4:20 I'm not a big Lilith for Straw Hat believer but it is pretty interesting that the one Vegapunk that ended up tagging along with us at the end is essentially his pirate persona.
What Oda does with Vegapunk is brilliant as a character BECAUSE there is so much more you could cover. This video was awesome for breaking down the satellites but by the nature of their diversity, they open themselves up as different tools on Oda’s belt for exploring themes. For example, you could do a gendered reading of Vegapunk. Why are the female punks negative aspects while the male are good? Is it a form of othering since Vegapunk sees himself primarily male? Are those the parts of himself he wishes he could reject or sees as the lesser evils to his greater goods? Is it the traditional association of the feminine with the more emotional driven aspects of self (and in this case leaving the masculine aspects to associate with the intellectual aspects instead)? Or forget the gender reading and switch gears to another massive theme of Egghead: juxtaposing science and religion. The major players of this arc include a brilliant man of science, the reincarnated will of a god, a humble priest turned cyborg - I could go on but you get the point. Oda never fails to fascinate with his ability to simultaneously achieve remarkable heights of character writing, world building, and narrative engagement
If you compare Stella’s personality between his flashbacks and post lobotomy, his greed and evil traits are stronger than the others. There were a lot of instances of asking for money and lashing out but after creating the satellites he was left with a happy, naive personality.
These Bookworm Breakdowns (i say that as a term of endearment haha) are the best of One Piece content on RU-vid. All the other One Piece creators strictly review Manga and anime and don't really know how to analyze a story. Since you're well versed in different authors, storytelling and character arcs. Your analysis on this series is truly refreshing. Everything else is basically fan fiction and CRAZYY misinterpretations of what they've seen/read.
Dr. Vegapunk is a Enginer through and through. If I'm wrong, I'm fine with it, but I think Engineers are those with execution but no follow through. But Lilith catching strays was so funny to me 😂
I think vegapunk learned from Stussy a better approach to cloning from Stussy. Stussy had her doubts about her own personhood when the perception was that she was simply a replication. The satellite approach is like if you scattered your personality to create a family.

Listening to this I just realised that the revolution army, if not dragon himself, might be at Elbaf. It would make sense, they saved the books with the giants, they want to see Kuma, they could give Lilith refuge - and according to rumours One Piece is in its final stages, so they gotta meet at some point. I’m probably the last to realise but it only just occurred to me
Honestly are we sure one piece anime only get to have this much character analysis? I almost think they don’t get to digest one piece and it’s characters as well as manga readers do
All of this makes me curious what the purpose of keeping Lilith means. Vegapunk wasn’t so ethical and having Lilith (the evil) in the group is likely not the best scenario. Plus we have Ragnarok coming, with an Adam and an Eve tree. Biblical types of stories are getting paralleled here and we now also have Lilith, who is often not seen as a good guy. Any time I bring this up someone says “there can’t be another traitor in the Vegapunks,” and I disagree. Maybe not in the same way, but if Lilith is motived by her desire to do something the Strawhats don’t want to do, she’s going to be selfish and make either an immoral scientific decision or do her own thing. Even in Vegapunk’s lab she was often motivated to do things the other Vegapunks disagreed with and would dissuade her from, like attacking the Strawhats and using the Seraphim to test them.
Yeah, that's interesting! Although...in the original story of Lilith, she got branded as evil because she didn't want to be submissive to Adam. That seems very similar to people like the Straw Hats being seen by the government as equally bad or worse to the pirates who actually hurt people just because they don't submit to government authority. So if that's the direction this is going, Lilith could just be fitting in with the "freedom" theme.
I also think is very important how it was Greed who killed Good. York didn't need to kill Shaka herself, she could have 1 of the Seraphim doing it, yet she did, and I feel like this says a lot about both the generals themes of the story and Vegapunk as a character
As a D&D nerd, the way you broke down Pythagoras succinctly as a hidden in plain sight weak point for 'low WIS' kinda blew my mind, and really does line up with Vegapunk in hindsight. Stella was crazy short sighted and wrote off a successful clone of Kaido's fruit, it having essentially complete access to an absolutely broken set of abilities, as a failure just because it pink.
Vegapunk’s real issue is the “issue” that science runs into. It can be corrupted by those that experience greed (York), which is self defeating (litterally being willing to kill other versions of Vegapunk), but there is also the obvious issue for the world government which Stella particularly has. Science always grasps for logical answers and that pursuit is similar to the historian seeking answers to holes in the past. It is this ambition to complete the puzzle that bumps against the WG and their desire to stifle the knowledge of the past. It was inevitable that someone such as Vegapunk, who desires all knowledge, all stories, to end up opposed to such a goal, and thereby his death.
This reminds me of a time where I (an artist and writer) was arguing against AI to my CS major friends. I insisted that them pushing for further research was causing all sorts of problems across the globe, but they insisted that it wasn’t science’s fault for how people used their research progress. I disagree, and I think One Piece does too. That panel with Vegapunk and Jimbei feels incredibly prescient in todays world of AI and social media… just a rambling thought.
Lilith, being the most pirate-like to begin with and even ending up sailing with pirates, brands her as "evil" in the eyes of the World Government, Vegapunk's employer!
Vegapunk really lived up to the hype and Egghead was an amazing arc. It did so much and answered so many things and revealed things we didn't even think about. Vegapunk giving another baton pass to the future is a great idea.
I also think each of the names of the vegapunks are very interesting. Firstly Vega is the brightest star in the Lyra constellation and the vegapunks are the brightest minds on the planet. Lyra being another name for a harp connects them to sky island. Also the constellation on Lyra is made of 5-6 main stars and there is an additional main star that is in the same region, which could be that the additional star is Stella, whose name is based on the Latin word for star, and the other 5-6 could be the satellites 5 for if one doesn't include York. Also there are two messier in the Lyra region that being 57 which I don't see and significance for and 56 which I think represents Luffy, also messier is very close to messiah, though that one is definitely a stretch. Then shaka which has two possible influences, one is King Shaka of the house of Zulu who is considered one of the most influential monarchs of Zulu, the other could be the shaka hand sign \,,,/, which many now associate with surfers but it can mean all is good. Then there are Pythagoras and Edison both named after famous mathematicians and inventors respectively. Lilith is connected to the garden of Eden so it makes sense that she would live on as Stella learned from Ohara, the tree of knowledge (of good and evil) and his head is a bitten apple or forbidden fruit. Also Lilith and Lily may be connected, though no confirmation yet. Then Atlas is based on the Greek titan that had to hold the world on their shoulders so it makes sense that she would be the final sacrifice. York is a reference to New York City which brings to mind the idea of the rat race but also the Manhattan project.
I think the personality of the satellites was also molded by how Vegapunk views each trait, he sees Lilith as evil (even thinking she could be the traitor) despite the fact that York is undoubtly the more evil one. You also have Atlas, who has a very childish version of violence, with Lilith proposing much more violent actions than anything Atlas proposes. So if someone else made clones out of their personality traits and named them after those traits they would be shaped by that person's perspective on those traits.
Vegapunk strikes me as the kind of guy who would have an awesome idea but not understand terrible implications of said idea. Like making a clone based off your greed or Wraith. A with emotional intelligence with see what a bad idea that would be, but for him not so much.

