Man Geely is just killing it lately. Everything they touch improves some 100%… Volvo had a huge leap, Lotus is reimagined, and now Smart with these latest models. Looking good!
Except the range isn't impressive at ALL per kwh of capacity and neither is those charging speeds for 2024 or 2025 model year evs. Tesla is better in both categories since 2019 now with 3&Y, and the Koreans also since 2021 have better specs than these do. Personally imo geely should convince the merc leadership to offer these in the U.S. through the dealerships. I bet the smart #1 if priced under 35k, even without tax credit access would still sell decently locally. And the obviously much more upscale looking #3 could also do quite well here. Even without the tax credit access, or only make it available on leases as the loophole exists for that. As many luxury segment cars already are leased not purchased. Also geely could cheat like Volvo and offset some of the import tariffs by exporting us built Mercedes.👍🏻
@@TheFPSPower they could sell tens of thousands of them easily. Hundreds of thousands though no not likely. The entire compact segment depending on the year over here you look? Is 350-500,000 in total annual sales. But evs also open up new market opportunities(tesla will blow this wide open in 2025 with the 25k compacts. As no premium/luxury segment compact compact suv/cuv evs are really available here today anyway. Hence why I said what I did. 👍🏻 Selling them through merc dealers would give people some confidence, falsely placed maybe? But still more confidence than a china only ev brand has, that they could get them serviced, repaired and any warranty recall work done.
It's about time Mercedes started upping the game on the smart brand. You can clearly see EQE all over this. Spectacular step in the right direction. The smart brand has been reborn!
@@agentsmithishere Not sure this is something Americans are more likely to buy, but my countrymen never seem to want what I want and I resent the fact that their preferences limit my options.
@@agentsmithishere The only cars you can sell Americans to make profit without help from the government is trucks and even the EV versions don't sell *cough ford lightning
I liked the video. However I'm missing the part how it compares to the #1 and where it falls in the line-up. The end was also a bit abrupt. Of course we can check the other videos ourselves but I want to hear a bit more from you how the car compares to the ex30 and zeeker and what you think about the trio.
@@jonpetter8921 No, Mercedes is only responsible for Design, the car itself is manufactured in Geely's factories and implements Geely's hardware and software solution.
@@jonpetter8921 I believe the other commenter is correct. Besides, if you compare a car from any of Geely's higher-end - or even midrange - brands to a Mercedes, you'll see that the Geely is a huge step up.
Such a cool little car. I really dig the interior, with the HUD and the small screen above the steering wheel, right in front of the driver, thus him not having to constantly turn his head to the right in order to check the central screen, as in a Tesla.
@@TD1237 cool and in 4,000,000+real actual tesla owners view you are wrong. Oh yeah and almost everyone else's cheap evs also went the central screen only route. They also make cheap kits to ad a screen behind the wheel for tesla 3&Y.👍🏻😎
The Smart EVs are based on Geely's SEA platform; the new Mini Cooper EVs are based on Great Wall Motor's ME platform; Volkswagen will be using Xpeng's platform; and Audi will be using a platform developed by SAIC. The Germans have been reduced to the role of design consultants. How the mighty have fallen.
nah, first of all Smart and Mini Cooper always have been kinda independent from their mother brands so why not use additional cooperations for these side brands? Keeps production cost down and margins high. On the other hand both BMW and Mercedes will use their self-developed EV platforms for their own cars. And in fact both the cars and the EV platforms are better than the one from chinese brands. Audi will use PPE platform from Porsche for their bigger models. BTW Mercedes will anounce the CLA concept today which has the new MMA platform. The production model will be available at the end of next year. Compare the stats of the upcoming MMA platform, which will be the same platform and chassis for a new compact SUV (bigger than Smart #3 tho), to the Smart #3 or any of the chinese brands and it is just night and day. What chinese manufacturers nailed over the last years is the design and somewhat the build quality, but almost all of that was achieved with help of western designers and technology. CATL has some interessting batteries, but they sell them to every brand. So no advantage here. Research from US/UK/Germany has shown the potential of battery innovation in the west. Chinese brands lag hard in drivetrain and efficiency metrics tho. That is where german manufacturers still outshine others by a mile. The new CLA will consume 12kw/100km, that is another 10% lower than the new Model 3 highland, and the range will be over 750km/ 470miles for the max trim. The bigger and EV-only platform of Mercedes, which will follow soon after, might be even slightly better. Axial flux motor for the AMG models are interesting, too.
