I was in the hospital dying and this video saved my life. On my way home I'm stopping at my local electronics store for the purchase of a projector to show this to my entire local community
@@gamerhero9559 Colosseum & XD aren't spin-offs then? Nor Pokémon Box with its Celebi (or Pokemon Channel in EU), or Pokémon Ranger Shadows of Almia with its Manaphy? And definitively Pokémon GO is a mainline game, which allows you to transfer as many Pokémon as you want towards Pokémon Home.
PLA was the closest to how I imagined pokemon was going to be like in 3d, interacting, throwing things at them, them harming the actual player where the player can faint as well, particularly with all those anime scenes of Ash and friends running away from pokemon like Beedrill and other scary pokemon
I think there's hope to be had. The Pokemon Company knows they can't do this forever, and here's why: the reason why I am a 29yo man who spends all his free time on these games is because of the great memories they made on me as a kid. I lived through that golden era and I'm always chasing it. But that's not going to be the case with the next generation if all Pokemon is to them is a mobile Bejeweled reskin. They'll forget about Pokemon and won't spend money on it. And the older generation like us will lose faith and stop paying microtransactions if a quality experience is never given. TPCI will either realize this and put in the effort, or those glorious PoGo numbers will decline year over year until they're back to square one.
yup extremely well said. they need something that can effectively welcome new fans to the franchise or can just increase current fan loyalty. like you said, eventually people who grew up in the gen 1/2 eras will fade out, even the super fans
Whenever a company gets too big, it loses whatever soul it had. Sadly there are barely any indie studios giving the Pokémon formula a try and the few that are, are mostly only trying to make a quick buck.
You could play world of final fantasy. Sure it's a square enix attempt at pokemon. But it has full on voice acting. A big world, a ball capture system to capture monsters. An for $30-40 you can even play it on the gounlike pokemon broke and crash editions for $60.
Cassette beasts Coromon Nexomon Digimon cyber sleuth Temtem World of final fantasy Dragon quests monsters Monster sanctuary Stop complaining, and start supporting
@@Chrolloackerman1 played a lot of them and none of them really made me want to revisit them. Coromon for example... most people love it, but 10h in I had the feeling all the game does is trying to waste my time to make it feel longer than it is. TemTem was a great idea but it ended up being broken and the devs don't care anymore.
"games like this put these less popular pokemon in the spotlight" and nowadays it feels like the spotlight is reserved for pikachu, eevee, starters, talking about how cool gen 1 was and a few select others. it's part of the reason the complete pokedex being lost sucked so bad, it was that one thing that guaranteed the forgotten ones a spot.
Man, I played SO much Mystery Dungeon as a kid (mainly Explorers of Darkness). So much so that whenever I hear the Treasure Town theme I'm immediately hit with a wave of nostalgia that it takes a few minutes to get over. I also had loads of fun with Pokemon Ranger, my favorite from that franchise being Guardian Signs. A lot of these spinoff games just had so much heart to them that made me that much more of a Pokemon fan, and I'm sad to say that we'll likely never get anything on the same level of quality out of a spinoff game ever again. Oh, and my buddy recently lent me his copy of Gale of Dakness, which I'm now playing for the first time. Having a lot of fun with it so far.
Although I rationally know it's relatively small compared to the mainline games, that the spinoffs consistently sold +1mm but are still considered "poor sellers" is insane to me. All but AAA games would consider those numbers a smash success. I'm sure the games were still profitable, just unfortunate it's not "enough." If I had to guess, I'd say it's just because of the relatively higher investment combined with how unsteerable their marketing team is at this point (by that I mean, the games seem to have little flexibility in development time because their release scheduling is extremely rigid). Great video btw!
