This 2019 Remembrance Day marks the 100th Anniversary of the first national remembrance ceremonies held across the United Kingdom and throughout the world. Cities, towns and villages came together to remember those fallen and injured during the "war to end all wars".
Many rural communities throughout Scotland, like those in The Cabrach, in North-East Scotland, never recovered from the combined loss of many of their young men in the Great War and from those that either moved away or died as a result of illness or starvation and hardship caused by the subsequent harsh winters in such remote areas.
Dufftown poet Mary Symon wrote this wonderful poem in 1933 which has since been inscribed on the memorial cairn to those that made the ultimate sacrifice. The cairn, built by the Cabrach community, was unveiled by Prince Charles in 2018.
