"That Joke Isn't Funny Anymore" is a song by the English rock band the Smiths. It appears on the album Meat Is Murder, and was the sole track from the album to be released as a UK promotional single.
Lyrics
Park the car at the side of the road
You should know
Time's tide will smother you
And I will too
When you laugh about people who feel so
Very lonely
Their only desire is to die
Well, I'm afraid
It doesn't make me smile
I wish I could laugh
But that joke isn't funny anymore
It's too close to home
And it's too near the bone
It's too close to home
And it's too near the bone
More than you'll ever know ...
Kick them when they fall down
Kick them when they fall down
You kick them when they fall down
Kick them when they fall down
You kick them when they fall down
Kick them when they fall down
You kick them when they fall down
Kick them when they fall down
It was dark as I drove the point home
And on cold leather seats
Well, it suddenly struck me
I just might die with a smile on my
Face after all
I've seen this happen in other people's
Lives
And now it's happening in mine
I've seen this happen in other people's
Lives
And now it's happening in mine
I've seen this happen in other people's
Lives
And now it's happening in mine
I've seen this happen in other people's
Lives
And now it's happening in mine
Oh ...
I've seen this happen in other people's
Lives
Oh ...
And now it's happening in mine
Happening in mine
Happening in mine
Happening in mine
Happening in mine
I've seen this happen in other people's
Lives
Oh...
And now, now, now it's happening in mine
(I've seen this happen)
Happening in mine
Oh...now, now
I've seen this happen in other people's
Lives
Oh...
And now it's happening in mine
(Happen)
Happening in mine
Oh...
Happening in mine
Happening in mine
Happening in mine
I've seen this happen in other people's
Lives
Oh...
And now, now, now it's happening in mine
Happening in mine
Mine, mine
Happening in mine

It annoys me when people say Morrissey's lyrics are depressing and miserable, bullshit! Morrissey sings about real life. Real life is not all love , sunshine and rainbows, there's also loneliness, heartache and other strong emotions, thats why so many people can relate to his songs.

This song in particular resonates strongly in me, and there's a message for me within describing how no matter what people like to say, the joke only isn't funny when they've suffered the punchline. You simply will laugh at others struggles and sufferings until you yourself have experienced a similar tragedy, then all of a sudden it's all your own personal indignation. And don't we detest people having similar if not identical struggles to our own?
@nate2748
@nate2748 2 года назад
I concur brother. That statement about “suffering the punchline” is too true. It’s important to be careful with your words and how you joke. Everything isn’t fair game and you can really hurt the people around you. Even with close friends you only know a fraction of who they fully are. This song is a rare gem.

I lost my wife in December we spent every date listening to them everywhere we went in 86 and beyond.. sometimes it’s hard to listen to them now.. but it be worst if I didn’t have the memories of our lives together without their soundtrack… reminiscing gets emotional somedays.. but the music makes more sense to me now more then it ever did .. they gave us a gift to share forever.. and I’ll always cherish those drives and concerts we shared.. miss you CK

This song touches me every time I hear it. Was just driving and it came on my Spotify playlist and I had to play it over again. My girlfriend (one that I loved turned me onto this song and though it makes me sad because of the breakup it makes me happy because it’s a part of my life that was real and means something. This song is a bittersweet memory.

Man, this song has such a deep meaning to me. Being someone who used to be so. . . Dumb, and not knowing what it felt to be sad, until I experienced it by my own. It's actually depressing, seeing how I used to laugh with my "friends" about people with depression, not realising that I was just in the same state, how now I'm the one suffering and how bad I am. This song, this song is exactly how I need to describe this feeling, and I love it for it. The Smiths saved my life, I'll never forget them, I wish I could say thanks to them, I really wish. Truly a perfect band. :'D

Just Superb. The obvious genius of Marr with the delightful melancholy of Morrisey, however let's not overlook the sheer mastery on the bass of Andy Rourke. Its one of the finest basslines on any track. Fascinating sound to this classic.

Former Frontman Morrissey told Melody Maker in 1985 that this song was inspired by the music journalists who persistently mocked him for writing about "the unhappy side of life." Morrissey added: "When I wrote the words for that, I was just so completely tired of all the same old journalistic questions and people trying, you know, this contest of wit, trying to drag me down and prove that I was a complete fake. And I was tired of that because it just seemed that, like, even the people within popular music, even the people within the music industry, didn't have that much faith in it as an art form. And they wanted to really get rid of all these people who are trying to make some sense out of the whole thing. And I found that really distressing."

IN JULY '85 I was working summer help in a paper mill in my old home town after finishing 1st year at University. My High School girlfriend and I had an apartment near the college we'd taken the year before, and had enjoyed together as a sort of 'hillbilly embassy' and regular Friday night meet spot for our friends who'd migrated to the 'big town'. Stones, Marley, The Dead, Punk, New Wave, it all played, all the time. When my shift ended Friday at 3pm, I'd be packed and ready, whipping my 500 Honda the 150 miles home in two hours to make the party, and spend another beautiful weekend until having to leave 4am Monday. By Tuesday afternoon, a wander around the ol' downtown and dinner away from Mom and Dad was a gift I'd give myself in the midst of the wage slavery that would pay my next semesters bill. The old record store was a beauty- a genuine throwback 1960's classic- and would have the window filled with new releases and music playing and filling the street. One of those days, this was the only album in it; a dozen plus soldiers faces telling me 'Meat is Murder'. I swear time (and my heart) stopped for at least one beat. I bought it and played it and suddenly it struck me- I "just might die with a smile on my face after all". Such a thing was unheard of... An awful lot of rose colored memories are floated around about the 1980's, and some are true, but mostly it was an era of repression, fear, paranoia, shame, and a deliberate, casual cruelty. That we culturally *needed* The Smiths should inform us to the reason for their necessity. As bad as it may seem, it's better now.

Lyrics Park the car at the side of the road You should know Time's tide will smother you And I will too When you laugh about people who feel so Very lonely Their only desire is to die Well, I'm afraid It doesn't make me smile I wish I could laugh But that joke isn't funny anymore It's too close to home And it's too near the bone It's too close to home And it's too near the bone More than you'll ever know ... Kick them when they fall down Kick them when they fall down You kick them when they fall down Kick them when they fall down You kick them when they fall down Kick them when they fall down You kick them when they fall down Kick them when they fall down It was dark as I drove the point home And on cold leather seats Well, it suddenly struck me I just might die with a smile on my Face after all I've seen this happen in other people's Lives And now it's happening in mine I've seen this happen in other people's Lives And now it's happening in mine I've seen this happen in other people's Lives And now it's happening in mine I've seen this happen in other people's Lives And now it's happening in mine Oh ... I've seen this happen in other people's Lives Oh ... And now it's happening in mine Happening in mine Happening in mine Happening in mine Happening in mine I've seen this happen in other people's Lives Oh... And now, now, now it's happening in mine (I've seen this happen) Happening in mine Oh...now, now I've seen this happen in other people's Lives Oh... The initial fade-out and the replaying of the instrumental of the coda (3:40-5:00) is especially moving if one interprets the fade-out as the moment of the speaker’s death.
