Lyrics
As merry as the days were long
I was right and you were wrong
Back at the old grey school
I would win and you would lose
But you've got everything now
You've got everything now
And what a terrible mess I've made of my life
Oh, what a mess I've made of my life
No, I've never had a job
Because I've never wanted one
I've seen you smile
But I've never really heard you laugh
So who is rich and who is poor?
I cannot say...oh
You are your mother's only son
And you're a desperate one
Oh...
But I don't want a lover
I just want to be seen...oh...in the back of your car
A friendship sadly lost?
Well this is true...and yet, it's false
Oh...
But did I ever tell you, by the way?
I never did like your face
But you've got everything now
You've got everything now
And what a terrible mess I've made of my life
Oh, what a mess I've made of my life
No, I've never had a job
Because I'm too shy
I've seen you smile
But I've never really heard you laugh
So who is rich and who is poor ?
I cannot say...oh
Oh...
You are your mother's only son
And you're a desperate one
Oh...
But I don't want a lover
I just want to be tied... oh...to the back of your car
To the back of your car
To the back of your car
To the back of your car
To the back of your car
To the back of your car
Oh...

However I stopped seeing him when I was 14 due to personal reasons. And I ran into him 2 years later, I don’t know why but he didn’t say anything to me, he saw me clearly and pretended as if he didn’t recognize me. And what hurt even more was that he had a group of friends, was in a relationship, and was ready to move out of town. While i’m here miserable, isolated, and alone.

This is a humorous song where the petty bully/popular kid would win in school and the other kid was deemed a loser. So if you relate to this song and were an outcast in school, you're misinterpreting it. Morrissey is playing the role of the popular "winner" who is now losing in life as an adult. We know the story, we've seen it a thousand times before. The jock gets a miserable job and life and the nerd "loser" goes on to become a Bill Gates type or rock star. But in this song the "winner" that Morrissey is playing is childishly trying to justify why he's now a loser "but I've never seen you smile, so who is rich and who is poor, I can not say". LMAO. This is humor guys. You're not supposed to relate to this one. You're supposed to laugh at it like a play happening on a stage with both drama and comedy. Don't assume that just because Morrissey is singing, that he is singing from his own perspective in high school. He plays roles in many of his songs as different types of characters/narrators. Although this is just a generic story about any popular winner vs nerdy loser in high school, one might even say that Morrissey is the one who "has it all now" in real life and this is a jab at his high school bullies in the same way Brandon Flowers of The Killers took a jab at his high school bully with the song Andy You're a Star. And the narrator doesn't have to be a popular person, could be a fellow nerd/loser, but it's someone who was a bully/mean and is now jealous. Instead of befriending the other person in school, they passed up on the opportunity to mock them "A friendship sadly lost, well this is true and yet its false." Yes, it was lost, because it also never existed and never took place because they chose to be a bully. Some of that old bully mentality is still bubbling up "I never really liked your face." Now the tables have turned and this person is so desperate to cling to the other person "I just want to be seen in the back of your car."

Morrissey himself has said its about how he was bright in school and yet in his early twenties he could hardly hold down a job while people stupider than him were doing well and drove big cars while he wasted his life waiting in queues for buses that never seemed to come. this happens to a lot of introverted, socially stunted people - we might do well within the clearly defined rules/limits/metrics of school but without the social skills and emotional intellegence required to market ourselves we flounder in the real world. Its cools that you can't relate to this, but dont mock people who can.

As merry as the days were long I was right and you were wrong Back at the old grey school I would win and you would lose But you've got everything now You've got everything now And what a terrible mess I've made of my life Oh, what a mess I've made of my life No, I've never had a job Because I've never wanted one I've seen you smile But I've never really heard you laugh So who is rich and who is poor? I cannot say...oh You are your mother's only son And you're a desperate one Oh... But I don't want a lover I just want to be seen...oh...in the back of your car A friendship sadly lost? Well this is true...and yet, it's false Oh... But did I ever tell you, by the way? I never did like your face But you've got everything now You've got everything now And what a terrible mess I've made of my life Oh, what a mess I've made of my life No, I've never had a job Because I'm too shy I've seen you smile But I've never really heard you laugh So who is rich and who is poor ? I cannot say...oh Oh... You are your mother's only son And you're a desperate one Oh... But I don't want a lover I just want to be tied... oh...to the back of your car To the back of your car To the back of your car To the back of your car To the back of your car To the back of your car Oh...