One of my favorite ideas that is looked at as part of Vegapunk's story, is the roles people play or are expected/forced to play vs. who they are at heart. It perhaps get more focus this arc than any other, though we see it explored a few places in big ways during various points in the story as well. The Satellites as you mention, though also with Cindry's forced servitude to Hogback, and her having some of her original personality it seems, and an ability to rebel. With Monet and her being willing to give her life to protect Doflamingo. And the Scabbards' internal struggles of being Oden's retainers and wanting to do right by his legacy vs. accepting that he is gone and starting to move on from the past.
I get Vegapunk a lot. He wants his experiments to being joy to people, but deep down, understanding and creating things is his passion, its his reason to be! He doesnt care about politics, money and things like that, those are headaches he has to tolerate so he can stick his head into ocean of knowledge again. Its not like Vega is a naïve fool, he would rather just not deal with it. He can justify his things with a lot of stuff, like his knowledge and creations would be greater boon to mankind in future than anything else, mother flame would just eliminate scarcity and thus wars, everyone can have as much as they want But in the end he is doing it out of pure love of knowledge, he values it over his own life. To him its such an amazing thing that he doesnt understand petty squabbles of people. He has no ambitions like wanting to be the best or conquer the world, he thinks that if he creates infinite resources, then everyone can see the same way as him, become creators He still doesnt want his stuff to be used in wrong way though, knowing that motherflame would be used to such horrific effect weighed on him heavily, knowing true history and realizing what might happen made him horrified Poor guy would've been such a blessing to the world had he been born where government was good and supportive to his cause
I’ll be honest: I haven’t watched your video yet (I plan to later today when I have time), but I think I understand why some people are disappointed with Vegapunk even though I enjoyed him a lot. People expected the “World’s Greatest Genius” to be good at everything and Vegapunk wasn’t. I don’t blame people for this because geniuses in shonen manga are often depicted as nearly unrivaled in a large number of fields. However, Oda didn’t go that route with Vegapunk. Vegapunk is probably the greatest mind in regards to technology and is likely amongst the most knowledgeable about history. However, he is not necessarily the best at anything else. He lacks wisdom and foresight at times, believes Lilith to be the traitor until proven incorrect, and had little planned to deal with the Buster Call, accepting instead that he would have to die. I think it’s okay for a genius to not be good at everything. Einstein wasn’t a poet insofar as I’m aware. Vegapunk doesn’t have to possess the greatest emotional intelligence and foresight, either.
I know it's an obvious parallel and juxtaposition but Franky's backstory and adopted philosophy of technology makes Stella Vegapunk's philosophy a lot more interesting
All Lilith wanted was Sharks with Friggin Laser Beams attached to their friggin heads - I mean, what's an evil doctor have to do around here to make it happen, hmm?? Real talk though, we need to re-examine Lilith as a Dark Type Vegapunk. Remember back when Pokémon Gen 2 released, we were given 2 new typings: Steel and Dark. Which left us wondering, is there a light or holy type to counter it? Well long story short, the Japanese intentionality of the word "Dark" was more implied for Dark Fighting type of Pokémon, or rather "Dirty Fighting". So many Dark types are ones that had to do what they could just to get away and live another day and survive. So all that being said, if we re-examine Lilith as a Dark type and not the literal meaning of "Evil Incarnate", then it makes alot more sense without re-establishing her core character or wiping her slate clean. She, as a Vegapunk is prepared by her very nature to do what she has to do to achieve the results she expects or wants. This does not mean she has evil intent. But how relatable rather is this concept to every single one of us? Makes you think.
I think Vegapunk is a cautionary tale for Frankie. I wish Frankie and Vegapunks had more screentime together in Egghead. Vegapunk and Frankie both were creators that were betrayed by their own creations because of the World Government. Both had influences good and bad.
I feel more descriptive names for Lilith and Shaka are selfish and selfless. Good and evil leave more room for ambiguity but that is the main traits I see in them.
You could also look at it as pure greed is more dangerous than pure evil for the greater good of the world. There’s definitely going to be more to come from Lilith and York