Thank you! and yeah I completely agree. I guess when you become such a massive media franchise, it changes your entire perspective on success/failure. I think the company has become a little short-sighted in terms of the way they view sales/quality, but hopefully that can change
Thanks for shouting out the PokéPark games, definitely underrated, great palette cleansers. Also think the Detective Pikachu games deserve a mention. Absolutely the most lived-in feeling world of Pokémon spinoffs in the past good while.
My favorite spin-offs were Conquest and Pokemon Puzzle League. Yeah, I never played Gale of Darkness or Coliseum, but I still enjoyed the ones I actually got to play.
I’m surprised you didn’t touch on Pokémon Masters. I think it’s one of the only mobile games in the franchise that has been filled with chalk full of personality and care, despite it being a grab on the gatcha market.
Good video. I'm also an avid enjoyer of these spin-off titles. Blue Mystery Dungeon, Ranger, and Coliseum/XD are all goated for sure. It really is a shame we won't be seeing more things like those. Hell, I think it's a miracle we got a Mystery Dungeon remake on Switch. I'd love to see Colosseum and XD get the same treatment, as they're right up there with Emerald and HGSS as my all-time favorites.
thank you! completely agreed. HG/SS are games I can replay infinitely and never get tired of. I actually just recently finished replaying it about a month or two ago lol
Even if it was resting on their laurels, I enjoyed the crap out of Rescue Team DX after only playing EOSky as a kid. Cool art direction too. I hope that release is a sing of things to come, tho it has been a few years.
We were 100% robbed of quality spinoffs. Colesseum and XD Gale of Darkness were arguably the best games in the entire franchise and just curbstomp every single modern day switch pokemon games.
Really smart and sincere video. Subscribed. Yeah I only have experienced the main entry games but now as an adult I’ve finally had a chance to play with the old spin offs. Those old spin offs mentioned here were phenomenal and it’s as you said they helped expand and build upon the world.
Speaking as a fellow Pokemon fan that adored Pokemon Red, Blue and Yellow as a kid and grew into adoring Pokemon Collosseum, Mystery Dungeon and Pokemon Pinball, I agree with everything you are saying here. I would also argue that the point of a spinoff title is to also experiment. You get to see what works and what doesn't for a game concept. To illustrate my point, I have to say Yo-Kai Watch games in recent years have done more than recent Pokemon games. Yo-Kai Watch games have been experimenting with real time action RPG anime-esque gameplay like you would expect from the Pokemon anime through Busters (I madr my own videos on that so hopefully you take the time to watch those and see what I mean). Yo-Kai Watch took advantage with such experimentation with real time action anime gameplay through Busters and combined it with roguelike gameplay elements you would see from Pokemon Mystery Dungeon and brought it TO MAIN SERIES. Imagine if Pokemon had a main series game that had Mystery Dungeon as an online side mode. You gotta admit that is some serious volume in content.
Let's be real. Pokemon colosseum and the ranger series would easilly work as their own anime. If Game-Freak remastered the game osts and sold them. It would easily cover the cost of remaking one colosseum game with brand new graphics. Even, if it used the look of lets go pikachu/ evvee approach. The finality poke'mon colosseum has will let new players sit as the orchestra ending happens. Pokemon ranger has really good moments, An just drawing circles would be crazy if the ai was updated to be harder. Heck the switch has touch support. It's a crying shame game-freak never made a mobile or demo of pokemon ranger for any device.
I agree, giving Colosseum and ranger some spotlight again would be awesome. I think if they really wanted to, Nintendo/Gamefreak could easily think of a creative way to bring back the mechanics of the Ranger games while also keeping it fresh for 2023
Stadium and Colloseeum are always my fav Pokemon spinoff games because of the way they made Pokemon Battles feel like a legit competitive sport and gave an extra edge on how you raised your Pokemon in (what was) the GameBoy Games.
