I still don't understand how people can get excited intellectually about index investing.. what exactly is there to talk about? Money is one thing, but you miss out on so much intellectual discovery imo. I see stock picking as investing in my mental acuity for old age.
The way I see it, had I gone into some entirely different profession, indexes would be a smart set it and forget it strategy. Although most likely I probably would go with indexes as the most tax efficient strategy in an UTMA if I ever bothered with children. But I imagine a lot of these folks probably imagine 30-95% of a portfolio should be held in indexes or similar and less than half suggest individual picks if you love analyzing companies