@@wocaomade That is a comforting delusion. In terms of batteries, electric motors, artificial intelligence, and self-driving technologies, the German automakers have fallen far behind their Chinese counterparts. In fact, when performance is unimportant, Chinese automakers choose Bosch components to lower costs.
I almost bought this car. I test drove it several times in comparison with the Zeeker X. In the end, I chose the Zeeker X because of the zero gravity seats, built-in fridge, and cheaper price (I could get the Babos version performance for the same price as the standard Smart #3). Buying the Smart #3 in Europe is actually not bad, because the European version of Zeeker X does not have the zero gravity seats, sliding screen, or built-in fridge like the Chinese version.
I really like it. It’s nice that we’re getting what looks more family sized hatchback EVs and not just typical SUV after SUV. The styling and quality look well judged to my eyes too.
Very attractive car. The lack of a sun screen for the panoramic roof looks like an oversight. Ultimately the price will determine how successful the Smart #3 will be. And of how it compares to similar models from other car makers. Hopefully there will be some driving reviews soon.
Very nice and with great build quality and character. Pricing will be key and perhaps my only reservation is the EV range. They may offer a long range battery upgrade? Excellent presentation as usual.
While I like Volvo EX30 interior and exterior more, I can't deny Smart#3 appears compelling choice. Interior and having a keyfob would be dealbreaker for me in Smart#3 - the bulged out middle with round openings makes interior look tiny. And ever since my Model 3, I don't want to carry a keyfob again. I would however be interested how Smart#3 media UI works over time. Volvo has Android Automotive which is arguably one of the best but my first impression of Smart#3 UI is positive as well.

The biggest problem that i see is that people associate affordable city cars when they hear "Smart". This looks amazing (aside from the very childish looking infotainment system and very very immature looking fonts used) but this will always "feel" expensive as long as people hear Smart and 43k in the same sentence
The range is too short for American but the rest of the design is pretty spot on. The only thing I'd change is the line of the tops of the doors. The "roofline" of the doors means people will have to duck when they get in the back seat and getting things like child safety seats will be harder than a more practical shape. Very nice car though.
Very cool. Tomas I wish you would always measure the full length of cargo space (like you usually do) when back seats are folded down, not just measure the 1/2 cargo area :P
I still remember when the first time I drove a rental Smart back in 2012 (for my brother's wedding filming), that 1.0 liter 3 cylinder car was a piece of crap...I am so shocked at how good it has become today
Smart 3 looks very nice and cute on the inside and outside. I wonder if it will reach our US market. In the US, this would be a good choice if someone wanted a GlA but electric. Thank you for your great video.
I'm as surprised as you are to see this kind of quality from Smart. Seems like they are indeed reinventing the brand with these cars. I'm also very happy that it's possible to get real leather, which IMO is much better than the fake stuff (especially the awful materials Tesla and Volvo come with). I think this makes sense when they are moving towards more of a premium brand.
