The Slowest Planes ever Made 

I've had the honour of being a passenger in an Antonov AN-2 Colt and the incredible experience of when it slowed down, then stopped then flew backwards. Then they shoved it in first gear (or whatever it is they do) and we calmly started off going forward again. Wonderful aircraft. Watched a mock dogfight with a Fieseler Fi 156 Storch and Gloster Gladiator Biplane at Old Warden here in England. The Gladiator had speed against the Storch which was so slow it could move out of the way Quickly. Another very impressive slow flier The Bristol Boxkite. Old Warden flies some of the oldest original aircraft including getting a Bleriot XI into the air.

That Blériot is the only airplane that can get a bird strike from the rear. ;-)

Too bad some of these aren't still made today. The size, simplicity, and affordability of these type airplanes helped overcome the intimidation factor of flying back in the day.

For me, the Blériot is the most amazing of all the aircraft represented. It was a very ingenious design for its day. The fact that at least one is still flyable today boggles the mind!🙂🙃🙂👍

We Argentines have the honor of having a hero of the aviation of the early 20th century, Don Jorge Newvery, who attempted to cross the Andes Mountains with a Morane Saulnier.

Missed the '90s Wainfan FMX-4 "Facetmobile". 740 lbs, with 340lbs useful load demonstrated flying cross country to Oshkosk.100 kts on 40hp. While being sleek and quick on low power while carrying a load, it could stay aloft at under 16kts and would not stall. The Arup S-2of Indiana in 1934. 780lbs, 85kts on 37 hp, landing speed under 18kts. Steep 45°climb, would not stall. It and the following S-4 flew without incident for several seasons of airshows, frequently carrying advertising to pay for shop and hangar space because nobody wanted to buy or invest. The Nemeth parachute plane of the '30s. The fuselage of an Alliance Argo biplane with a 15' diameter circular wing parasol above the fuselage. Faster than the original, 45° climb, 60° super slow descent with landing roll in its length with any wind. Stall-proof. The Eshelman commonly known as the flying flounder of the early '40s. Aspect ratio under 1. 156kts on 110hp, super STOL and stall-proof. All these are found on youtubes.

Beware the "Equal Transit Time" theory of lift which is alluded to in the beginning of this video.

Didn't mention the Bailey Moyes Dragonfly. Cruises at 45 mph--stalls at 20 mph.

PZL M-15 Belphegor was not designed by any polish aircraft maker. The idea for the aircraft was conceived by Soviet engineer Riamir Izmaylov. Then the plane was designed in his bureau and finally the production was handed over to Poland. The famous russian aircraft designer Oleg Antonov called the plane 'a rocket for digging potatoes'.

The inspiration of the Blariot XI became the Fokker Eindecker and used very successfully in the early war years of WWI. Used as a fighter, a strike aircraft and reconnaissance plane the redesigned Blariot was used against the French aeroplane designers. The history of this plane is actually quite impressive with the names of some very successful aces of WWI and later WWII who got their start in such a plane. We all think of the Fokker Triplane as the pinnacle of German planes in WWI, but those had three wings. The first German war machines that dominated the skies were single-wing (monoplanes) that had control surfaces what warped the shape of the wing instead of using flaps to control the direction the plane flew. They are fascinating planes to research.

Antonov AN-2 spotted!, automatic thumbs up!

The Blériot flew over Montréal in 1911 first air show in Canada, a replica is being built in Ste Anne Debellevue at Montréal air museum on McGill college and university campus, air craft for 1911 included the Wright’s brothers, lighter than air ballon’s there is footage of that event, stages and bleachers where setup near where now is city hall Pointe-Claire city hall.

Why almost none of English speakers care to check how Slavic names are pronounced (while still pronouncing German and French names right)? "Antonov" has a stress on the 2nd syllable, and "Jaroslav" starts with "ya", like in "yard".

Any plane can land or take off in a short distance with enough headwind. My Quick Silver with a 100cc Yamaha had a stall speed of 18mph - zero wind.

Slow flight is impressive too! I like STOL capability. Seeing things from above, low and slow is terrific!

Flying in an An-2 is like standing almost still in the air. BTW, the Junkers 52 felt the same.

Watched a video yesterday about *Bobby Bailey* - creator of the Bailey Moyes Dragonfly, designed specifically to be controllable at SLOW speeds. He described it as made to go up, and go down. It's competitions was a plane named The Drifter. The Dragonfly had relatively HUGE wings and Ailerons. Ailerons that worked in a stall and even after stalling. Saw shots of Bobby flying this thing like he was part of it, full-on maneuvers and flying sideways and human jogging speed. Before beating me up on inaccuracies in my post, know that I know ZERO about hang gliding, tow planes or any of it. Just a fan or all things aeronautical and capable of flight since getting into quadcopters for photography. Bobby Baily died shortly after giving the brief interview I saw, during a test flight of a customer built Dragonfly. Bobby, at 70-ish years of age was lost by the misuse, or incorrect fitting of wing retention bot or bolts. He did not see it, and the wing separated at some 350 feet AGL. RIP Bobby, you seemed incredibly talented, smart, soft spoken, and am was truly sorry to hear of your passing, in the same moment I learned of your work. Bobby, and people like him, are the reason you don't see hang gliders towed by boats anymore.

