I love how it took JP like 10 videos to get how homoerotic the Smiths were -- Even after "This Charming Man" lol. Wait til he sees the "Hand in Glove" single cover. Always enjoy these reactions! (Can't wait till we get back to Tom Waits).

I think I fell in love with Morrissey on this track.

Justin, you need to get a copy of the book "Songs That Saved Your Life - The Art of The Smiths 1982-1987" by Simon Goddard. It explains the creation of every Smiths song. In this case Morrissey was explaining a working class person's most important day, the purchase of a double bed. "Getting married, regrettably is still the one big event in their lives. It's the one day when they're special," said Morrissey to NME.

Not crazy about that one. Musically it's nice and upbeat but I've always found Morrissey's voice on this track to sound almost off-key. For that reason it's my least favourite track on the album.

"...you leap straight over the fence... ....and there's a dog chasing you" Brilliant analogy 🙂

Morrissey's got a way about him with his singing and lyrics. If you get it, you really get it. Marr's riffs worm their way into your brain while Rourke's bass lines wrap it all up with a nice, fat, often funky bow. I love these guys so much and I'm grateful to have discovered them when I did.

Remember hearing The Smiths when I was 15 and I was hooked 😂 ❤ the band and Morrissey solo work. Btw great reaction 👍

‘This track just jumps straight into it… There was no pause, it just leaped straight over the fence, straight over the yard, into the sandlot, and there's a dog chasin’ ya.’ Agreed! The lyrics get there quick, too. ‘What She Said’ and ‘Nowhere Fast’ are good companions from the same album. Short, bracing songs for a dying battery.

_Meat Is Murder_ is an album to be experienced as a whole. Similar to _Dark Side Of The Moon,_ each song flows into the next.

Yes Morrissey is gay. It was illegal in England for a long time but I think legal as of the early 70s. Definitely it was legal in 1985. There was more stigma then, although it was getting better - until of course the AIDS crisis became full blown just a year or two later. It largely depended on where you lived, and personal circumstances as to the attitudes. My generation were way more accepting than my parents - but I had tons of gay friends soooo maybe I'm biased.

He simply does not want to be categorized as a “gay artist” and stereotyped in that category
@josiepkat
@josiepkat 7 месяцев назад
Which is totally understandable. It's absurd that anyone should feel compelled to state what their sexuality is. For years people kept saying why wont Jodie Foster comment on her love life. Answer - because it's her life. @@p.m.8666

This is one of the tracks where Morrissey clearly sounds off key. I still like it.

To answer you question, Morrissey has a male partner. He's gay. He still won't admit it but he's gay. When this album came out it was definitely still not acceptable to be gay in our culture.

Morrissey is gay but his lyrics for The Smiths were usually non-specific enough to allow people of any sexuality to relate to the emotional pictures he painted with his words. As a naive teen, I always assumed that he was straight because his lyrics reflected my emotions in dealing with girls I liked. Also displayed here is Marrs' pop classicism, incredible for his young age at that time.

Morrissey is not gay - he's asexual (At least that's what he has always claimed)

@irishpaul3129 It was well known that he was celibate in the early days. Whether he remained so is impossible to know!

@@irishpaul3129 With respect, I think it's a little naive to accept Morrissey's coy comments in the media about his sexuality. Some of his lyrics are pretty explicit on this matter. Ultimately, it doesn't matter to me who or what he sleeps with. Judge him by his art.

@@irishpaul3129 It's impossible to affirm his sexuality since he's always been vague about it in interviews, but from what he has talked about, his lyrics and overall personality I can confidently gather that he's at least bisexual. He might have been celibate at some point, but many of his lyrics allude to sexual experiences, so I doubt he's asexual.

According to his own words in his biography he's had a long term relationship with one male and one female and does not like labels (but yes, before that he was a self proclaimed celibate!)

Being an Underdog sympathiser, I bought the Microdisney discography rather than the Smiths. However, Vauxhall & I By Morrissey killed me. Fatima Mansions made sure.

The odd way the song is structured and the pile-up of gorgeous melodies makes this catchy one of my faves. Johnny's on fire while "A double-bed / and a stalwart lover for sure etc." always gets a chuckle: class commentary via the bedroom reminds me of Monty Python. Stephen PATRICK, innat Irish? Anyway, manages to be both pathetic and funny in a very endearing Smithsy way.