given how long it was till we got to see Dr. Vegapunk in the series I hope to see what many designs Vegapunk underwent furthermore if Vegapunk had same alter-egos right from the outset
We need to get type-moon on her radar it’s the strongest franchise in anime with their base abilities giving them immeasurable speed. & my power scaling playlist has all the proof we need, my essay playlist also proves it has the best written characters in anime especially in the girl aspect.(which some shonen struggle cough* Naruto) Like generic anime channel’s shirou vid, it’s billion$ budget & ufotable come together to give us peak animation of any year they drop or period. It’s also the lotr of anime with lore on lore & galore.
As I analyzed in a Reddit post, Vegapunk is one of the worst written characters in the series. He is not "book smart, but street dumb", he is just dumb as hell as he has proven with every plot relevant decision he made in this arc (btw, he is directly responsible for the tragic fate of Kuma and Bonney). He is also evil, as he: -Worked for MADS alongside Cesar, Judge and Queen -Stella acknowledges that the Celestial Dragons are evil (1078) yet has no problem receiving a paycheck and funding from them. He would have collaborated with the Nazis if they had allowed him to advance technology, as if technology were neutral and not shaped by external interests -Invented weapons for an organization he acknowledges as evil. He is directly responsible for genocide -Outright lies to the world about not knowing who was responsible for the Lulusia genocide, as confirmed in 1123 -Created literal child soldier clones with limited free will, again to serve the WG. Why didn't Nika, the warrior of liberation, call him out for that? What makes him better than Caesar or Judge? -Put the SHs in danger to test the Seraphim fighting capabilities and get new data -Put the lives of Sentomaru (+ emotional blackmail), Stussy, every researcher on Egghead and the Straw Hats in jeopardy for no reason, if he was convinced he had to die as claimed in 1123
I’d argue the writing for Stella was more short sighted than the character was. He showed foresight when it was convenient for the plot, and was ignorant when convenient for the plot.. that’s a writing issue.
Absolute bs. Every time he was short sighted was for a substantial reason that helped developing the characters and themes. Every flaw of him foils other characters. That’s why he is a masterful character. Every moment from him is meaningful.
One issue I have with Vegapunk is that for someone touted as the world's greatest mind, he was written like a typical One Piece character. Someone with astronomical levels of IQ shouldn't be making the blunders that he did in the narrative.
Yoooo 💪🏾 I love vegapunk taking accountability before he died. But I don’t like the idea of him not actually being dead…. This story is getting too childish with the fake out deaths

I really disagree. There was no fake-out here. It was established from pretty much the beginning of the arc that vegapunk’s real consciousness was in punk records. We were never really meant to think that he was actually fully dead

@@jamald6636 egghead is supposed to be a pretty low stakes arc. Not every arc has to be intense like a wano or dressrosa. It was an “unbelievable event” because the five elders showed up in person and vegapunk revealed the secrets of the world. Thats a pretty massive deal
