You're not wrong though, devas are divas. Lord Indra, King of the Devas in Hinduism, once tried to drown an entire village because they didn't honor him in a festival. That was a really accurate statement
@@jamesloganhowlettwolverine1553 Even according to vedic texts and mahabharata. Indra was a jealous, power hungry and lustful being, who'd run to the higher gods / rsis (people trying to attain enlightenment) for help against the asuras, and otherwise be a constant pr*ck to everyone
Oh man when I watched naruto I noticed a lot of parallels to Hinduism. Makes sense that it was based on Buddhism since both religions originated in India and share many beliefs. It would be really cool to learn more about how Buddhism changed over time, over different regions and as a fusion of many cultures.
The Buddhism that went to Japan is the Chinese version though, so it feels kinda different than what you find in India, just like the Japanese curry that went to Japan through Britain so looks quite very different than Indian curry.
@@deioped, it may be different but the core is same , but I love how budhism mixes into a native religion without destroying it , so Japanese budhism has a lot of elements of shinto, and some Chinese and Korean religions
@@deioped The Chinese Buddhism was based on the translation of Sanskrit text to Chinese by the Chinese pilgrim Fa Xi'an who was a first Chinese monk to visit India back in 330 CE. All forms of Buddhism have a origin in India. It's just that Buddhism has been adapted to different cultures in different forms.
"You could be forced to watch a 15 second RU-vid ad and then get hit with another 15 second ad." Now that's just fucked up. What could anyone have possibly done to deserve THAT kind of punishment?
The Buddhist references in Naruto really need their own video series because there are indeed a LOT of them, especially to mikkyo teachings. Mikkyo (密教) refers to Vajrayana practices found primarily in the Shingon sect but also found in the Tendai and Kegon sects as well as Shugendo practices.
Interestingly, the Asura and Devas fight constant wars, because there is huge tree the size of the universe. Its roots are in Asura territory, but because Deva live above, they get the fruits. So it’s not jealousy on the Asura’s part, they got the bad end of the deal. Now where have we heard this before? Two groups of supernatural people, fighting against each other over some damned tree, and one of those groups is called Asura. Aesura. Aesir. Oh yes, some scholars posit a relationship between Buddhism and Germanic Polytheism, because they both come from the ancient Indo-European religion. Nepal and the North of the Indian Subcontinent were settled by the Indo-Aryans.
Technically the aesir and vanier weren't fighting over a tree. If I remember they were fighting because it started with freya and her magic. Also you confused buddhism with Hinduism. The devas and asuras roles on buddhism is a bit different. Other European religions have references of a divine tribal war, and names like devas. That's because sanskrit is one of the original languages of the world. I don't know if aryan was a actual racial* group that existed or the right name to use for such a group. I know Indians especially in the mondern like using the term.
@@happymate8943 Yes, Aryans were a people group that originated in Iran. 'Iran' literally means 'land of the Aryans'. Notice how similar the words sound. Iran was the ancient name for what westerners would call Persia for thousands of years (even going back to Ancient Greek times). But the last Shah changed the name back to Iran. During the Indo-European migrations the Aryans moved into Europe and established the people groups there. Along with bringing their language which was the progenitor for many modern European languages.
@@J3diMindTrix Sorry I meant racial group. I remember looking it up, and it says it was ethnicity/culture. In other words it was iran or arya culture group. It was until the 1950s were people started considering it as a genetic racial thing Also the language you're talking about is sanskrit.
It's pretty much confirmed at this point that the ancient Germanic religion and also the Greek/ Mediterranean mythology comes from indo European settlers, that explains the links with Hinduism and also to a certain extent Mazdyanism and therefore even ancient Hebrew oral tradition.
This reminds me of a story I read in Chinese mythology. There was a Buddhist family that was very devote. The father was so devote that when he died, he was carried to Buddhist heaven by heavenly cranes. After his death, the son leaves for the traditional mourning period and leaves the mother with some money to give to monks that might visit. Unfortunately without any men to keep her devoted, she quickly strayed from the virtuous path and sin like crazy. Like she did every kind of sin you can think of. She got to taste meat for the first time and killed dogs for dinner, she refused to give any of the money her son left her for the monks nor any food (except one time when she gave her scraps to a monk, condemning him for hell too). As her final sin, when her son returned, she lied to him about whether or not she gave out the money he left her for the monks. When she died, she was condemned to Buddhist hell where she has to kneel on a bed of nails forever. After her death, the son changed his name and became a monk. He was so devote that he gained the ability to visit Buddhist heaven while alive. Unfortunately when he got there, he found out that his mother isn't there, and did everything he could at first to find her, and then try to save her soul. He even convince Buddha to visit hell with released a whole bunch of souls at once. However, he came too late and the mother was now serving a new sentence in Gakido, always begging for food on earth but having it turn to ash upon touching her lips. In the end, the son saved her soul by throwing the first ever festival to honor the dead, and after she ate for the first time, she reincarnated as a dog and was treated fairly by her owners until her son came to bring her to heaven to reunite with her husband.
