So many people asked if I could send them all of the knot test results that I created this free guide just for you. Download it for free and you can see all the results of all the knots I have tied and tested. Links to all the videos as well.
The Snell Knot is a popular fishing knot used to attach a fishing hook to a fishing line, particularly when using bait for bottom fishing or targeting species with a sharp downward pull. The Snell, while not the strongest knot I’ve tested, it has other attributes that make it desirable for some anglers. It's known for its effectiveness in keeping the hook in optimal position for hook sets.
This is not the only way to tie a Snell Knot. In fact, I have tested at least 3 other ways to tie a snell on this channel.

It wasn't designed to be the strongest. It was the way it makes the hook respond when a fish strikes the bait . The hook when a fish strikes curves into the fish mouth setting the hook better. The snell Knot is still very good knot for strength

What does the line pull when tied with other knots?
@Setsrfree
@Setsrfree 4 месяца назад
Unlike knots tied to the eye of the hook the snell goes through and to the shank. The force and tension on the line presses on the eye of the hook creating a small lever thus turning the hook inward and into the hook set. If tied incorrectly the snell can work in reverse and turn the hook backwards and away from the hook set.
@Smiththebat

I remember the moment my dad taught me the Uni Knot 50 years ago. I have taught it to many since, including mybown two boys. I appreciate it even more as I get older and my eyes aren't as sharp. Only once through the eye of the hook, and It can be tied totally by feel, no matter the light. If it has ever let me down, I'm sure it was my own fault!

The snell knot might not be the absolute strongest knot possible, but if i get something on the end of my line that's strong enough to break the line at the knot, it's probably a snapping turtle, or a catfish. If it's a snapper, im cutting the lone anyways, and if it's a catfish, I almost never have a landing net in my kayak, unless I'm specifically going for catfish, or pike instead of bluegills, perch, sunfish, and crappie, and if im specially fishing for pike, or catfish, I'm usually using 15 lb line, with a steel leader, and if i have a fish on the line that can break the line at the snap swivel, I'm doing something very wrong, or i have a fish large enough that it's dragging the kayak around.

Depending on the hooks you're using the snell makes for better hook up ratios. I don't know if I've heard it being used for its strength potential.
@andrewhernandez4822
@andrewhernandez4822 5 месяцев назад
I always snell my live bait hooks because of the hook up ratio more so than strength. I use a uni knot tied over the hook shank, I'm interested to see the test on that vs. the way you've tied it here.
@brooksysdead

Anything with a bent shank i tie a snell so the line is straigjt off the eye. Also i tue a snell on my straight shank flippin hooks, with the line going through the back of the eye and out the front. When you set the hook, the line launches the point upwards and really helps improve hook to landed fish ratio.

The way the line is contacting the eye is more important than knot strength in this knot. When a fish hits and pulls the hook, the hook will pull sideways and ideally set itself in the fish. 93% is not terrible, i might have to try this more often haha.
