"There is a light..." is a classic, but this showcases the Morrissey/Marr songwriting partnership perfectly. Great riff, quirky ironic lyrics, and solid beat. That's how you do a pop song.

The Smiths had already split by the time I got into them.....but I was converted FOR LIFE! The lead singer Morrissey is a LYRICAL GENIUS - he tackles all those dark things a lot of singers won't, but he normally puts a humorous edge on it. He was the voice for the shy, the misfits, the awkward, the 'I don't belong' people in the world’ - he made them feel less alone in the world through his lyrics. He went solo shortly after the split and is still an icon, releasing new music & playing sold out gigs due to his legendary status. I have seen him over 20 times in concert and it's like a religious experience - his fans are intense! He is known for being unapologetic and refuses to play the fame game for record companies, which normally leads to him being dropped by the label - as if they think he cares! You should react to this video of him playing the Hollywood Bowl to see the amount of fans that NEED to touch him by invading the stage: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-vPij63mSH30.html They don't call him the 'MOZZIAH'' for nothing! He's a staunch animal rights activist and The Smiths album, 'Meat Is Murder' is often cited for the biggest shift to vegetarianism. I used to go around at work singing "Heaven Knows I'm Miserable Now" in my head. So very perfect for how I felt every day there. I don't have to think about that song when I'm at work now though. A much better place.

Yeah right. Nice analysis. This is about a shalliw man who just wants to go out in fine clothes. Lol. The song starts with the narrator having a ”punctured bicycle on a hillside desolate” he gets a ride in a fine car by a (really not so) charming man. This song is about classtruggle, but also the void between young - emotional and philosophical vs what appears as the meaningless of ”this charming man” way of life - thinking that ”someone so handsome should care”. As if the young and beatiful cant be miserable… The narrator seems against his will beeing envious of the charming man and the ironic nature of the song - the mocking of him emphasis this. They cant understand each other, and he definetely cant go out with him - different class; ” i havent got the sticks to wear” Btw morrisey was probably gay - but noone really cares. He spoke for a whole generation of young people often feeling depressed and out of touch with the older generation. The smiths influence is still immense for me and for many musicians. Ur analysis is so bad. U just dont get it. I liked calboys album, kendrick lamar and most grime artist from the uk. Im a middle aged white guy - but i wouldnt analyze shit i cant intellectually understand - or even the musicality of it. I like the drums u said. Omg. Johnny marr is one the greatest guitarists ever. He wrote the music first on guitar, morrisey made the lyrics to that guitar part. At least u understood how great of a singer he is - u just dont get his message…

When you're ready for more from The Smiths, check out "This Night Has Opened My Eyes" for another supersmooth bass line, "Bigmouth Strikes Again", "What Difference Does It Make", or "Still Ill" for slick driving guitar jingle-jangles, and "Please, Please, Please Let Me Get What I Want" for making two minutes feel like five in a good way.

Now this is a group where you can really pay attention to the lyrics. Most lyrics are just nonsense in service of the melodies, but Morrissey is far too clever for that. Next up "Stop Me If you think that you've heard this one before."

YES! This was a properly groundbreaking track, especially in its lyrics - nothing in the pop charts before had lines like "Punctured bicycle on a hillside desolate". On the back of this, I recommend the Scottish band Aztec Camera, whose song "Walk Out to Winter" inspired The Smiths' guitarist Johnny Marr to produce a more upbeat tune in "This Charming Man" than they usually played.

This was one of their first singles and it blew me away when it came out, never heard anything like it before. Johnny Marris a guitar genius and Andy Rourke's bass work on this track is phenomenal. Other great Smith's tracks to check out - Hand in Glove, William it was Really Nothing, The Queen is Dead, Half a Person, Heaven Knows I'm Miserable Now.

loving your reactions.! just getting re-engaged to the Smiths via youtube and the whole concept of "reaction" clips. just yesterday started also watching Wallys' Crib and like you he's seems to be checking out a lot of this music for the first time..and its a joy to behold, and i so envy you guys getting to hear this music for the first time (even though its all of 40 plus years old) and that youre still into it, cos it reminds me of when i heard it the first time back in the 80's, and feeling much the same way, surprised, impressed, and full of wonderment, at the various levels. thank you for helping bring a whole new generation to the music through this kind of format. it's fun, like watching kids unwrap presents and discovering its something they really wanted!

