the health pack problem but a far better way is simply health items that the player can carry and use whenever they need it

Finals hit me hard. But now that I have free time I plan on starting back up. Have the scripts done for about 5 videos.

FPS gamers being used to the regenerating health is probably one of the biggest reasons why Overwatch (an fps without regenerating health) is so frustrating. FPS vets will often try to play Overwatch as though they have regenerating health, but end up getting frustrated when that results in them dying a lot. They aren't used to the concepts of playing more cautiously while on low health, needing to search the map for a healthpack (or a healer) after taking damage, or needing to fervently _avoid_ taking damage in the first place.

I think the "FPS vets" you're referring to are not actually FPS vets but today's kids who grew up with Call of Duty and console shooters like Halo. Actual FPS vets played (or play) old school shooters like Half life 1, Quake, Team Fortress clasic, cs 1.6, Doom I and II among other similar shooters from the 90s and early 2000s and almost all (if not all) of those games required you to pick up heal items from the floor to regenerate your health, shield or armor.

What are your specs, it seems like in the video that you put your games either at lower settings or a low resolution.

I can actually run these games on max but prefer the higher frame rate with some shooters.

I mean if you like arena shooters then i understand why its bad but if you like "realistic" games its good for those. Regeneration is the perfect balance of gameplay and realistic

That part with Spec Ops being shown when talking about regening health. That first fire fight has the sand always end that way. But also, many of the fire fights in it are hard. Even more so if you decide to play the game on FUBAR.

Health regeneration is not really a sin if you know how to use it properly.

The demographics have changed. That's the main reason why reg. health has been implemented in most modern shooters. Gaming was originally a hobby for the more intelligent parts of the population. Now it has become mainstream and therefore the mechanics have been adapted to accommodate the masses.

I agree 100% look at Dark Souls. You are either severely rewarded or punished for your actions.

While I agree with your message, one of your examples isn't that good. At 4:50 you mentioned how in recent Battlefield titles the time to kill is pretty low, but I'd argue that it has always been low. It has even gone up in recent times from what I can see. In Battlefield 2 for example (a game without regenerating health), you could kill an enemy with around 1-5 shots, depending on your aim.