Pokepark Wii: Primitive and saccharine, but provided just the right amount of challenge for little eight-year-old me without getting stuck, provided me hours of stimulation even after I finished the story Pokemon Sleep: *couldn't even have server maintenance without wiping my entire fucking save file, shiny Houndour included*
I loved Colosseum and Gale of Darkness so much when I was younger. I was desperate to get that Bonsley and Munchlax, because gen 4 wasn't out at the time yet
Another reason why spin off disappeared is the fact that the main line games introduced a lot of features that originated in the spin offs. The 3d models that characterized the Stadium series and the Colosseum series? Starting from X and Y now all the main line games are 3d. The Pokémon in the overworld that characterized the Ranger series? Let's Go Pikachu & Eevee and later entries now also feature Pokémon in the overworld, and in Legends Arceus the wild Pokémon can also directly hurt the player character just like used to do in the Pokémon Ranger games. More mature story lines like we had with Colosseum, XD Gale of Darkness and the Mystery Dungeon games? Well they tried doing that with the gen 5 games but the low sellings stopped them from trying again, the Alola games and Legends Arceus are the closest attempts, but they lack the depth and the character writing of gen 5 honestly. The possibility to ride your Pokémon that was a staple in all the Ranger series? That also has been implemented by the main line games, heck in ORAS they literally give you a Latios or a Latias to fly across the map just like in Pokémon Ranger Guardian Signs. And other games like X and Y, the gen 7 games, Legend Arceus, Scarlet and Violet let you ride certain Pokémon, most notably the newest box legendaries Koraidon and Miraidon, that's literally their whole gimmick. And with the newest dlc now you can also directly control your Pokémon like in the Mystery Dungeon and in the PokéPark series. With the variety the main line games offer nowadays there will be always less and less room for the spin off games sadly. In the future I can also see Pokémon Snap being absorbed into the main line games by improving the already present features of taking pictures in the games and making it a whole new aspect of the game, but of course they would have to also improve the graphics of the game significantly. My only hope for the future are seeing new entries at least for the Pokkén, Detective Pikachu and Mystery Dungeon series, sadly games like Pokémon Ranger or Pokémon Dash are stuck in the past, though I would love to see them back I know it's unlikely to happen
Fun little fact. The new 3ds was made because, pokemon on the 3ds had some serious optimization issues. Where game freak loaded all pokemon under all ground areas at all times. Which is why the games had major slow downs. If nintendo released a new v2 switch on par with ps4. If we use world of final fantasy as a bench mark of what a mon game with a big budget , lots of voice acting, a unique combate system, and lots of mon to catch running at 1080-1280p 30-60 fps. On a v1.1 switch model. Meanwhile all pokemon switch games run sub 22 fps 720p. Having a stronger switch wouldn't fix the many issues with the pokemon game coding. Ever since pkmn xy all pokemon games excluding remakes/ side games. Use triple data compression. Which hurts game performance even more. Which is why game freak uses unity off and off for games like pokemon brilliant diamond/ shinning pearl.
Pokemon Stadiums 1 and 2 and especially Pokemon Puzzle League were the shit on the Nintendo 64. I remember spending countless hours trying to beat the Gym Leader castles and playing the mini-games in the Stadium games as well as spending countless hours playing and mastering the mechanics of Pokemon Puzzle League and being absolutely addicted to it. I would absolutely love to have these days back again. I also really love the Pokemon Mystery Dungeon series too. Got into the series thanks to playing Mystery Dungeon DX on the Switch
Sure smart phones are easier than buying a console or handheld to play a Pokemon game, but what we loose is the quality and hard work behind the development that was put into those older Pokemon games.
I honestly think Scarlet and Violet have soul, just not as much as Legends. The writing and characters have genuine effort put into them, and the new pokemon designs are inspired, but the production was rushed, leaving a glitchy, heavily criticized game that doesn’t feel worth $95 for the full product.
That photo on the left tickled my nostalgia nuts so hard, goddammit I love the Ranger and Mystery Dungeon series, Shadows of Almia is my first Pokemon game ever.
