NHL MIC'd up is INSANE! I did not think this is the way trash talk happened - especially out on the ice - this is HILARIOUS!

Adam. The fact of Hockey is that now you know why Canadians and Americans think soccer in such a negative way. Hockey and Football players are the most powerful skilled athletes in the world that play all their lives and have out of this world mentality when playing the sport. The mic'd up is not always done but usually done around a particular event such as the new years day winter classic played in a football stadium or when they are do HBO documentary behind the scenes or Hockey Night in Canada television selective games. Go to a NHL game in the playoffs and you will see a sport like you never seen before. Its unbelievably intense.

@4:40 you can hear him say “what shoulder?” He was asking this because the other player had hurt his shoulder previously in the season and was still recovering so he was making sure he didn’t grab ahold of his hurt shoulder during the fight. This is why hockey is the classiest sport in the world. He knew he needed to fight him, but he didn’t want to injure him. Class act.

There's some classic mic'd up stories. I remember one time they had Scotty Bowman who was the legendary hockey coach mic ed up. Fighting is basically a way for the players to either help police themselves from a player playing dirty, or it can be used to try and fire up your team. Not everyone is mic’d up but they will usually have one or two mic’d up most games. And yes that was an outdoor game. The NHL throws a few of them a year in football or baseball stadiums. They can be quite interesting as the weather starts to play a factor in the games.

The trash talk is an institution all to itself, generally it's a 'chirp' or 'chirping' and it starts right from the beginning. As for being mic'd up, that is also a regular occurrence, they change who get's mic'd up and the BEST moments are when people forget to warn their teammates, or when they sometimes didn't realize or forgot they themselves were mic'd up. Its an unwritten rule of hockey that fights are a way to police the game; the refs cant and often wont see half of what goes on in the game. Most of the time fights are agreed upon between the 2 participants, either from previous talk, or the subtle stuff like shaking your gloves at waist height and both dropping them on the ice. Most players will take the fight as its a pride thing in hockey, but there are some players that refuse and they get theirs in other ways. Targeted hits, slashes to the legs and around the hands, etc. In general its better to take the fight, and the main reason why fights are still allowed; it leads to less of the dangerous hits from behind, slashes, etc. Allows people to settle differences and vent frustrations where both are prepared for the encounter.
@jeremiahbaker7584
@jeremiahbaker7584 4 года назад
It's also worth noting that the reason they keep saying "you drop em" or "you gonna drop em" is because to fight both players drop their gloves and fight. If only one player drops them he gets a penalty. So by agreeing to drop the gloves and fight, if you wimp out then everyone on the ice knows you're a bitch.

Some of the funniest mic'd up moments come when the PR teams mic up a guy for practice. It's hilarious to see their teammates slowly figure out which guy it is then refuse to talk around him and skate away quickly or start making up wild stories or chirps to get picked up by the mic. Also, the next outdoor game is happening January 1st in Dallas. I can't swear to it, but I'm ~pretty~ sure snow won't be a factor in that game. And finally, you're not wrong that a lot of guys who play each other are friends or former teammates and will be friendly on the ice. I've seen funny moments where they ask about each other's family or mom or new coach as they're getting ready to take a face off. But the chirping is a huge part of the game, no lie!

Fighting plays a huge factor in hockey, it can turn the momentum around for a team, and also defuse high stress games if cheap hits or dives happen. As for the out door games a few happen each year, The Winter Classic is always most notable of the out door games, they always showcase the two most popular teams during the game. Also trash talk, it’s a skill, I play men’s hockey and even at that level there is trash talk, it gets inside the other teams heads, it’s something you need to be good at haha... I’m friends with a guy who played hockey in the ECHL (two steps below the NHL, it goes NHL, AHL, and ECHL) he has the best damn chirps I’ve ever heard haha.

The words used to describe trash-talking in hockey is "beaking" and "Chirping" It's very common. There is a type of player in the NHL called a Bruiser, and their job is the chirp people, get into fights and get under people's skin to throw off their game, plus protect the star players when they are getting beat up. To answer your questions about fights. Fights can be pre-arranged between two players since just by dropping gloves, it's an automatic 2-minute penalty, once the fight starts, it's a 5 minute major for fighting. But it also can just happen if someone does something they don't like. It is part of the sport.

Haha chirping is one of the beat parts about hockey. I loved to do it. Also yes we used to ask the other person if they wanted to fight. Sometimes we start fights to try get our crud going and get the momentum. They also have one or two players mic'ed up for the game only on certain nights

I went to high school with the guy in the orange and white at 7:22, Tom Sestito. Played lacrosse together, since he was like 12 he was trash talking. He would trash talk his own teammates in practice, he was born for it.

Hockey is fighting, fighting is hockey. I once chirped my older brother, who was playing goal for the opposing high school team. I close chirped him after I scored on him. I skated right through his crease, and said "You suck and mom knows it." 😁

Every year there are one or two "Winter Classic" games that are played out doors , on temporary rinks set up in football stadiums. And yes , team 'enforcers' challenge each other prior to fighting.

Trash talking in the ice is super common. Mic’d up or not you hear some hilarious shit. Best chirp I’ve heard at an NHL game was when McDavid was yipping Johnny Gaudreau about using a 50 flex stick that came up to his belly button. Fighting is one of my favourite hockey traditions. It can be used during a moment of emotion to fire up the team or a tool to police the game. Generally they are agreed upon and are respectful scraps

For your question at 8:55, yeah it is a thing that happens. As odd as it may sound, it's part of Canadian culture. Now all these guys aren't Canadian, but half the league is Canadian, and part of that culture permeates with other players. You don't fight someone who isn't ready for it, and who isn't a willing participant. That's frowned upon, looked upon really badly, and likely will get you kicked out of the game. It does happen, but it's rare. What's more common is two players, a shift before, or just before a faceoff saying things like "We gonna do this?" and "What shoulder you want?" or "You owe me this", "We're gonna drop 'em" or something like that, as an invitation to fight.

1. Getting mic'd up used to be a gimmick that they would advertise a lot, but there's so much swearing and trash talk that they've stopped advertising it and mainly use it for tiny segments within game when they find a sfw soundbite. There's even talk about trying to eliminate poor language within game because the arena mic's catch so much of it. Never going to happen though. 2. Trash talking is very common, but most guys are buddies off the ice. That Giroux chirp (the bird sound) was directed at a former teammate that he jokingly called a Pigeon because Giroux fed him points while teammates. The fight around the 4:30 mark had the guy asking which shoulder was his bad one so he wouldn't re-injure it. There's a very select few guys who are actually a-holes. 3. There are angry fights, obligation fights, and pump-up fights. Obligation fights are just those between two well known fighters who go for it at some point. Pump-up fights are those that happen when a guys team is getting pummeled and he wants to turn things around.
