Morrissey can pack more emotion into one line than most others manage to do in a whole song, that's why he's brilliant.

That long intro grew on me. Now I feel every hesitation and every layered note. And the rest of the song is great, too.

Favorite Smiths song, and apparently Johnny Marr’s favorite. David Bowie also covered it. By the way, the “Complete” compilation has the edit with the beginning cut out.

This is the best song the Smiths ever wrote without a doubt. Absolutely perfect, the beginning is achingly beautiful as it builds bit by bit -- then as it pauses for a split second the main part of the song kicks in with Morrisseys vocal performance unrivaled by anything else, the piano, keyboards, guitars are perfect. The drums are really impressive as is the bass as always. The song is constantly exploding with the saddest and happiest emotions. Right to be the last single, obviously should have been number 1 , but people are far too impatient to "listen" to a song properly -- as we know most people are idiots . Johnny Marr agrees Last night I Dreamt..is their best song and everyone was at their very best on the song -- all 4 Smiths. BTW it was on Miami Vice at the time in a nightclub!.

One of their best hands down. I know Marr's recounted how moved he was watching Moz record the vocal for it. Have you listened to Prefab Sprout? Their debut single, LIMOGES, is a sheer force of nature.

One thing I love about The Smiths, The Cure, Depeche Mode, New Order, is that each of their songs is complete within itself. The instruments, lyrics and mood - they made/make art.

If I'm correct, both Morrissey and Marr hav said this album is their favourite of the Smiths, and this is Johnny's favourite song. He also played this live with Alex Turner and Miles Kane of the Last Shadow Puppets. A really good homage and performance.

Marr consider this his musical masterpiece, as do I.

The distorted voices at the beginning are from the mass pickets and demos during the bitter UK miners strike. I think the so called "Battle of Orgreave" in particular.

Brutally melancholic, the way Marr’s guitar cuts in!

The version for the single release cut out the instrumental start. I think they felt it would turn off listeners on the radio. Tip to react to is Renaissance’ song ‘Northern Lights’
