This is a completely overlooked masterpiece. In it's own way, as eternal as Stairway to Heaven. You cannot find lyrics anywhere else that match the intellectual genius of Morrison, and the way the music was crafted to go through all the different stages of this song is awesome. Thanks for checking it out. I hope a lot of the younger generation will discover the crafted quality that was put into the music of the 60s and 70s.

There are bands that represent geographical regions of America and there are bands that represent subcultures of America and there are bands that represent a particular era of America. I feel most comfortable speaking of bands with which I grew up. The Doors are one of these bands; they represent, to me, the dark side of the 60s. Other bands of the era that are representative of something larger--whether it be time, place or genre--include Jimi Hendrix, Creedence Clearwater Revival, the Allman Brothers, the Grateful Dead, MC5, Iggy and the Stooges, Bruce Springsteen, early J. Geils Band, the Velvet Underground/Lou Reed. There are others, as I'm sure other posters will note their favorites. Later on, R.E.M. can be considered a representative American band. Certainly Nirvana was a game-changing band.

The Soft Parade album is a concept album about rejecting God and landing in hell. The song The Soft Parade demonstrates the rejection of salvation from the Lord, the pursuit of worldly goods and pleasure, and the realization that ungodly pursuits leads to hell, although before or at his death, he thought hell would be fun. He guessed wrong.

@@theincorruptedeye8226 "its getting harder to describe sailors to the underfed" means that as time goes on those who lack true freedom are unable to recognize a "sailor" who can be interpreted as a free spirit, the epitome of freedom. from here on the repetition and the seemingly nonsense lyrics represent corruption (animals in the yard, and crossroads were believed to be a place where people met with the devil). the last couple lines represent the cruel desire to force everything possible out of something that has almost nothing left to offer. so yeah, its an entire song criticizing the futility and corruption of modern life.

Always remember, Jim's lyrics are philosophical. He uses words like sweat and save for a shallow grave. He obviously doesn't mean sweating at hard work to provide for yourself and family is a bad thing. Why sweat and save for things, that in the end, do nothing to enrich YOUR soul. Quit trying to keep up with the Jones', in short.

For a real life example, look no further than the Amish. At a certain age [18-20 somewhere in there], kids are allowed to go out in to our world, break every sin imaginable, so they can experience it all. All so they can choose which life they want to live, the vast majority return to their Amish life. What does that tell you? Simplicity is EVERYTHING.

Pretty good decoding. Can't say I disagree with any of it. Let me do a little supplementing. "The monk bought lunch . . . Yeah he bought a little . . . This is the best part of the trip, the best part." These are drug references. Now let's look at those lines: "All our lives we sweat and save / Building for a shallow grave." What do you say to that? "Must be something else to say / somehow to defend this place: // 'Everything must be this way / Everything must be this way.'" We become resigned to the inevitability of our demise. I mean, "You cannot petition the Lord in prayer." It's irritating when people insist that petitioning the Lord in prayer will make any difference. In the meantime, we do our best to soft-parade our way on by. We find whatever "meaning" there might be through experiences of bodies and mixtures of bodies. The soft parade is none other than the celebration of soft human bodies, but the parade itself is not soft at all. "You'd better bring your guns / We're gonna have some fun . . . And when all else fails, we can whip the horse's eyes and make him sleep and cry." As for the meeting at the crossroads, that's a reference to the Oedipus story, just like the "killer awoke before dawn" passage in "The End." Oedipus, abandoned as a baby and never knowing his parents, met by chance his father at the crossroads. Of course, they didn't recognize each other. They got into a fight, and Oedipus killed his father. He later married his own mother, neither knowing they were actually mother and son. When they found out the truth of who they were, the mother/wife killed herself, and Oedipus blinded himself using the broaches that held the straps of his mother's dress together on her shoulders. So what do you think? Anything we missed? Were the women carrying babies to the river to bathe them or to throw them into the river like stones? Is it a reference to Moses, whose mother saved him by putting him in a pitched basket for the Pharaoh's daughter to find. Another story of an "abandoned" baby. Just a thought. A guess. What do you think? Liked. Subscribed. Notifications. Done. Now I'll tell you another story. When Oedipus was a young man, he encountered the dreaded sphynx. She would ask men riddles that no one could answer, and when they failed, she would kill them. She asked Oedipus, "What walks on four legs, then on two, then on three?" He answered, "A person. He crawls on all fours as a baby, he walks on two legs as an adult, and he walks with a staff when he is old." The sphynx was enraged and threw herself off a cliff. Here we see Oedipus himself abandoned as a baby, killing his father and and marrying his mother as an adult, and walking blind with a staff as an old man. I don't think the story of Oedipus and the Sphynx shows up in The Doors' songs, but it's a fun story anyway. Have fun, and good luck with the channel.

Six feet isn't "shallow." Annnnnd while I "grew up" listening to [the] The Doors - and loving their music (yet still ☺️) - Jim Morrison was a poet on drugs ... lots and LOTS of 'em, including the "hard stuff" ... he had a rather "unusual" sense of humor (and he was a bit of a cut-up (clown)), soooo I wouldn't take his lyrics too seriously. Just my opinion, BUT(T) he was [allegedly] found dead in a bath tub in France with a syringe in his arm (unlike accidentally slipping on the soap, and dying from the fall), so please keep his judgment (or lack thereof) in mind. (And the fact that, he's an entertainer whose job it is to "wax wise," and conjure whimsy.) He wrote a lot about death, and bizarre concepts, so, like horror [films, literature, etc.], it should be "taken with a grain of salt," and enjoyed liberally (IMHO).✌️😃

Take Robbie Krieger out of the band and it goes nowhere. He wrote most of their hits. Morrison was a drugged out mental case hack "poet". And before any of you "he was a genius and a poet" me, explain why such a "genius", in one of the biggest rock bands of the time had to self-publish his book of gibberish, sorry, I mean "poems". Explain how he couldn't get it published by a real publisher. Internationally famous. At the height of the band's popularity. And he can't get a book published. Apparently not a whole lot of people thought he was much of a "poet". People recognized Bob Dylan as a poet immediately. That never happened with Jimbo. Because he was a hack.