There's a mountain in East Java, Indonesia named Semeru. named after the mythical Sumeru, in early century of Indonesian history, Hindu-Buddhism is the major religion and influenced almost every aspect of the people of Nusantara's (old Indonesia name) life.
@@davidwagner6116 This is dumb. Read history. Sumeru is derived from mount Meru in Buddhist mythology. Thus, many Hindu/Buddhist cultures named or dedicated places to Sumeru. Java obviously having Sumeru and Cambodia having built Angkor Wat which is modeled after Mount Meru
I love how the more Naruto continued, the more it was being revealed that it wasnt a tale of Ninja, but a tale of the origins of Buddhism and the compassion such a following can teach. I also love how just like the deities within eastern religions, it was always a fractured story of a greater whole that was being pieced back together to reveal the truth of everything.
I really liked this one. One can be familiar with so much Far Eastern content and never understand why it's made like that or why it is proposed over and over, as if it were part of something more than the producer's/writer imagination.
I looked up the Bardo Thodol, or Tibetan Book of the Dead, just to find out when this came into Buddhism. It was revealed around 1342, but supposedly written much earlier. This is interesting, as Dante's Divine Comedy was published in 1320. Either they have a common influence, a story that was floating around the Silk Road at that time, or somehow Dante made it all the way to Tibet in a few decades. Hmmmmm ....
Bardo thodol is a guideline for the dying person. Guru Padmasambhava is author of that book so he is 7th century master later he hidden away that book it is called Terma.
There's no way Dante could have heard of the Buddhist myth. Human tend to think alike, just like pyramids were both built in Egypt and mesoamerica but obviously the two culture never met eachother.
It's funny that people don't see divine inspiration or muse to be the most simple and logical answer to stuff like this. There's a lot of unreliable narration and human error in these writings but there is an element of truth to them. The dogma of science has separated us very far from our spiritual roots
That is because Japanese Buddhism is Mahayana Buddhism, along with some of it's own local cultural influences. The same could be said for Thai Theravedan Buddhism or Chinese Pure Land Buddhism.
Gakidō, the realm of hungry ghosts, has hungry ghosts, although they are also referred as preta. One of the major events that is about giving offerings to hungry ghosts is the Hungry Ghost Festival. Hungry ghosts also appear in Hinduism, Taoism, and even Chinese Folk Religion,
I didn't start off interested in Asian (Japanese to be specific) folklore and history. As in, I normally wouldn't go and look for videos on these subjects. Until I came across a Linfamy video and since then I've been very interested. Thank you Linfamy.
I am curious about the Zoroastrian Influences on the Buddhist Concept of the 6 Paths. Zoroastrianism's Founder basically grew up in a priestly family of a society that followed an Iranian Religion that was very similar to Northern Vedic Religions, which was one of the main foundations for Hinduism and I think for Buddhism as well. Just like Hindus and Buddhists have a concept of Devas and Asura, Zoroastrianism has the concept of Daeva and Ahura, where Ahura means lord and Ahura Mazda is the wise lord, and Daeva are seen as demons or at least false gods. Obviously, this is the exact opposite of the Upper Realms. Zoroastrianism has a deep concept of heaven and hell. So I'm curious how much of that Zoroastrian Influence seeped it's way into Buddhism. After all, Siddhartha Gautama would have lived around the time of the rise of the Persian Empire
@@ussinussinongawd516 Yeah, but when you believe in reincarnation and you start concepts that are more hellish and heavenly, it sounds like you were influenced by people who believe in heaven and hell
Buddhism likely has influence from Zoroastrianism because of cultural trade coming from India and traveling up through Pakistan. There's an ancient City around Pakistan long ago (I forgot the name of) that had Christians, Buddhists, and Muslims all living and trading
@@tommynobaka Yeah. There's been a bunch of academic study which has shown that the original texts of Mazda worship that later became Zoroastrian are actually not Vedic at all, and their point of origin is totally separate. However, the religion changed over time as it came more into contact with others, as you say--for example, when it started to be threatened by Christianity, the cosmology developed to have a more vivid and structured depiction of the afterlife, sort of as a response to the "arguments" put forward by that faith.
There’s a game called Rain World which has a lot of Buddhist symbolism with stuff like how you can get gain and lose karma and how the story revolves around everything being stuck in a cycle of death and rebirth. It mixes Buddhist symbolism with a post apocalyptic world and is a really cool game overall.
I'd just like to be THAT weeaboo and point out that the Six Paths are also prevalent in Bleach: Jigokudo = Hell -> ghouls / demons like what Szayel becomes. Gakido = Hueco Mundo -> Hollows like Ulquiorra. Chikushodo = Beast Realm -> Beast-like beings like Sajin and his grandfather. Ashurado = Wandenreich -> Quincies like Yhwach. Nindo = World of the Living. Tendo = Soul Society / Royal Society -> Shinigami, Nobles, etc.