What does the An-2's airSPEED have to do with airWORTHINESS? Those are entirely different, unrelated concepts.

Can’t top a design that works, regardless of WHEN it was made. We should honestly start making more AN-2 aircraft with some more powerful engines. It’s a plane that’s INCAPABLE of crashing without deliberately trying to mess it up. We need more of these things.

I am puzzled by the opening few phrases which seem to indicate that the ability to fly depends upon the 'speed/velocity' of the wing through the air. Surely the 'Lift' is provided by the difference in the air velocity over the upper and lower surfaces of the wing so if the air is going faster or slower the lift does not change because the difference does not change. Speed through the air is governed by the power of the engive and the lift by the profile of the wing. To take off you travel forward in order to provide a smooth airflow and then alter the angle of the wing relative to the motion which increases the lift sufficient to raise the weight of the aircraft. If velocity was the main requirement birds would not be able to fly and certainkly not butterflys.

The PZL M-15 Belphegor is NOT the heaviest biplane ever manufactured. Its MTOW is 5,650 kg, The Handley Page O/400 had an MTOW of 6,060 kg, 410 kg (7.3%) higher. Notably, the H.P.12 (the O/400) was introduced during WW1, in 1916, and 600 were built up to 1919. Then there is the Handley Page V/1500: Gross Weight: 13,608 kg, first flight 1918. Only 40 planes made due to WW1 ending. And the Siemens-Schuckert R.VIII -- its empty weight(!) is ~10.5 tons, almost twice what the PZL M-15 has as maximum takeof weight! Gross weight 16,867 kg. Only one completed, not repaired after a gearbox failure during ground testing caused extensive damage --- the Treaty of Versailles being very restrictive when it came to planes and submarines and the like. Zeppelin-Staaken R.VI: gross weight 11,848 kg, 18 built. .... and a good number of other Riesenflugzeuge (R-planes) in WW1 that are a lot larger, heavier etc. Kindly check your sources.

All it takes is low wing loading and some under-camber to STOL.

For the slowest planes of all, check out the videos of microfilm model airplanes. They fly indoors, are powered by a rubber band, and move at less than walking speed.

They divert air. Simply move air, to make lift.

At the time, this aircraft in the thumbnail, the Bleriot was the most successful aircraft manufactured. More successful than the Wright Brothers who by today's aviation standards were a failure.

Things like FAR and AN-2 would be better pronounced by the TTS engine by having their spelling adapted ("F A R", "A N 2", etc) so that the TTS voice would not attempt to say them as words, but rather pronounce the actual acronyms themselves. Also, using part of the clip from an AN-2 accident (03:31) where two people lost their lives is a display of dubious taste.

You will find that the Savanna is a copy of a Zennair and the Storch is a copy of the plane with the same name build by Fiesler.

I recently walked by a reconstructed Wright Flyer --- the first powered aircraft. Nearby was an actual Gossamer Albatross, which flew, human powered across the English Channel. Nearby was an actual SR71, the fastest ever aircraft. Nearby were an actual B-17, B-29, B37, B47 and B52 bomber. The SR71 impressed me the most. It is really a gigantic aircraft, seating a total on ONE person! These were among many other historic aircraft. Where do you suppose I was?

Why no paramotors, takeoff and landing at human foot-speed..?

When talking about Blériot, please never say "ground breaking" anymore. Hard landing is good enough.

No, planes do not fly by pushing air down, gaining lift through Newtonian reaction. Its all about Bernoulli. Air over the top moves past the chord faster than air over the top, rarifying it further. A ram-wing GEV doesn't fly by bouncing air off the underside of the wing and back up from the ground, back and forth. It doesn't transition from Bernuolli lift in GE to supposedly Newtonian reaction in the air above GE.

I learned to fly in a cub back in the sixties!

Last year I bought a 2008 Flyitalia MD3 Rider. It needed a lot of work but I got it in the air early in December. During my first flight with it my CFI asked me to do a power off stall. When I hit 25 knots indicated air speed and the plane still showed no sign of stalling my instructor said "uhhhh... just power up and go on".

NO! NO! NO! NO! NO! NO! NO! NO! Hey narrator, you keep talking about 'slow speed'. There is NO SUCH THING as a 'slow speed' !!!!!!! "Speed" is an abstract concept designed to convey a relative measurement of movement. "Speed" has no physical properties - one cannot paint, hold, touch, throw or place a speed in one's pocket. Likewise one cannot move or stop a speed, therefore it cannot be "fast" or "slow" although whatever is being measured can be. The speed of a plane can be "high" or "low", speed cannot be. Speed is the measurement, not what is being measured. To say the "speed is slow" is confusing the measurement with what is being measured. Speed can be "high" or "higher" or "lower" relative to some other measurement. Saying "The speed of the plane is slow" just doesn't make any sense and is unnecessarily wordy. It is the plane that goes slow, not the speed!!! "The plane is slow" makes sense and is correctly stated.