Thank you very much for your interest in this topic. I also bought cars with animal skin leather seats before I did my research and got to know the industry. The most important thing is: With today's modern materials, you have nothing to lose, just to gain. You achieve the same kind of luxury and comfort or even better while having the same or better durability with less impact on humans, animals and the environment. You can use fabric/cloth, microfibre or leatherette. The classic approach is using oil/plastic as source material. Overall, a vehicle contains about 300 kg plastic. A car seat needs about 5 kg plastic. So the overall plastic share for the seats is very low and it is at this moment the most efficient way to produce a car seat. A couple of litres of fuel equals a car seat basically. So if you want to save oil/plastic, rather look at consumption for energy, fuel and heating and to other car parts than the seat. Note that animal skin leather also always contains a plastic coating for durability. However, long-term we should of course find raw oil alternatives. So going further, seats can be made from recyclables (e.g. from PET-bottles or old fishing nets) or even increased share of plant-based materials (like pine oil, canola oil or start-up materials like Pinatex from pineapple leaves or Desertex from cactus fibre or the mixed-plant-based Mirum, so be seen at ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-S1aNZeoatmE.html). On a calculation base, by ditching animal skin leather from car interiors, the amount of emissions (CO2e) is reduced by 85 (!) % (www.press.bmwgroup.com/africa-dom-easteurope/article/detail/T0403389EN/on-the-market-from-2023:-bmw-and-mini-models-with-vegan-interiors?language=en) - and that is a very conservative calculation. So it is at this moment the most important thing you can do to make car interiors more sustainable. A good example for high-end luxury with ventilated animal free seats is the BMW X7 with Sensafin: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-1pRNkW9nrrw.html And the Kia EV9 with plant-based oil share: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-6vXePQi_MAk.html New leatherette materials can be superior in every aspect, even for cleaning: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-u94YXJ72UTA.html More and more natural materials are rising: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-nRSsXEnwHDo.html Also check out what the animal skin leather industry tried to with our channel: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-nP_CvLlaFlI.html For seeing how the animals are being treated and transported in the global leather industry, watch this footage: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-tkjCAmq1_8E.html Note that the footage is genuine and was recorded by a highly decorated investigative journalist in Germany I know myself personally. In a high animal skin grade, the animals are specifically raised for this matter. However even if meat is the "first" misuse case, the hide remains a profitable body part. That means: If manufacturers put animal leather in a car and you demand it as a customer, you give your money to an industry that earns money by oppressing humans, animals and harms the environment, you make them more profitable. Alternatively, you could support industries with your wallet which try to improve the sustainability of materials. Also, if you turn the argument around to "meat is the waste of the leather industry" you realize that it doesn't make sense (and is ethically doubtful) to discuss the primary use of individual body parts of mammals. Mind experiment: You are getting slain down on the street; would it matter to you if it was for your smartphone or for your purse? We cannot change what we have bought in the past, but with more information and compassion we can change how we decide in the future.
@@autogefuehl I think the cloth option in Volvo is much better than the awful plastic seats, but the fake leather seems to be what everyone thinks is "premium" these days. I just disagree completely and think it's the worst option.
I love the design overall and compact dimensions, but I feel it's a missed opportunity to make it a proper liftback which would make the design more aerodynamic and with a slightly longer back also add some extra storage space.
Being an ix3 driver, im due for a change next year and i have to say, nothing is really ezciting me in the EV market place just now. Particularly witj the range. As soon i heard 200 mile range for this car, i scores it off my list.
I believe it should be called “number 3” and not “hashtag 3”. The # is a number sign that is used to mean “number”. It’s used in F1 for example, where drivers are referred as being #44 or #33 and nobody says hashtag! It can be called hashtag 3 but it seems so silly that I refuse to accept that it was what SMART marketeers had in mind. (Not that smart 😅)
great review thanks. pity about the glass roof; absolutely useless in Australia where it is blazing hot all year. (I boiled to death in my Peugeot). so sad.
Mercedes-Benz is rolling out their small car segment for slightly more mainstream Smart. It's how things work these days. They need the real name for where the good margins are and let a "semi-name" trademark to deal with where the margins are not so great.
@@nunagoras yeah, it’s the same reason the engines and gearboxes in the A-class and B-class are from Renaults, and the Citan small van-based people carrier is based on the Renault Kangoo; it’s all about profit margins.
This #3, the #1, and a Fortwo sized version (#4-2?), need to all be brought back to USA/Canada. There would be a car for every type of driver that way.
Big wheels. Always big wheels!!! When will car companies start making affordable electric family cars with space on the inside rather than massive wheel arches that eat up all the space!
This is 30cm shorter than a Model Y, so maybe not directly comparable in that sense but they do compete price-wise.

@@shroomyesc Yes i'm aware, the things is...price. That are very similar, and I was pleasently surprised with the build quality on the #1. The only true drawback for me, is the boot space, I was expecting the #3 to be bigger than the #1.
Hiii, I follow you from Türkiye. I think you do this job best 👍👏👏👏👏👏 This car is really great. It's looks like a mini premium luxury car. I hope it comes to my country and I buy it. Thanks for sharing the video ✨⭐ Tolga
I don't understand. The Zeekr has soft touch materials everywhere. Then this has hard in some places? Why is that? Why do they insist on that hard plastic at Mercedes if Zeekr shows you don't have to use it.
The Zeekr's interior appears to have nicer materials than most Mercedes. So, if they did the same here, Mercedes might be sh-ooting themselves in the foot. Just my guess.
