To me Duane was the best guitar player ever. His tone and phrasing is unmatched to this day. It's not how fast one can play, it's what emotions one can evoke with the each note, and phrase. However, he could be burn it up when he wanted, and almost no real effects or pedals, or overdubs. And in my opinion he is unmatched on slide. They broke he mold with Duane.

I forgot to mention Duane played slide with his fingers. No pick. He used other fingers of his right hand to mute the surrounding strings.

The greats all had their own sound. Clapton often is very technical. Hendrix rarely ever played the exact same notes for the parti ular song. Some say he was a bit loose, not a bad thing. Duane Allman taught Clapton and Hendrix among others different "licks" and how to achieve a particular sound. He told Hendrix to think of his guitar as a piano while using the slide the technique, and to hit piano notes and pitch's. But who's the best of the three? Or any other great guitarist? They weren't teaching Duane about the guitar. However every great has his own unique style and sound. So just go with what ever blows your back man!

I love the way teachers say a deceased guitarist "does" something as if they're still alive, because in a way they really are. They live on in the music.

Duane was the BEST. I saw the ABB at the Filmore East when I was really young and didn’t even know who they were. I was blown away by Duane’s heart and soul in his performance. A few years later my friend played “One Way Out” for me and I jumped up and realized who they were. Duane was gone …

Duane I believe was the most expressive player of his time kind of went with his personality; vibrant, passionate with tons of energy that the rest of the ABB fed off his passion and he made them all play better or in sync mode.

well said, I sometimes find it difficult to find the right words to describe why Duane & the ABB were so iconic..you nailed it about Duane..really the 2 biggest reasons for the success of the ABB, Duane's slide & soulful emotive lead performances, and of course Baby Brother Gregg's vocals, one of the best white blues singers of the past 50 yrs. rest on Brother Duane & Brother Gregg..

Duane died in 1971, age 24, motorcycle crash. In 2003, Rolling Stone rated him the second best guitar player ever. Now, we all know that is subjective and not a fact, but it is extremely telling and impressive that he would be rated one of the greatest ever. Love his style and now he is reunited with Gregg in heaven.

@dogfacedboy6947

Playing the same note in two different places can also lead directly to a "pedal tone" type of lick. No, Joey S. Bach didn't have a pedal to do it.... A "Pedal tone" means playing that same note in one place and having the alternating notes creep around on ya - it can be a higher note getting higher, a lower note getting lower, or the note can be lower or higher but moving by scale degree (even chromatically!) to the unison thing. Extra points on your chart if you start with ONE note being the pedal tone, moving the other note towards the unison but as soon as it gets to the next-over chord tone set THAT as the new pedal tone that the other notes then bounce off of. A) This kinda stuff is really hard to do initially, so start with a little bitsy melodic fragment of 8 notes and move the sequence through the scale(s) - the same _directional_ melodic movements as far as where the ups go and where the downs go _within_ each little bibbet, but altering the half-step and whole-step intervals to fit the whole kaboodle within one diatonic scale. A REAL GREAT WAY of breaking down the outer line of defense is to use open strings as your pedal tones, you already know how to (sorta) do this on a single string. Open string, fretted note, open string, next fretted note up, open string, next note up, yar yar yar. Now FINGERS... B) Besides being as insanely hard as you want to make them, this kind of exercise is also insanely FUN and can lead to all sort of musical discoveries, about harmony, tension/release, how to count musical phrases, how to drop the rhythmic count intentionally so you can catch it BACK, later... This is WAY up there in terms of "lock me in a closet with my guitar for six months, slide pizzas under the door" type of thing; you can get way, way gone here with this type of thing IYKWIM. It is also a powerful tool for music composition, you hears these ones everywhere. Because besides being an exercise - C) You are also playing MUSIC. I really think approaching every exercise as being _musical_ makes you get better faster, and if your exercises aren't fun and aren't doing exactly THAT - you need to write yourself some better exercises. D) Urp! This went kinda... long on me, please don't read it, and don't follow it to invent some toothsome and ballsy exercises if you don't want to get better. Ballsome? DRACARYS!

Loved watching this! I haven't played my electric guitar in a long time, using my 3-string cigar box guitar almost exclusively now, but I cut my teeth on Duane Allman after hearing him play and still utilize some of the techniques I learned from him. I'm intimately familiar with the riffs and the techniques, having figured them out myself just as you did--except the thing where you play the same note in two separate places. I remember thinking that would be the only way TO do it but it seemed illogical to me at the time. Now it makes sense. Nice work. Thank you.

@oneeyedtrousersnake8843
@oneeyedtrousersnake8843 7 лет назад
Nicholas Barile - Use a tube amp with 50 watts power or less. No effects, just let the guitar and the amp drive the tone. Duane used 50 watt Marshall heads and Marshall cabinets. You can use amps with even less power, but you need at least 15-20 watts. Also, turn the pick around to where the larger end is hitting the strings. P90 or humbucking pickups are preferable over single coiled pickups.
@georgeparkins777
@georgeparkins777 6 лет назад
Like Ocean Hedonist said, you need the amp to be underpowered, so the sound gets gets distorted and a little fuzzy. Natural overdrive, if I remember at all what my engineer friend told me, is caused by the gain being higher than the driver circuit can handle, which happens at a lower volume when the power is less than the amp is designed for. There are small modeling amps that have an actual "power level" knob that either simulates low power, or actually dials back the power supply to a lower amperage. Vox Valvetronix are cheap amps that have this feature, but they have so much technology crammed into them that it can be hard to get a really natural tone. I don't record with mine.