Unpopular opinion: Ranger and Mystery Dungeon are just better than the mainline titles. Mystery Dungeon primarely has those absolutely beautiful stories and emotional moments, however the gameplay itself is miles ahead of the mainline games aswell, as you will need to take things into consideration like positioning, planning which items to bring and when to use them best and actually having to survive multiple encounters without getting the option to run back to the Pokécenter in between. Ranger is a Pokémon action RPG! Fu(k yeah!!!
I just want new mystery dungeon games man. They randomly gave us a remake of the first game and then just went silent again. I really hope we get more in the future
While I loved Hey You Pikachu, I sadly wasn't able to complete it, nor did my siblings. And while my sister was able to get pretty far in Pokemon Colosseum, I will always love Pokemon Channel. And considering that many of the spinoff games are now 15/20/25+ years old, it just goes to show how old these games are, yet Pokemon Channel was the ONLY Pokemon game that I've ever beaten. I've tried Pokemon Yellow, but never really understood what made battling exciting or catching the pokemon intriguing, when I was more of a slice of life person whom loved the creatures and that's about it. And even then Pokemon Channel felt like a journey to do a simple thing as watching TV since, that was the whole point of the game. But it felt like you can do whatever you wanted and at your own pace. Wanted to do it for a few minutes and that's it? You can do so. Want to watch one channel and that's about it? You can do so. Want to play and look around with Pikachu in the areas it offers? You can do that in Pokemon Channel. And the ending though, with the song and the star going across the "The End" around the final part of Pichu Bros. In Party Panic, and I was crying at the end. Plus hearing one of the tunes from Hey You Pikachu, when you say goodbye to pikachu for that day when you arrive back at your home, that made me sob so hard, and the sad part, it takes you back to the title screen. And it doesn't tell you if the pikachu is okay or not, it just ends. And while I have beatedn Mario Kart Double Dash in 2016, I don't really beat video games often because, well after that one part of the race in Need For Speed Hot Pursuit 2 when I was racing with the Mclaren F1LM near the end of the race and not seeing the spikes strip at the bottom not only got me arrested in that video game, but all the other racers passed me and one of them won first place. I was SOOO close to winning first place, but I hit the wall too quickly and ended up going into the spikes strip...And from that day on back in 2010 I never, EVER bothered to complete a video game ever again. As for NFS HP3, well, I'm pretty close to beating it with all gold medals but the amount of times I had to reset just to get them caused me to think this was too much work. But for Pokemon Channel, I can come back to it whenever I wanted and get a nice relaxing feeling with watching some of those channels, maybe play a quiz wobbuffet here and there, and see what's up at the Shop and Squirtle to see what he's selling (You can only buy 20 items per day in total, which I know it sucks but that's what it does. And some of those items take a few days to even ship and such).
Pokemon Stadium 1 and 2 were a part of my childhood my Cousin got me into Pokemon the Spinoffs r the part of the reason I became a PokeFan then the DS era came Pokemon Ranger Trilogy still is one of my favorites by te way I grew up in the early 2000s.
To be fair I wouldn't call Scarlet & Violet soulless. There's actually some great ideas in there with lots of charming new mons, a damn cool story and in places a real killer soundtrack. It's just too bad the game is a broken pos in so many places, looks ugly as hell in most places and is released on an increasingly underpowered console that overstayed it's welcome by a good few years making it run like an absolute trashfire. Good vid. I miss Mystery Dungeon.
