The Social Network soundtrack broke the mold of what soundtracks should be like. That is why its going to stay as an important milestone in cinema. It's absolutely brilliant in every way.
@@huey1153 As much as I love Hans Zimmer's Inception OST I should tell you that 'Time' wasn't entirely "original" for the film. He first used "it" in The Thin Red Line (Journey to the Line) so yes, Trent and Atticus should have won.
@@TotemDaim True..zimmer uses some of his old works now and then even in interstellar he used some music from his old works..he is a great musician and i love his music but Reznor deserved it here
I don't think David is being miserable, more like his mind is just blown. In one of Trent Reznor's interviews for this score, he said that David told him not to even worry or think about Oscar season. Then Trent and Atticus did the unthinkable and won an Oscar. David looks stunned when the camera cuts to him in the audience
An unconventional Best Score winner, but the most deserving. Reznor and Ross do a fantastic job with their aesthetic-building synths, and the phenomenal atmosphere their score creates. We rarely see scores like this win, but they absolutely deserved it!
They did not deserve it. I've listened to the soundtrack twice in the past 3 days and already forgot it. HTTYD has stuck with me and most others for years. HTTYD deserved the win

He's done everything. "Pretty Hate Machine" was synthpop, "Broken" was blistering metal, "Downward Spiral" is (arguably) one of the defining records of the Industrial genre, and "Fragile" is a hugely ambitious concept album that really has to be listened to as a whole - and now he's winning Oscars for film scores that are completely unlike any of that. The man is a genius and a legend.

It's over in a millisecond and you're backstage with an Oscar in your hand." - Yup Reznor perfectly describe anxiety. Only ones with anxiety fully understand this. Million questions, million possible solutions, answers million things you must answer to yourself in only couple of seconds. Anxious overthinking.
He was very expressive when Benjamin Button was nominated may be he just saw him later on TV and thought what the hell why am I smiling so much and just decided to sit there stone faced:)
I came to see this one because a while ago I saw The Social Network for the first time ever and my God it felt so awesome to even read the name Trent Reznor in the opening credits. Great film and well deserved award
I was always in admiration that trent made a different career as he got older into an oscar winning scorer instead of one of those aging rock stars who still dresd like it's the 90s like marilyn Manson. He dresses like a grown up
Exactly. He also has matured in how he handles interviews, he's much more calm and laid back nowadays, while still being as well-spoken as he always was. He also manages his public image in a much more mature, professional and mysterious way nowadays.
Its weird that the Oscars actually recognized a good score and it actually won, thats pretty amazing to me considering its not exactly a very conventional traditional "john williams" type score. Now all they need to do is start recognizing nick cave and warren ellis and ESPECIALLY Jonny Greenwood who did the best two scores of the last 5 years for there will be blood and the master and got NOTHING.
It's called score, not just some random background music. TSN's score added an extra layer to the atmosphere of the film and it helped audiences grasp the emotion flows of the characters. Quite frankly, TSN's score was unbeatable.
The Social Network has great music score. The Social Network is the third film to be electronic based music ever to win the award since Midnight Express and Slumdog Millionaire.
I think the score for HTTYD should have won. It's such a powerful piece of music on its own. Then, when paired with the film, takes you into this wonderful world.
IMO this score remains one of the best, most innovative, most beautiful, most artistically visionary, and most GENIUS of all time. The movie deserved to win Best Picture + Best Director IMO, but Trent and Atticus without a doubt took home an award they deserved. Game changers, always. Love them