@@YuYu-qs8mz Well yeah Szayel was a Hollow, but just like Linfamy said, none of the six paths are eternal. After Szayel died as a Hollow he was reincarnated into Hell. And not quite sure what you're asking as far as Grimmjow goes.. I mean, he's a Hollow. Not much else to say.
It makes sense he can pull souls out because Nindo doesn’t just mean the realm of humans but the realm of mortality, so he can pluck out one’s mortality.
Don’t forget the final path. Rather outer path. I guess it’s a reference to the Buddha who attained enlightenment and yeeted off from the cycle of death and rebirth. Which explains which he can resurrect people.
Oddly enough, the abilites of Jigokudo/Naraka Path is probably one of the pretty useful one, since it can be used to revive someone, like your ally or something. Or sacrifice your own life to revive another.
So much explained and thanks for it, Lin. The pulling your soul out thing is a nod to his-Masashi Kishimoto's- publisher, who loves the quantity of the work far more than its quality. Personally, I'm a lot more like Sorachi Hideaki; "I'm just a monkey in a tree, why must I leave?"
A lot of you guys are forgetting that the point of the Buddha's teachings is to stop the cycle of rebirth. Being born in a higher realm as a Deva really isn't that good, as mentioned in the video, as you forget to practice the Dhamma/Dharma and accumulate virtue. The thing about karma is it doesn't bear fruit/"happen" immediately after, but sometimes many rebirths later. A hell being suffers from being in constant pain, while a Deva suffers when they are about to die, realizing they wasted their long "life" doing only pleasure pursuits. That's why being in Samsara is bad. One has to either become a Buddha or vow to become a Bodhisattva. What is a Bodhisattva? Japanese Buddhism or Chan/Zen Buddhism is a part of Mahayana Buddhism. In Mahāyāna Buddhism life in this world is compared to people living in a house that is on fire. People take this world as reality pursuing worldly projects and pleasures without realizing that the house is on fire and will soon burn down (due to the inevitability of death). A bodhisattva is one who has a determination to free sentient beings from samsara and its cycle of death, rebirth and suffering. This type of mind is known as the mind of awakening (bodhicitta). Bodhisattvas take bodhisattva vows in order to progress on the spiritual path towards buddhahood. Mahāyāna Buddhism encourages everyone to become bodhisattvas and to take the bodhisattva vows. With these vows, one makes the promise to work for the complete enlightenment of all sentient beings by practicing the six perfections. Indelibly entwined with the bodhisattva vow is merit transference (pariṇāmanā). Bodhisatvas manifest where they are needed in many forms. They might be bums or babies, friends or strangers, teachers, firemen or used car salesmen. They might be you. Whenever needed help is given without selfish attachment, there is the hand of the bodhisattva. When we see and hear the suffering of others and respond to that suffering, we are the hands of the bodhisattva.
5:38, he looks a little like god Brahma in hinduism. But he has four faces and he is known as the creator of the world. In hinduism Deva also means tge gods.

Hey linfamy, my favourite touhou character Youmu has her spellcards named after the 6 realms of Buddhism So it was very interesting watching this video what each of her abilities meant :D
I suppose reincarnation is much more preferable to a Neverending Heaven or a Neverending Hell; after a while, repetition just becomes torture. Still, there might be a lot to be said for just not existing once life is over.
I knew Naruto was absolutely jam-packed with Buddhist references and was very Japanese in its identity, but it's only years after mostly grew out of it that I've realized how deep it goes. Same is true for Bleach, but I actually like it even more as a 20-something than I did as a freshman in college.
The description of beings in gakido made me think of gaki from nioh. The "do" i bushido means path or way. Gakido must mean gaki's path. It all makes sense
One day you'll see that you've only ever been watching the same story, over and over. Naruto vs Sasuke Goku vs vegeta Just the classic stories of the red and blue oni.. over and over, with different art. It's really pretty awesome when you think about it
Now I know this path exists, I need to escape the cycle but I will end up in the purgatory instead, well! Better than stuck in a cycle over and over again. Don't you get tired of reincarnation? Sure you can possibly get reincarnated to the other world but that doesn't mean your god won't be there watching you doing crazy sh*t, like exploding a castle each day with your green tracksuit guy.
This could become very helpful, I played a lot with a mixture of biblical, Japanese, Persian, norse and urban fantasy in the first volume of my trilogy, now that I'm planning the second volume I needed a place to put the son and send the father to go save him and the 9 realms around igdrasil or seven stages of Dante's inferno are just used too often... I was looking for a new level design... I like this...
Remember, you only have one life, unlike in Hinduism your soul does die, when it does depends on branch of Buddhism (alongside the physical body in Theravada, 49 days after death in Tibetan Buddhism and 11-13 years postmortem in Vietnamese Buddhism
When I saw the link between Naruto Pain 6 Paths and Buddhism, I was like "😯". But I already know the things taken from Asian culture and assimilated into it ☺