Everything you said about SV is completely true. I definitely enjoyed the game and played thru it when it first came out, but I just feel like they were lacking the TLC that they deserve. it’s a game that had so much potential to be great imo
Wonderful video! I am really sad about the death of spin offs (even if I do enjoy GO and Masters), but I honestly think that Legends Arceus has become an embodiment of the spin offs in a way. Like you said, its hard for spin offs to exist in todays gaming space. But I honestly think Legends Arceus feels like the passion and love of spin offs put into something mainline- it feels like Mystery Dungeon with its atmosphere and story and being lost in a new world and joining a guild, but it also feels like the GameCube games and in some ways even has the life and expansiveness of Pokemon Snap. Pokemon SV also has some of the feel of snap, but even has the whole playing as Pokemon thing from PokePark! I think that while spin offs are nearly dead, their spirit lives on in the mainline entries. And with Legends Z-A upcoming, I think the Legends series is going to be GameFreaks way to show the passion and love from spin offs prior Even if it is really sad (and goodness I want a new PMD and PokePark on Switch so badly), I think Legends Arceus really is the shine of hope that the passion and care put into this series never died.
Back in the day, Pokemon Snap on the N64 was a way to promote the Anime series that had Todd Snap in a few episodes towards the end of Season 1 to make up for the Delay caused by the Porygon Incident. Plus the N64 needed some support in their software lineup and Pocket Monsters Stadium wasn't going too well in Japan since it was used to promote Competitive Pokemon battles in Tokyo, they didn't have all the monsters in that initial game.
New pokemon snap and legends arceus are better than anything from the nostalgia era, I don't think it's fair to say quality has declined because micro transaction games exist parallel to them, we'll made video though
That's what I think, too. Well PMD Explorers is my favourite game of all time, so it's not better than new Snap or Legends Arceus to me. But I still really like Legends and new Snap, both are great games and I like them as much as Pokepark (which I also like a lot XD). The micro transaction games only replace the more simpler Spinoffs, that we always had like Pinball and Puzzel League.
Thank you! PLA is probably one of the best / most memorable games I’ve played in a long time for sure. As far as snap goes, I just feel like it didn’t hit the same… maybe cause I’m older playing thru it or I because knew what to expect after playing it for the first time as a kid
@johnnybone I think regardless of if new snap is your type of game or not imo it hits all the beats of a high quality spin off: Great animation, attention to detail, free dlc and better world building then the main games.
WOW, Pokken tournament didn't even get a mention despite being one the best spinoffs and great unique fighting game as well.I can't take you that seriously considering such a huge blundering blindspot. Well put together video despite that though, left a like. Btw have you played Palworld yet?
I'm surprised they haven't done a pokemon warriors game yet. I kinda imagined what like a MD kinda game mixed with rumble/warriors gameplay would be like seeing things from the pokemons' perspective and not a top-down perspective like like the other MD games games. Or a pokemon and persona kinda thing since we kinda got a fire emblem ish kinda game in Conquest
A Pokemon Warriors title sound amazing. Though I have a feeling that if they decide to give a new Nintendo franchise a Musou spinoff, it'll be Xenoblade.
I still love the Pokemon Mystery Dungeon games. 🙂 I'm glad that I have all 4 of them and my 3DS. I'm replaying through Blue Rescue Team on my 3DS right now.
to be fair to pmd super 1.6million is a good sales number for any game ....its just low in pokemon and honestly...i want PMD back, it was easily the best
I loved Pokémon stadium and pokemon mystery dungeon and I wish they made a pokemon mystery dungeon animated series like when they had the promotional animated episodes for the first pokemon mystery dungeon games
I loved mystery dungeon but pokemon conquest is my overall favorite. It was a unique crossover and excellent game. I would never have seen it if I was not working retail at the time.
I wish you talked about Pokémon Battle Revolution. That spinoff has really good visuals and animations that put modern mainline Pokémon games to shame. It's also made by Genius Sonority.
@@Wundaboi Kinda, it is the first Pokemon game to introduce Pokemon Trainer customization, but it's more like a Stadium game without the mini games. Colosseum has a real storyline.
