Corruption in judging or preparation (like drug doping) is one of the saddest aspects of competitive sports. We all dream of a world of total fairness, but that, sadly, is often not the case. It breaks my heart. At least the Canadians got a gold medal eventually. Eternal shame on those who rigged the outcome behind the scenes ...
I do like how these skaters, at least the Canadian ones, emphasized that it wasn't about the skaters but about the judges. It always angers me when people sling mud at Sotnikova for her 2014 gold when she almost certainly had no say in the matter except for her performance on the ice. Get angry at the judges, but leave the skaters alone.
Except Adelina was kind of rude to Yuna. And leaving when Yuna began to speak in interview room right after she won the gold medal? It didn’t help her case at all. And when she said she could have a comeback and take over again? Yikes, we don’t like to see that compared to Yuna.
Well at least Sotnikova should have given some respect to Yuna, at the press conference when it was Yuna's time for interview she just walked out without even saying why she is leaving. She's rude.
I was in the 3rd grade and living in Salt Lake at the time of the 2002 olympics. I still remember watching this program on TV with my mom and we were both so furious when the Canadian team got silver instead of gold, we *screamed*. It was all anyone in the city could talk about for the next few days, my teacher even had to rant about it in class.

Why don’t they do the same thing for Yuna. It’s been proven already that the results in Sochi were absurd. Why don’t they just give gold to Yuna and Adelina. Then silver to Carolina.
the way the American media treated the Russian skaters like criminals was appalling. they turned this competition into a literal Cold War. first, with the accident that took place during warm-up: they all blamed the Russian skaters when it was very clear that Jamie was the one that collided against Anton. and then, they purposely ignore the fact that there are TWO programs; in every documentary they mention the minor flaws in the long program of the Russian skaters; but they never mention how flawlessly they performed in the short one. go watch their routine here on RU-vid, and you'll see it's majestic. it was painful to see how the American media ruined their legitimate victory. and it's pathetic that Jamie and David are still MILKING this non-story after so many years, and after eventually getting their PITY gold medal.
I agree with what you're saying about how the russian skaters may have been treated unfairly as none of this was their fault, but you can't ignore the fact that a judge went on the record as saying she felt pressured by her federation. They left the result as a tie, because that's essentially what it was with the ordinals when you don't count the french judge. I think the real travesty here is that the sport really didn't do enough to address the specific concerns that led to this fiasco. Instead, they gave us a new scoring system that didn't address the real issues that led to this problem with corrupt judges and federations.
It was very inspiring to watch and hear how the skaters pushed back when the media tried to create a narrative of in-fighting. There is so much corruption at the top of the Olympic Games - bribery and such. The saddest part is that the few people who are greedy and corrupt ruin it for the athletes who dedicate a lifetime to pursuing Olympic dreams. Very sad.

I legit get chills every time I watch the TRUE gold medal winners, the Canadians, I swear every single damn time there’s a huge corruption scandal it always ends up benefiting the Russians.
Could it be the other way around? How could the canadians surpass the chinese when in fact the chinese had more speed, power, not to mention transitions and the canadians, jamie smiling... Lol.. So whos the corrupt now? The russians? Well they were always on top, covering all the criteria i mentioned not to mention their elegance..

The sad thing Russia has cheated soooooooooo many times in the summer and Winter Olympics that if you listen Russia actually isn’t even allowed to compete it’s a collection of Russian athletes under the ROC.
Not only Russia. I believe in 2002 Russians should take the gold in pairs. They had harder programs, better quality, basics, better edges, flow etc. Making mistakes not always means losing in figure skating. Difficulty of elements, quality of execution and artistry matters too. They definitely won SP. Long might be more questionable but overall I would put them first anyway. They didn't need any help from the judges. 2014 ladies event is a completely different story. Adelina didn't deserve gold there.
@@mariabe1568 That's the unfortunate part of corruption; it lessens what the athlete actually accomplished. You think just anybody can bribe a figure skating judge to make them a gold medalist? Obviously not, they are still incredibly skilled. Being beaten in 4 of the last 5 meetings though, obviously Russian officials felt pair did need an illegal advantage, and they certainly didn't skate a clean program. I never did like the 6.0 system, especially the "artistry" portion, as it was most routinely used to inflate scores and fix positions. But in 2014, what might have been Sotnikova winning 3rd thanks to technical bonuses was a 6-point berth between her and Kim which made the inflated voting so incredibly obvious (plus the aftermath). Thing is, Americans, French and particularly Russians have been veryguilty of politicizing and rigging the sport, and more often than not Canadians are the victim (perennial silver medalists) as we have been competitive for a fairly long time. Previous skating powers like Austria and Sweden have basically fallen off the map, and others such as China, Japan and Korea didn't really start to get competitive until the late 90s/early 2000s. Sometimes for Canada it's a legitimate choke, but too often it's skewed judging. I was honestly stunned when Virtue/Moir didn't lose to the French pair in 2018 despite having the superior program.
@@chriss1686 VM should win in 2018 by far but also in 2014 imo. I don't really agree that Canadians are always the victims though. It's still powerful federation and their skaters are more priviliged than most (representing smaller feds). Most people remember patrick chan and some of his dubious victories and scores (even though he was an exellent skater and deserved many of his accomplishments). There was even a term 'chanflation' because of how he was judged. On the other hand it's peak hypocrisy that his scores were called out by people associated with us or rus feds.
@@mariabe1568 Hrm, I guess when considering small nations, yes, Skate Canada is quite a strong organization. But you should look it up. In my lifetime I remember Manly, Orser, Stojko, S/P and V/M off the top of my head. It's also not that unreasonable considering after Russia and United States, we've both medalled the most times (disproportionately large silver and bronze count, just like USSR/Russia's disproportionate gold and silver count) and have participated 24 times, among the highest. So it stands to reason that Canada would routinely be the ones getting screwed out of medals. Can't be proven though, obviously, but I think with a bit of research you'd probably be convinced too.
Can you do Worlds 2001 from Vancouver next? You know, when David and Jaimie were voted higher against Anton and Elena? Interesting that was swept under the mat..
If they were not Canadians, the IOC would never have let them tie for the championship. Injustices are everywhere in Olympic history, but the IOC has never changed the results unless it was an American or a Canadian who was unfairly treated.
Media pressure and alcohol changed the voting system and its result - pitiful. I would call a scandal that the ISU leadership succumbed to these two factors. But there is nothing bad that would not work out for good because the new grading system is fairer and more objective than the old one, although of course much less spectacular.
This whole thing made the sport look bad. I think that it made the Canadian team look bad. I love both teams. The Canadian team kept saying it’s nothing personal. If you were the Russian team you couldn’t take it as anything, but personal.

