This Mileage Unknown, was going to be a good project update on Penelope my 1966 Vw Fastback. Since the last video we replaced the clutch on Penelope and I've been daily driving my 1966 Type 3 Volkswagen since! She's finally running awesome and then it all went sideways..... I'm not sure what the problem is just yet I have a few ideas and hopefully it's not as serious as she's completely dead... Yes I should've stopped driving when the noise started but if you follow channel you know my frustration and why I just wanted to get home.....
Some of you have shown interest in my VW 4 speed shift pattern hat and Travis and I have started making some! We'll be adding new hats with different colors and styles and patches! Stick with it, don’t lose heart. Just pulled the engine on my beetle for the 3rd time in so many days. 3rd time I just smiled as what do you do. Good luck.

I'm sure it'll get there the frustration on this one has been an all time high! It can be so frustrating when all you really want to do is drive and enjoy.

I have remove/install cylinders heads, on a type 3 1600, with the engine in place. Its 57 years old. VW didn't think these cars would last this long. Take your time and fix it right.

It's crazy I feel like we've done everything right like 10 times on this one! Hopefully it's not as crazy as I think it is but won't know until I get back into it... and I can't even imagine trying 2 do heads in place with tins on! Woah 😳

@@mileageunknown8910 You can rebuild the top end on a type 3 with the case still bolted transmission. Easy compared to a type 1. Use high quality parts to fix your problems.

That is such a great car. My 71 fastback has been so dependable. Knock on wood. Once you get the bugs worked out of it they really are bullet proof. And I believe you are running a bigger motor. My Speedy is the same color as your Penelope. It runs an automatic transmission. Looses a little performance but so easy to drive. I'm sure you will figure it out. Good luck with that. It's crazy I've had so many VW's be crazy reliable and this one keeps on fighting me! I hope it's not as major as I think I did get it 2 fire up at one point and the noise was gone! So I'm at a bit of a loss....

@@mileageunknown8910 on the RU-vid Duckman his fastback cv shafts bolts backed out at the transmission inner CVS. Made similar sounds under load. Just a thought.

My bestie has a ‘67 Bug that he brought back from the dead. He had to install a rebuilt transaxle and motor; including clutch, flywheel, throwout bearing, gland nut and like 5 new starters and that includes the starter bushing in the transaxle. Car now works fine but every time it starts it makes a weird noise. Keep at it. I hope the throwout bearing hasn’t come loose from the clips; easy for them to do that and then all hell breaks loose; happened to my bestie as well.

I must own Penelope's sister. Same thing with my car. EVERYTHING has to be an issue. Paid $$$ for a shop built (NEW)engine and since day one I can not keep it running good. I have maybe 1,500 miles on the car since I got it a year and a half ago. I'm actually on the fence on selling it.

I don’t know if you’re in a mode that wants to hear it, but try to separate “the car” from this mechanical issue. The car can still be lovely. It was hard to hear the noise well until nearly the end, but I think you’re on the right track. If that was the engine, it would have blown. You are looking at the trans in some way or another, I think. Yeah, you’ll probably have to pull the engine 😕 You’re probably getting pretty good at it! Stick with it and prove to her that she is worth it to you!

Hopefully I get 2 do some tinkering this weekend and dig a bit more..... I did get it 2 fire up and the noise was completely gone so I'm at a bit of a loss.... now the starter sounds horrible and barely turns the engine so I'm almost wondering if I had the starter shorting out and trying 2 engage when I was driving.... hopefully the flywheel isn't destroyed.

@@mileageunknown8910 in theory, you could disconnect the starter altogether, push start it and see if the problem is gone. Lots of ways to eliminate variables. Good luck and keep us posted!

Well..... I'm not sure at this point haven dug into it that much I did get it 2 fire up and the starter sounds horrendous, when it fired no noise.... I'm half thinking the starter shorted or my ign switch shorted and the starter was engaging hammering the flywheel..... so maybe I killed the starter hopefully didn't demolish the flywheel....