I just wish that Pokemon would focus on the more popular/successful spin offs. We’ve sort of gotten that with Detective Pikachu 2, Snap 2, and PMD DX. But I think they could go a but further. Pokepark would be perfect since the Switch doubles as a home console (making it also a successor to the Wii). Ranger could use the same mechanics implemented in Let’s Go Pikachu/Eevee where we actually have to draw the circles like the rangers do in the anime (something I’m positive most fans would enjoy until we all tear our rotator cuffs lol). And Conquest can work on pretty much any system since its mechanics aren’t tied to a certain device’s functions. And while I loved Legends, it’d be great to get another fully original game in the same vein as Colosseum/XD that Genius Sonority works on. We’ve already seen Shuffle working well as an app. Other puzzle games like Trozei and maybe even Dash can be programmed to operate similarly. Just focus on the ones that are more profitable/fans have been asking for, and they’ll be fine! The PMD community will literally buy anything at this point since it’s nearly been 4 years since the last release.
Pla kinda gave me assassin creed vibes with the pokemon being able to hit the player and you can hit pokemon with balls without needing to go into a battle like the ball is a arrow and werdeer is the mount and the pokemon the enemies and he anime how you can hit pokemon before its there turn
I’m very happy this video was sent my way. While I love the mainline games, the side games always held my heart for longer Ranger (I’m of the opinion that everyone should play Shadows of Almia) were games I enjoyed replaying multiple times, Mystery Dungeon managed to destroy me emotionally and I could never get sick of them, and even recent ones like Arceus and Pokémon Snap brought me much enjoyment and I really want to find time to play them again. I even play Sleep right now cause it’s just a cute little thing that feeds my ADHD. But yeah…Pokemon should put out more proper side games cause the demand is still there. Anytime I streamed something Pokémon, people talked about side games with love and were a topic that came up multiple times. I’m just hopeful whatever Nintendo creates next console wise leaves the door open for this possibility.
glad that you watched! and yup completely agreed, I don’t think that the door will ever be fully closed on the possibility of them running with another spinoff like I mentioned in the video, the style of PLA is spinoff-esque in relation to every mainline game that’s ever come out. we already saw how capable that the company is, so it’s not out of the question to maybe get another banger down the line
You do realise the new 3ds was made because game-freak optimimization is crap. Which is why even with stronger hardware the games still chugged. Assuming better hardware was made. Compaire world of final fantasy a square enix pokemon style game with tons of areas, a big world, lots of voice acting, and many mons to catch. Even on the switch World of final fantasy is proof game-freak games are made on the cheap and run like it.
I would love to see a Pokémon Ranger game with the Legends: Arceus gameplay and Abilities working in and out of battles. Hikari no Kiseki has the best art style that can be reused.
It's almost sad how these new indie games that have appeared out of seemingly nowhere and made craters out of the franchises they were inspired from (Lethal Company seems to be it's own thing) by taking the very same risks that they don't. I hope this serves as a wakeup call to get up and actually pioneer some new ideas for a Pokemon game. Legends Arceus was a great start and could learn a thing or two from Palworld... minus the more violent aspects, but more on the interactions with the Pokemon, the world around you and real time combat (if we ever get such a combat system).
I love cafe remix Like trozei or puzzle league I think it Changes with the times and equipment Also player styles People like different games Different skill sets This is what spinoffs provide.
It didn't do anything for me. 😶 It was just taking up space on my phone and didn't really offer me anything gameplay/collecting wise. Don't sell your data or your soul so easily. Especially for something that isn't worth it.
Got recommended this video by one of the current-gen window-lickers on Twitter who unironically wants to tell you to kill yourself. Anyway, good video and Legends Arceus is a spinoff, especially if you go to the official Pokémon Forums where they subtly differentiate PLA from a "mainline" game. I daresay that BDSP is also a spinoff because it is so bad at fitting in with its own generation that I cannot say it's mainline in good faith. Gonna call it a "mainlike" Pokémon game. Also, it's hot trash
I love Pokémon Mystery Dungeon. I feel like they could easily rework it into a Roguelike with action RPG elements. But that’s just a pipe dream of mine 🫠