Under the current CoP, the Russians definitely would have won - they had a much more difficult program than the Canadians (in terms of transitions etc). Perhaps if the Canadians had stuck w/ their other planned program (which did have more difficult transitions/footwork etc) it would have been more fair, but the Canadians had trouble skating that one cleanly.
The Canadians skate was flawless, the Russians skate had so many holes in it I thought it was Swiss cheese, they did not have a clean skate. The video shows both

I watched this whole thing as I watched the Olympics that year. I was overjoyed at how well they skated and then furious at the judging. It was ALWAYS corrupt and we all knew it but no one ever did anything about it!! ☮️💖🏳️🌈🇨🇦
I remember watching this program, and believed Canada got robbed of the gold medal, but impressed at how the world rallied around them, pressuring an investigation. Because of the scandal, I'd hoped Canada would face off against Russia in ice hockey, they would be tasting blood. The Russians ready to show the Canadians who's the boss, that there's only one gold medal, the Canadians determined to avenge Sale and Peltier.
They got the medal but I feel for them their National Anthem was not played & they could not celebrate at the Olympics. That's all a participant's dream of.
Well another repeat at the 2014 Sochi Olympics and Russia again. The Russian skating federation (or whatever they call it at Russia) should be ashamed.
I prefer the Russians. The Canadians were excellent, but the Russians were sensational poetry on ice. The fall was only a small thing to consider in the overall skating quality and ability. Had I been a judge I would have given it to the Russians.

I only saw their program later after the judging. The Canadians had skated when I watched it and they were questioning the judging. I loved Elena and Anton’s program. People later said they were skating a new program while the Canadian’s were skating an old program they had been performing for three years. Definitely Elena and Anton’s was harder. I always loved their skating.

Fair enough! That's probably why when it comes to the reporting, the only opinions voiced outside of Canada aren't strictly journalistic. Also, you'd be hard-pressed not to feel a nationalistic streak when it comes to sports reporting, especially when it comes to the Olympics.
I'm American and remember being shocked the Russians got the nod over Team Canada. It's nice David pointed out the Russian skaters themselves did nothing wrong. Great sportsmanship!

I think it was 1992 where Elvis Stojko landed the first quad in Olympic history. The Russia Ilya Kulick actually fell down in his free skate but won the Gold on "Artistic Merit " To which Elivs replied, "I don't know how to skate like a girl"
I was wondering about the 2002 Salt Lake City Olympic skating scandal but in Pyeongchang in South Korea in 2018 I think that Alina Zagitova was probably robbed of the gold medal so it would be Kaetlyn Osmond of Canada winning gold for Canada, Evegina Medvedeva of Russia with the silver and Satoko Miyahara of Japan with the bronze so it would have been the first gold medal in women’s figure skating for Canada since the late Barbara Ann Scott in 1948 in St. Moritz, Switzerland.
I'm sorry, but with that flawless routine, Canada still sucked. 4th place at best, gold is highway robbery. That was the most boring gold performance I've ever seen

I dont think its fixed. The media is making it look like its fixed with their bias in toe. Search the real result of the event with points. The russians were ahead of the canadians in artistry, skills, chereography, speed, and evrything in between. Canadians? What are they good at? Drama? Cheating? Politicising?

It's definitely a sport. an activity involving physical exertion and skill in which an individual or team competes against another or others for entertainment. Does hours of practice involving physical exertion ✓ having a lot of skills✓ compete vs others ✓ for entertainment✓ how is it not a sport than?
@@qc__deak136 sure, it has a lot of components that you would think make it a sport.. but its missing one crucial factor, violence. it needs more violoence. maybe implement skates with knives on? or lasers. or go to australia in the winter, if you fall through the ice you will get eaten by sharks.
@@qc__deak136 The reasons you've provided are not why figure-skating is a sport. Sports are sports because of their formats and the format of an artistic-sport is having a code of points, standardised scoring system and compulsory/technical/composition (the jargon varies from sport to sport) requirements to showcase in each exercise (the objective aspect). If you remove so much as one of those three components you no longer have a sport but (competitive) physical activity. This is why competitive dance is not a sport, but dancesport is. Competitive dance has none of the above, dancesport has all them. Similarly It's also why up until recently cheerleading was not a sport, but the as per it's Olympic bid, the ICU have since adopted said format. Hours of practice involving physical exertion is not what makes a sport because if that were the case then a sport would only be considered one once it becomes _difficult enough;_ which is not true. Whether it is an under 5s football match, a recreational game between friends in the park or the World Cup a sport is *ALWAYS* a sport. Also sports are not solely for the purpose of entertainment; their primary purpose is competition. if you were to invent a new sport but it was only participated in by yourself and your network for your own enjoyment, not the public's, for as long as it met the necessary criteria then it would still be a sport.
