Johnny Marr's multitrack guitar parts -
I remember reading an interview quote from Johnny Marr talking about how many of guitar parts he actually put down and recorded on 'this charming man'
I think he said he layered about 15 tracks down, which I was surprised by because at most I could only think of 2 or 3.
So I listened to some isolated parts of the master recording that are on the internet. he's what I can hear so I've played them and put them together to see how they sound not fully hidden in the mix.
1. The main riff
2. Riff double tracked
3. 12 string open ringing chords
4. Acoustic rhythm part
5. Acoustic doubling up with the electric on the Chorus
6. 12 string high octave parts for the chorus
7. Ringing out tremelo/rotary cabinet chord for the chorus
8. 4 harmonic notes also on the chorus.
9. A backward guitar part with loads of reverb/sustain/feedback that plays throughout but is only noticeable before the start of the verses
10. And I had to put Andy Rourkes bass part on as well, because it's so good to play
I'm missing 5 tracks but thats as close as I can get.

This is excellent…👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾. It does make you realise how brilliant and wonderful these guitar parts are from Marr…. Inspired song writing.

Ahh thank you. Going from his interview I'm shy a few more guitar tracks, possible an acoustic in a nashville tuning? But I can't hear anything else by ear. But yeah he's truly a genius live and studio wise

You had me at one guitar track. This is superb. It’s really cool that you put the effort into studying this. Your comment on why you brought in Andy’s bass made me chuckle. Again, this was really well done.

Ahhhh thanks It was alot of editing to get through to say the least, I recorded the first couple of tracks in a blaze of fresh energy at the time. I sort of didn't realise what I was getting myself in for, really made me think wow...Johnny Marr puts alot of thought into the entire eq range 😅

This is excellent. Marr also described doing something by hitting the strings with a knife ( I assume the back, non-sharp side). He didn't fully elaborate on it, but it sounded like it was a bit of randomness and dynamics.

I didn't tune to an open tuning. But I did hit a chord, let it ring out. Then put a backwards effect on it. I've got it going on throughout the song but mix it in at the end of verses and choruses I think. Can't remember now haha but yeah, wasn't willing to drop an item on my guitars from a height haha

Yeah needs a couple of guitarists live, just him back in the 80s though. Him and Morrisey both have loads of people on stage nowadays.

Nicely done! How certain are you the bass player used a capo on the recording? I've seen people play this both with and without a capo. Thanks!
@duriebrorosler4833
@duriebrorosler4833 Год назад
I've seen some live performances without a capo, they're all from the 80s. Johnny said he tuned everything up to F# I just didn't want to risk the tension on my neck. Especially the bass the tension from strings would've been super strong

@duriebrorosler4833
@duriebrorosler4833 Год назад
Ahhh I'm afraid I don't, I just figured the parts out at the time. I learn most things by ear and watching live versions for comparison. I'm sure they'll be tabs for the telecaster parts somewhere, the 12 string parts are octave notes on the chorus to my ear.

Hi, I'm Alison and I am learning to sing. I'm just asking if I can have permission to download this song you have played and use it as a backing track to my singing. I don't make any money from my videos as it all just a learning process for me. I would appreciate a reply and I would also state that you played the guitar and I would put a link to the original video, if permission is granted.

@duriebrorosler4833
@duriebrorosler4833 Год назад
I'm not sure if he did on this track, I think I read in an interview he was more prominent helping Marr out from the end of 84 onwards. Think this was 83? Who knows he well could of though. To be a fly on the wall in that studio back then
@alanstewart203

For one layer he dropped knives onto the guitar strings
@duriebrorosler4833
@duriebrorosler4833 Год назад
Yeah I read that. I overdubbed some feedback and kept it going through the track, put a backwards effect on. But wasn't willing to drop a Stanley knife from a height on my of my guitars 😂