Subscribed...Jayvee...Its great to see a someone enthusistic about great music from the past...A lot of us remember when these songs were released...I remember sitting on a sunny beach in 1990 in Miami next to a small group of US students who were listening to the Smiths first album and thinking how weird it was that this music and subject matter had translated from humdrum cold and wet Manchester to here...I was a week into a hitch hiking tour from New York to Hollywood via San F. and and Miami and then back to NY for flight home, sleeping where we could on beaches and in parks...Beaches, deserts, cities and eating at trusty Wendys...all in 8 weeks on college break...Magical time for me...from the UK!

I saw The Smiths live in Belfast, Ireland once a long time ago - they truly were a great band and I love Morrissey’s voice as well. Soundtrack to my teenage years. Enjoyed your reaction.

Smiths fan since 1990 here. A lot of the Smiths' big songs are deep album cuts that weren't released as singles and don't have music videos. Two incredible songs that were singles and have music videos are "Ask" and "The Boy With The Thorn In His Side". A note about this video, "This Charming Man": Since the band's beginnings playing small clubs, Morrissey had a penchant for dancing around with flowers, usually gladioli, in his back pocket or in his hand. The fans caught on to this right away and started bringing him flowers, until there were just flowers everywhere. This has continued for more than 30 years into his solo career as well. Morrissey writes songs for the lonely and broken-hearted, so his fans bring him flowers and other gifts as a way of saying "thank you" for putting relatable feelings to music.

Glad you came back around to The Smiths. Their song I Know It's Over has some amazing lines. I also highly recommend The Boy With The Thorn in His Side and Frankly, Mr. Shankly. Another band around this time you should check out is The Psychedelic Furs, tforgottenbecauseRichard Butler has a unique voice that can be smooth and haunting (My Time, The Ghost In You) to raspy and mysterious, yet bright (Heartbreak Beat, Heartbeat). Heaven is also a great song by them. Heartbreak Beat has always been a favorite, but it is hard not to get lost in the voice and lyrics of such songs as My Time and Heaven.

From Manchester myself - loved the song when I 1st heard it in '83 whilst a Art College - got tickets to see them on their 1st tour of Universities - I was a an instant convert and dedicated fan - LOVE YOUR REACTION - and yeah certainly one of the more upbeat tracks - but do give "Girlfriend in a Coma" a listen - gotta be up there with the strangest song titles of all time (and a great tune), Peace!

Yeah, Morrisy has a great voice, he has many fans, but somehow underrated, also Johny Marr is a great guitar player, and also not a bad singer, Johny played with many bands, and some great solo stuff. Impossible to exaggerate the impact the British have had on music. love the Smiths

However, the Irish have also greatly contributed music and musical culture here in America.We love the Irish in the U.S.A and “ Siofra” is a lovely name.It does not surprise me that the Smiths are of Irish decent, all of their names sound like Irish names. But , here in the U.S., The Smiths are listed as “ English/ pop/ punk”…Happy New Year to you Siofra😉🇺🇸🇮🇪

@Síofra Loughlin-Bestawros That is all very interesting Siofra.We here in the States have only vague understanding of the conflicts and prejudices between the Irish the Scottish and the British. The Irish took their share of abuse here in the U.S. as well, but have thrived.But I suppose that all ethnicities have endured some sort of discrimination. It is ugly. Always has been, always will be.However, from now on, I shall refer to “The Smiths” as an Irish band and ask that you pardon my ignorance. I believe that today is “ Boxing Day”? We do not have that in America. Maybe you could offer a brief explanation?…I also have another curiosity: I assume “ Siofra” is Irish. So too is “Laughlin”( Loff-Lin?). “ Bestawros” is what I am curious about…is that also Irish? I assume that is your married name?

So great to hear this again. Reminds me of my first year at uni back in the early 80s - everyone was doing the Morrisssey dance and trying to recreate his quiff. Nearly 40 years ago now.

The Smiths have been my favorite band since the 80s. When I seen you were going to listen to this song, I wasn't sure what to expect from you reaction. I am glad you liked it. There are so many great songs from their catalog, you can't go wrong. I hope to see you listen to more of The Smiths. Some bands are just so personal to you. I'm from NW England, not too far from the Smiths but I found myself living on London pretty much alone and I'd listen to the Smiths on the underground to work everyday and cry. They reminded me of home, friends, family and all that good stuff. They didn't survive for very long but over the 4 records they released they never made a bad song (apart from maybe Golden Lights!)

I'm glad you liked this song, Jay. It captured me the first time I heard it (back in 1983) and I became a big fan of the band and saw them play live a couple of times. This is definitely one of their more upbeat songs. You might enjoy "Bigmouth strikes again" if you want to check out another Smiths song.