i think a lot of people underrate subtle, unassuming film scores compared to big brash compositions. I personally prefer scores like that in the social network, in fact i'm quite a fan of Reznor's recent repertoire.
@@daniel171095 This makes out like HTTYD was just loud exciting background music. Highly inaccurate. It was brilliantly composed, brought every tone, and actually contained musical storytelling.
This never gets old. :) I think Trent has found his post-NIN niche in composing for films. I can't wait to see what he keeps coming up with in the next few years
Come on, it was a fantastic year that year for musical scores. I can't remember the last time I thought all the scores nominated were this amazing. It is a terribly close call. What won it for me is the originality of it and how well it modifies the mood of this film in its own unique way. Well done and well deserved!
Reznor and Ross just nailed it that year. Their score for Social Network showed a different approach to film music and their music played a huge part in how the movie came off. Zimmer and Powell were kinda replacable if you think about it - their music was great stuff, but it wasn't music that, in terms of atmosphere, other composers wouldn't be able to deliver.
@PiCheZvara I have to respectfully disagree. For HTTYD, the atmosphere in Forbidden Friendship, Test Drive, and Romantic Flight shone more to me than Social Network. I watched Social Network first, but after watching HTTYD, I did not remember much of Social Network. That is not to put down the Social Network’s score though, but HTTYD’s music resonated more with me and the leitmotifs in the first movie carried on to the 2nd and 3rd which is one of the best examples of musical storytelling I have seen.
With a complex, incisive screenplay by Aaron Sorkin and a brilliant cast including Jesse Eisenberg, Andrew Garfield and Justin Timberlake, the Social Network bears witness to the birth of an idea that rewove the fabric of society even as it unraveled the friendship of its creators.
jesus christ...what a long, long way this man has come. I remember when i first heard the downroad spiral, the sheer despair captured in this record, i remember so much destruction and chaos associated with his music. I'm glad he survived and outlasted his own music and lifestyle.
Soundtrack played the most influential part responsible for making The Social Network what it is....for example,In the Hall of the Mountain King playing during the rowing scene...amazing...David Fincher deserved an Oscar too...
I do think it was good that the academy recognized their work. So often, music that is not mainstream pop is not recognized. I thought that was a big step forward for the academy. I was so happy to see them when they sent to have their awesome work recognized. Atticus was right when he said that Trent Reznor is a genius. Peter Murphy of Bauhaus is one of his greatest idols. In fact, they've done some work together. If you have never heard Peter Murphy's solo stuff, you don't know what you're missing. You can definitely hear the influence. Anyway, I agree, it was great that the academy recognized their work.
People will say Hans Zimmer should've won for Inception, but i disagree This score itself is a masterpiece, no disrespect to Zimmer, but the score of The social network is much more groundbreaking and chilling
Trent came a long way, i always knew he would eventually get recognized for the work he produces, the guy pretty much invented Industrial music, he always has been a true artist, one that has outlasted most artist over the years.his music always got better in different ways. hes always been original
@@Kriv-kj6lk Every Soundtrack nominee that year was better than The Social Network, I have no idea how they won. Powell definitely deserved it the most, but its ridiculous that none of the others won either.
Love Trent, he's giving us even more to love. Now we get to hear his music while we watch our movies, and more soundtracks to buy with other great music. It definitely made Social Network what it was, added exactly the right feel to it. I may be biased being a HUGE NIN fan, but I can't wait to see what else he's going to compose for. He doesn't care about anything other than giving his listeners an experience through his music, truly an artist. Anyone who's been to a concert knows.
This was probably one of the VERY rare times at the Oscars were I honestly felt that this Oscar should have been shared by both Hans Zimmer AND Reznor & Ross!
Why has the announcement of the nominees been skipped here?? The legend of India, A. R. Rahman was nominated for "127 Hours". And also Oscar for Original Song in 2009, where A. R. Rahman and Gulzar won the Academy Award has not been uploaded!! This is, at least to me, sheer discrimination and prejudice! Disgusting...
Marcus Norgren Certainly not Inception had a good soundtrack but it's so similar to every other big flamboyant Zimmer score . While the social network had a much more subtle, beautiful and unique score...
man this was hard. I thought that inception should definitely win, but then I remembered how amazing the other nominees are. so I am very happy that this won :)
Guys, Best Score isn't about what sounds best by itself or had the most complex aspects (although In Motion is some amazing work). It's about What puts the proverbial cherry on top of the movie, and the Social Network did just that. Did it deserve to win? That's a matter of opinion. And I loved the King's Speech and Inception's scores, but you can't change it now can you? Either way, Trent and Atticus did a great job and brought a great movie to life.
It's fine if that's your opinion, everyone has different taste, but I think a winning score doesn't have to be a compilation of the best songs. A score should support a film, not overshadow it, what made this score great is the fact that it just enforces the overall vibe of the movie, plus it's a very different kind of score, and it's good that the academy chose one that changed things up a bit, rather than stick to a safe one, that's the only way the art will ever evolve and stay interesting
Utterly Brilliant Soundtrack... inception was fanstastic.. but it sounds just like most other soundtracks... this definelty deserved the academy award...
Trent was "Nothing" compared to Hans zimmer. It was just that hans, to show the jury that they need to credit all the musicians working on Inception, listed all of their names on the cue sheet which forced the jury to drop the award for zimmer. He even succeded in this way.
I was just watching the Social Network last night. Their music for the movie was pretty peppy! How to Train Your Dragon had beautiful music too. Also 8 years later, I’m still sad Nichole Kidman and Hugh Jackman didn’t come back to voice Mumble’s parents in Happy Feet Two!
